Plagiarism: the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work. If you're going to lift half of a story from the books verbatim, you might consider giving credit to the original author. And he was losing himself by inches at the time. Gandalf's guidance and example; Sam's steadfast nature; Aragorn's discernment and nobility--they helped him keep the core of himself for as long as he did.
