Author Reply: No, we never know exactly *what* it was, though I think that it might have once been one of Morgoth's allies, like the Balrog itself. Or maybe just some evil and dark creature unallied, like Shelob, but nevertheless drawn to the scent of Power coming from the Ring... | |

| Oh, am so glad that in this case the stone throwing is given back to its canon culprit! The Watcher has been awakened, and it feels the lure of the Ring. Now that It's out in the world It has so much scope for calling to It Its Master's creatures! Shuddering! Author Reply: Well, book trumps movie in my estimation, even though I occasionally use movie-verse elements. But I have always been interested in that scene--here's Boromir, a seasoned warrior, made tetchy and nervous by the wait outside the doors. While some of it, I'm sure, was just the idea that they were exposed in a difficult place to defend--but also, maybe, just maybe, the Ring was working on his nerves as well. And it seems clear that the Ring must have influencing the Watcher--at the very least, that hint of dark power would be a lure to any creature of the dark. | |

| Poor Frodo to bear the thing that attracts such evil - I love the way you end these so chillingly with just a word or two. Thanks for your response to my other review about Merry and the Nazgul at Bree. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Yes, it just drew it like a magnet, didn't it? Well, you have to end it with just one word, so it has to have impact! And I thought it a very interesting question. | |

| When I saw the summary for this I briefly thought of Durin's Bane, but this is considerably creepier (as in, ominous feelings instead of outright terror). I always did feel sorry for Frodo whenever his burden turned into a giant target sign for ne'er-do-well beasties. Good thing Sam's there. Author Reply: Ominous was what I was going for! We all know Frodo's rescued right away! Yes, poor Frodo! All sorts of evil things attracted to that little trinket he carried! Sam--who rescued him this time (and NOT Boromir! as an LJ commenter assumed!) | |
