Hello, meldonya. I'm re-reading EI1 and noted the following line: "Eärendil, on the other hand," Námo picked up the narrative, "came to us in all humility in the name of both Eldar and Edain. Turgon and the others who sent emissaries to us were more concerned for themselves and none of them were truly interested in the plight of the Mortals who were their allies, only in keeping what they had for themselves above all else. Eärendil had nothing, and he was Peredhel, having the blood of both Elves and Men, so could speak for both races." Given the fact that Glorfindel died while Eärendil was still a child and no one will speak to him of it (for good reason, apparently per what you've shared with us in EI2), why didn't Glorfindel question Námo about this? He was sitting right there havign his hair braided, so I would have thought that he would have jumped on the mention of Eärendil with both feet. Just curious to know if the Valar had blocked this little discussion from Glorfindel's ears. Eru bless! Edlyn Author Reply: Hi Edlyn. I'm sure the Valar's prohibition still held, though perhaps in this case the memory was allowed to remain so that it was still there after the prohibition was lifted. Since Námo and Irmo were speaking to Finrod, Beleg and Sador, as well as to Glorfindel, they couldn't exactly cover Glorfindel's ears whenever they mentioned Eärendil. grin They knew that any mention of Eärendil would be forgotten by Glorfindel shortly afterwards anyway, although the gist of the conversation would remain with him, since Eärendil is only mentioned at this one point in what is a rather long discourse about why there will be resentment in some quarters regardless of who won the tournament. Anyway, thanks for your question. Others probably wondered as well.

Excellent match! And Tolkien was known to change his mind about a number of subjects, after all! Wonderful conclusions to many questions here. Author Reply: The discussion the Valar have with Finrod and Glorfindel wasn't initially planned... it just sort of happened, but obviously certain subjects neede to be addressed, and so they were. Christopher Tolkien did admit later that he made a mistake in making Orodreth a brother of Finrod rather than a nephew. I decided for purposes of my own to follow that scheme instead of the one found in the Silmarillion.

Okay, long review. grin I find Beleg's shyness sweet, but I do look forward to him also finding himself again. And I don't blame him for sleeping outside! I would if I could, too. Námo and Irmo meeting Finrod and Glorfindel in the tent was a very nice touch. And I again, I want to raid their closets. smile I love your descriptions of their clothing. So few authors take the time to paint such an image of their characters, and you do it well without overdoing. Again we are shown how the Valar do not know everything, and I wonder about so many Reborn being released early and even Námo not knowing all the repercussions. The Feanturi braiding Finrod's and Glorfindel's hair was a nice touch. What I really enjoyed was this talk the Feanturi gave the competitors. It matters and yet it doesn't. Almost elvish. "Do not go to the elves..." grin --Námo gave Finrod a piercing look. "You, best beloved, left because of your love for Turgon.-- I know the Silm says that Fingolfin and Finarfin's children were close, but for some reason I see Glorfindel as being so closely tied to Turgon that this made me stop and remember that Finrod and Turgon were cousins. And I haven't forgotten you still haven't revealed Glorfindel's parentage. Will you ever? For a moment I worried the talk about Túrin might trigger some memory with Beleg or agitate him. I'm glad it didn't. And of course, you leave off with this conversation by reminding us there shall be much more to come before the REborn are truly reintegrated into Amanian society. smiles I always smile now when Eonwe shows up. Funny thing is he doesn't really do much, yet I am fascinated by him. Which is a reflection of how well you have handled his characterization. And I'm glad Námo acknowledged that the comraderie between the fighters is progress! --"I don’t share," he said, sticking his tongue out at them. "It’s all mine... whatever it is," he added with a hesitant shrug, suddenly realizing he had no idea what the archery prize was. -- LOL! Beleg is quite a the character too! The betting disturbed me and I can't help but think that will only cause further problems. These aren't the friendly bets of the Valar amongst one another. These bets have an unsettling feel to them. I really liked how you showed the spectator side of things through several eyes. It was done so that I was not wishing to get back to the fight, but genuinely interested in what was happening in the stands. Alassiel's divided loyalty was understandable. And now we begin to see Finrod really fight, eh? grin I had no doubt he would also rise to the challenge and things would become much more intense! Ingwion's thoughts during the battle and his 'conversation' with the Eldar King was enlightening and I find Ingwion who when we first met him seemed such a cut and dry character, is actually very layered and complex. Nicely done! I already told you I wasn't surprised at all about Finrod winning the first match. grin Loved Veryandur's response too! He is such a sweet elfling. Now I'm on pins and needles wanting to know the outcome of the next fight... Wonderful chapter, Fiondil! As always I want more. NiRi

