Shire Yule  by Dreamflower 11 Review(s)

Appledore, Appledore...Is the surname canon or has he appeared in one of your other stories? (Or maybe I'm just remembering that I read this before, a while ago, and forgot about it, lol!)

Who's knocking, I wonder?

Kaylee

Author Reply: It's a canon surname, one of the Bree-names listed in the Prancing Pony chapter.

I’m glad Mr. Appledore has found a friend in Strider and Frodo. I’m sure he wasn’t the only ‘ruffian’ who fell into the Troubles under misconceptions and then couldn’t find their way out. Thank goodness he was eventually able to get away. I wonder what Pippin will make of his story, for of course, who else would be knocking on the door? Wonder if he has a broomstick ready. ;)

Author Reply: As you know you were quite right about Pippin being at the door!

I'm sure Appledore was not alone in being caught up in something that he'd rather not have been. But being outnumbered by those who have no scruples at all would have made it very difficult to resist.

Oh, poor man! We do tend to forget that it was not only hobbit sheriffs that may have been fooled or forced into the scouring of the Shire. Brilliantly told Dreamflower.

Author Reply: Yes, I think there may have been a few Men who felt out of place taking part in the terrorizing of the Shire--I think that some of them would have been much like Tom Appledore.

A very moving chapter. I'm sure there are many around like Tom to this day.I'm glad Aragorn and FRodo found him. I'm loving this story.

Author Reply: You are right--I'm sure Tom was not the only decent Man tricked into working for the Ruffians.

Loving your story of Elassar taking Frodo-lad out for a walk in the woods, to do a good deed. Winter you never can tell what it is going to do.

Author Reply: I'm so glad that you are enjoying this story! Weather can be so unpredictable--even nowadays the weather-casters are often wrong!

That was so sad! Looks like poor old Tom is having a difficult time forgiving himself. His story sounds like something I've heard/read before...like Falco's story? All the same, wonderfully done!

Waiting for more...

Happy New Year to you!

Author Reply: You are only the second person (the other was on LJ) to spot Folco's story in this, or at least only the second to mention it. Yes, it was the incident with Folco that served as a catalyst for poor Tom to try and leave the Ruffians! But of course, he would not have known who it was.

And Happy New Yaar to you, dear!!

"Indeed," said the King. "I think it time your self-imposed exile comes to an end. You have suffered far more than a poor choice made in your youth would warrant."

Well spoken, Aragorn! I think the hardest part for this man must have been when he came to Bree and found out that his mother had died.

Now, who's at the door? Maybe some rangers?

Author Reply: I'm sure it was horrible to realize what had happened in his absence, to find his mother dead and his cousin murdered. (Rowlie Appledore was canon.)

Well, now you see who it is!

Well, we know now, don't we? And am glad he is ashamed of what he fell into in accepting the coin of Saruman and Lotho.

Now, who's at the door NOW? Hunting Hobbits? Bergil?

We will find out soon? Heh!

Author Reply: I'm sure that there were some other decent Men who were tricked in the same way into thinking they were going to earn honest money--it would have been very hard to get out of it, once one was in!

Now you know! *grin*

This is getting to be a long and intriging tale. Can't hardly wait until the next Part.

Author Reply: The next part is here now! I'm glad you are enjoying it!

Oh the poor man! He has carried his guilt for so long and I hope he can be persuaded to let it go. I'm sure good old strider will help.

Frodo-lad was so sweet and sympathetic - he is his father's son alright. I'm fascinated to see where this goes.

Author Reply: Yes, I think that "good old Strider" will be of a good deal of help to the poor fellow. It's very hard to feel guilty for something for all those years.

I do like to think of young Frodo Gamgee as much like his father. This is the first time I've written him as older than an infant, so it has been a bit of a revelation to me as well.
