What about cacao trees? Please tell me they brought cacao trees! =) How else would the people of Middle-earth be able to have chocolate? (Especially given the fact that the cacao tree is native to the Americas.) Author Reply: It's possible. I'm a bit on the fence about chocolate--not that it wouldn't be delightful. I just haven't decided whether it shows up in my version of M-e yet.

The King laughed. "He's quite right. The Númenoreans brought not only pipe-weed, but athelas and potatoes and tomatoes and maize and several other plants to Middle-earth." "Really? 'Taters too?" "Yes, indeed." Any chance that the Númenoreans might have brought turkeys, too? =) Author Reply: Could be! ;)

Well now, that IS a fine idea! How generous our Good King Elessar is! =) And there's Frodo-lad, helping him pull it along. I wonder where this Man came from... Kaylee Author Reply: Of course our Good King is good, after all! And he certainly chose a fine helper...

Frodo-lad noticed he'd said nothing of teatime. Now really, Strider should know hobbits better than that! :D I loved Frodo’s note and that he made a point of explaining that this scheme was all Strider’s idea. That Strider could sound so much like one his brothers thinking up a ploy would be alarming for him, and it’s only natural that his voice of caution should sound like his dad, much like Sam’s always sounded like the Gaffer. He’s even picked up Sam’s use of ‘proper’ I see. :) Somehow, I have a feeling they’re not going to be back in time for supper either, but we shall see. Oh, and what a good explanation for the presence of all those ‘American’ foods in ME! Numenor might not have been that far to the west, but it’s a plausible explanation all the same that they would have things there they did not have in ME, and so were able to introduce corn, tomatoes, potatoes, and most importantly pipeweed. Author Reply: *grin* You've really picked up on young Frodo--he's very much his father's son! Uh, well you know by now that you were right! JRRT was no botanist, and he used many plants that were not "native" to "the Shire" (if you posit the British Isles as being the Shire) but since he did use that explanation for both pipeweed and athelas, I think it would work for those other crops as well!

A very good explanation for 'taters' in Me- e. A most enjoyable chapter. Author Reply: Well, JRRT said that was the explanation for pipe-weed, so I figured it could also apply to other so-called "New World" plants...

Oh I love this, Dreamflower1 Frodo-lad is as practical and sensible as his father and aragorn is having far too much fun with this! He's like a child who has sneaked away from his lessons. ;-) Merry and Pippin will definitely be cross when they wake up! Merry Christmas! Author Reply: He's like a child who has sneaked away from his lessons. EXACTLY! And yes, I'll bet they will be! Hope your Christmas was a Merry one, too! Happy New Year!

The suspense is building...and it's great, lol. I really like your Frodo-lad; he's practical and thoughtful, just like his father. :-) This is going to be a wonderful adventure! Awaiting Part 3... Author Reply: I really am glad that he is coming across as taking after Sam! Part 3 is up now!

Frodo felt a touch of alarm; somehow to hear the King say "I have an idea" in the same tone of voice his own younger brothers often used just before committing some inventive bit of mischief, did not bode well. *lol* I see Frodo feels the same as I do! And I had to grin about his remark in the letter to his uncles that it was Aragorn’s idea to go off ... It’s truly nice of them to want to help this man, but somehow I am wondering if they may need all these things themselves – wood for fire, something to eat and drink, blankets ... Oh well, you can probably tell that I look forward to know more ;-) Merry Christmas to you, my dear! Author Reply: Yes, Strider's being a bit impulsive, isn't he? I don't suppose he often gets the chance anymore to be Ranger. I had a very Merry Christmas! I hope you did too!

This is getting exciting. Do we have to wait until after Christmas for more? :) Author Reply: Well, I had not planned to wait, but RL and other writing commitments got in the way. I hope you are still enjoying it!

This is so good! I love dear Frodo-lad, he is so like his papa. And I'm enjoying Strider, he's being a bit Pippinish and I find that endearing. So well done Dreamflower! Author Reply: I did want to make Frodo-lad a bit Sam-like. I've always had the impression that he really took after his father. *grin* Are you suggesting that hobbits have rubbed off on good old Strider? I think you may be right--he *is* being a bit Pippinish in this, isn't he? Which begs the question: How is *Pippin* going to react to Strider pulling this stunt?