Glad to see how understanding Olwë is; I’m sure he will get along with Beleg quite well. Lovely idea to have the Valar waiting for them in the tent and to help them dress and braiding their hair. They had an interesting conversation, though I have to admit it stirred up my feelings again that we’ve not seen the end of the bad guys and their schemes yet; I was waiting for something to happen since the tournament started. Alone these baddies would ensure so many more chapters, not to mention our trio itself and their friends, elflings and so on ;-) And maybe we then get more to see of Eönwë; have grown to love him during the tournament. Another lovely part was the silent exchange between Manwë and Ingwion. The latter has come a long way in these last few months, even if the Elder King is not completely satisfied yet. Ha, it was to be expected that Glorfindel would lose this fight. Now we get to see another one! :-) And I think Ingwë was happy to finally see him truly fight, and Finrod as well grin Though I have for once to agree with Lindorillë: Even if I think Glorfindel may need the victory a bit more than Finrod, I don’t want Finrod to lose the fight, either. Somehow it would be satisfying if both could win. As for the match, that was simply great! To have these two fight each other, both seasoned during the wars of Beleriand and exceptional fighters ... what a sight to behold! And we got another round! sighs dreamily Author Reply: I'm sure Olwë and Beleg will get along just fine, once the ellon gets used to the idea. grin The whole arming scene with the discussion by Irmo and Námo was something of a surprise for me, as it wasn't something I'd planned for this chapter, but the Valar had other ideas, and who am I to argue with a Vala, never mind two? LOL I have no doubt that the bad guys will show up eventually, though under what circumstances remains to be seen. Of course Glorfindel had to lose the first match. What's the fun otherwise? But as to who will win the final match and therefore the tournament remains to be seen. And I think Lindorillë expresses how we all feel about it: I too would like to see them both win.

Oh, very nice chapter even if I did strongly suspect that Finrod would win this round so that they'd have to 'play' again. :) I loved the time together in the tent with the four 'brothers' and Namo and Irmo speaking together and the two Valar serving Glorfindel and Finrod was a neat scene that I could really see in my mind. It saddens me to think that people will still be so upset with the outcome of the tournament that they have to be on their toes for the next days and months, but I know it's true. sigh It'll take a long time for things to be healed there, won't it? I loved the conversation between Ingwion and Manwe... he's certainly been learning a lot in the last few months, hasn't he? I loved Manwe's sense of humor there. I'm eagerly awaiting the next chapter! Author Reply: I'm sure many people figured Finrod would win this round just for the added excitement of having to watch these two 'play' again, plus, why make things easy for Glorfindel? He's breezed through this tournament with his hair barely out of place. LOL I'm glad you liked the arming scene with the Irmo and Námo. I actually didn't expect them to be there any more than the elves did nor did I expect that long disertation about motivations, but once the Valar started speaking, even I listened! grin Manwë's sense of humor is subtle but it's there. WOW - I just had to sit back for a few moments to catch my breath! What a great time you must have had writing this chapter. Do you have a healer nearby to help you recover??? I loved Namo and Irmo dressing the warriors. I loved Manwe's exchange with Ingwion and I loved the match. Stunning, taut and tense. Excellent - all the way around - from beginning to end. Author Reply: Hi Agape! Exciting, wasn't it? Well, you ain't seen nothin' yet! LOL Glad you enjoyed the chapter, all of it, not just the fighting, and yes I did indeed have fun writing this chapter. Healer? A nice cup of double hot chocolate was all I needed. grin

