I loved how you described the moment when Aragorn set eyes on Minas Tirith for the first time! I can't imagine what that moment must have meant for him, or how nervous he must have been upon the prospect of entering that city. Aragorn and Denethor are certainly not off to a good start but then, I didn't expect anything else. ;-) It's quite impossible to imagine such an ambitious and proud man as Denethor to be happy about the arrival of someone as skilled and intelligent as Aragorn. I really liked the ending of this chapter and Aragorn's realization that fighting and defeating the evil spreading from Mordor was the only thing that really mattered (I wish Denethor had been able to understand that, too!). Author Reply: Oh thank you! That is it exactly. Denethor could not put his own position to one side in that way and therein lies the difference between them. Also I'm so glad you enjoyed that first glimpse of Minas Tirith. I did hope it would be a bit special. There were drawbacks to writing Aragorn's story in one-shot chapters and one of those was condensing the time for Denethor to start being suspicious of the newcomer. I suspect he welcomed Thorongil at first but it was fun to have them get off on the wrong foot right from the outset. Thank you so much for your review.

The first look on the White City is very impressive as you describe it. But hm, not a good beginning with Denethor… Author Reply: Thank you so much, I loved writing that first glimpse of Minas Tirith. How wonderful must that have been to suddenly see something from legend that holds so much personal significance to you, suddenly appear before your eyes like that. Yes, I doubt they got off on the wrong foot quite that soon, but it was a fun way to portray it.

What strikes me as I read the chapters in sequence is Aragorn's willingness to leave his comfort zone and challenge himself again and again to accept new and greater challenges. It would be so easy to reach a position of status and privilege and to just sit back and enjoy it - legimitately, as the reward for his hard work and good leadership. But he doesn't do that. He leaves it behind, and starts again, with nothing, as nobody. Author Reply: You are so right. I'm sure this is one of the things that set him apart from his forefathers who, as far as we know, did none of these things and why, in the end, he was such a success. He really did richly deserve everything he eventually gained.

Argh, I always get behind with these. You're posting too quickly for me. ;-) I found this first encounter of Aragorn with Denethor very cleverly done. Aragorn's ambivalent feeling between assertiveness and self-doubt are very well portrayed. Author Reply: I post too quickly for myself as well! Thank you so much. Aragorn must have found it very hard just being the servant of the steward but all credit to the man for doing the good job that he did. I'm glad you liked this.

Ah--MARVELOUS! I love the thought of him sparring with Denethor and managing to best him like that. But, alas, he has bought himself a rival I doubt he wished. Author Reply: Yes, a bit far fetched maybe, but fun to play with. Of course I had to let Aragorn win. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Your description of Aragorn's first sight of Minas Tirith is breathtaking! Beautiful! I had to laugh at his introduction to Etchelion and Denethor--a bedraggled, hungry, shivering stranger (or should I say a wet puppy!) Can't he get a break? Poor Aragorn! And so the rivalry begins...on Denethor's part, anyway. Author Reply: A wet puppy LOL! Yes, he has a long way to go before he becomes top dog! I'm so glad you liked that first sight of Minas Tirith; I felt it should be a special moment for Aragorn. Many thanks for your review.

This is an outstanding chapter. I love the way you set up the rivalry between Aragorn and Denethor.A nail biting dual indeed! Author Reply: Thank you so much, Linda, I'm glad you liked the dual. I just loved the idea of those two getting off on the wrong foot from day one!

The sword sparring with a young Denethor seems symbolic of the mental sparring which will come later, as Denethor tries to puzzle out who this stranger might really be. Nicely done. Author Reply: Thank you, that's an interesting way to look at it. The next two chapters will actually be told from Denethor's POV as he tries to do just that!

As usual, your details are marvelous, and truly make each moment of this story shine. Those of worth (such as Ecthelion) see beneath Aragorn's humble exterior and speech to a gem within. Author Reply: You really know how to make my day, shirebound! I'm so glad you enjoyed this. Ecthelion was a man of wisdom and I'm sure he would indeed have recognised that 'gem' as you so beautifully put it!