I loved Námo and Irmo’s hair-braiding “much to Finrod and Glorfindel’s embarrassment and secret delight.” So the Valar are expecting a backlash against a win by an Exilic Noldo? Hm. (And then there are all those who are losing fortunes on their bets.) “Today’s outcome will not be welcomed by all, regardless of who wins. Be aware of this in the coming days, weeks and months ... all of you." Well, if it’s only a matter of months (at most) before the problem’s solved, that’s great news! ;-) Interesting discussion of everyone’s motivations. I was expecting Finrod to win this one. As to the final outcome: Alassiel and Lindorillë, unable to decide who they hope will win, are representative of all of us. I’m not sure if I’ll be happy whoever wins, or unhappy whoever loses.... I prefer Gil-galad as Orodreth’s son, perhaps because it makes Gil-galad somewhatly Finrod’s heir. When Gil-galad appears in fanfic, he’s invariably Fingon’s son, and I always feel a little cheated. Yet I’m distinctly unenthusiastic about Gil-galad being Galadriel’s great-nephew (though I don’t quite know why: maybe it puts him more in her shadow than if he’s her cousin’s son?). The Orodreth scenario also makes Gil-galad more distantly related to Elrond (and Elros): that could be a plus or a minus. Since by far the best Gil-galad I’ve read was in Nilmandra’s “History Lessons,” I’m fond of the idea that the twins were raised by Gil-galad and Círdan. Well, even if they were more distantly related, Gil-galad was still their only (Noldor) relative other than Galadriel. But if Gil-galad wasn’t Fingon’s son, then the twins’ closest relative was (probably) Celeborn! Which seems odd, but perhaps only because Celeborn doesn’t get enough attention in fanfic at the best of times, and the uncertainty about his origins only makes it worse.... If you go with the Orodreth scenario, then Arafinwë didn’t only leave his only surviving child in Endorë, but also his great-grandson. Author Reply: I thought long and hard before I decided to go with the Orodreth son of Angrod route, but in the end I decided to accept Christopher Tolkien's admission that he screwed up with the geneology of Gil-galad, which is why I was somewhat disappointed that it wasn't corrected in the geneology page listed in the back of "Children of Húrin". Oh well.... As for who is related to whom and to what degree however you decide Orodreth's parentage (and Gil-galad's), I leave that to Hobbits to figure out. grin What backlash if any to the tournament there will be will be revealed in the second Elf, Interrupted book. This book ends with the tournament itself.

looks smug I KNEW Glorfindel would not win this round. sticks out tongue Not after Finrod spent some time training with Tulkas. grin Besides, it would be too easy to end it too quickly. You like to draw your readers along slowly. No complaints from the peanut gallery! What a wonderful chapter, mellon nín! Why am I not surprised? Hee Hee. We want all of the pretty fight scenes between those two that we can get. Has Glorfindel started to really fight yet, or is he still holding back? And what else is the purpose of this tournament? The next few chapters should be very interesting! Don't make us wait to long! Author Reply: Don't worry, Nikara. The rest of the tournament will be over with soon. I'll have the next chapter up by week's end. And yes, Glorfindel has started to really fight... he has to now that Finrod has started to fight for real, too. grin

I've been reading this for quite awhile but have decided to finally review. I am a huge fan of this story and Finrod especially. I am taking it that Finrod won this right? You have done a great job with the suspense, like with the bettors and describing the fight. I think you are way better at writing battle/duel scenes than I am. When Lindorille said that maybe Glorfindel and Finrod could both win, my guess on how you are going to end the duel is close then. Thanks for writing! Author Reply: Thanks Alquawende, I appreciate you taking the time to write a comment. I'm also glad you've been enjoying this story. Yes, Finrod has one the first round of the final round. By the rules of the list, he and Glorfindel have to fight one more round, which will be fought later that afternoon. Whichever wins that round, wins the tournament. I think Lindorillë expresses a sentiment we all must feel sometimes, wishing that everyone can win and there aren't any losers.
