| A lovely chapter! I love that Gimli, Sam, Merry, and Frodo are spending time together, and that Gimli enjoys being with all the hobbits. I love Pippin's sweet concern about Aragorn, and Merry moving to shield just-woken-up(!) Frodo's face from the sun. I love Sam telling Frodo he might get to carry something tomorrow, and Gimli being all serious about telling them about the mountain, but with his eyes twinkling. But uh-oh, it's probably not good that Gimli's left all his weapons back at the House. And they're looking for a cave?! On to the next chapter! Author Reply: Eeeee, a cave! This can't be good. | Hey, how do I get to join this gorgeous picnic? This is really Rivendell. Poor hobbits, not knowing that nasty wraiths are up to their trickses again. I hope Arwen measured Aragorn for his gear too, otherwise Aragorn will be getting jealous. Aragorn sometimes seems rather irritatingly self-sufficient in the book; I like the idea of him appreciating Pippin's demonstrations of affection. And the way members of the Company are developing a rapport. Would Boromir really like the library though? I never thought he was studious, but perhaps I'm being unfair - he's no uneducated hobbledehoy. Have to go and work now, curse it, but I'll be back. Author Reply: Thank you, I'm so glad you're enjoying this. Wouldn't we all love to picnic in Rivendell? It's lovely to be able to do so in our imaginations, anyway. It's fun to explore 'pre-Fellowship' interactions. They were in Rivendell for months, and had to be getting to know one another. | |

| I'm finally catching up on the chapters of this story that I've missed. :) “Someone found one of the black cloaks – the one with the slash in it where Frodo stabbed him.” Pippin sat up straighter, the pride in his cousin shining in his eyes. Oh, I loved this, just because film Frodo never got show his heroism. What I love overall is how you show the deepening connections being established among the future Fellowship. There's so much time that Tolkien has to gloss over, and I can never get enough of fics that fill in that time. Sam and Legolas bonding over flowers, Gimli spending time with the hobbits, and gosh, I never really thought about the fact that Pippin was only 11 when Bilbo left! Okay, on to the next chapter. :) Author Reply: film Frodo never got show his heroism. So true! I hated that whole Weathertop scene where Frodo dropped his sword and backed away. Why on earth did they film it like that?? I'm glad you're enjoying this. "Fellowship bonding" is one of my favorite gaps to fill. | |

| Ah, I love Gimli here! He doesn't get nearly enough "screen" time in stories with the hobbits. As usual, your hobbits are darling and I'm SO looking forward to seeing what in the world is going to happen on this wee excursion . . . Author Reply: Thanks, Lily, and ... I agree! Poor Gimli gets so little character development, especially when it comes to hobbit interactions. I like to remedy that everywhere I can. :) | |

| Quite a few "awws" coming up: Aww! Pippin! Pippin's babbling was absolutely precious. I can completely see Strider just staring on, trying to get a word in, and not being able to. Aww! Sam and Legolas share a love of gardening! I never actually really thought about that- I mean, I know Legolas likes trees and all- but never thought of flowers and the like. And- this is going to sound odd- Aww! Gimli. Yes, very odd. But how you described his fascination with rocks, and good times with the hobbits is... well, somewhat adorable. Which is definitely very odd. Author Reply: Thank you for all the awwww's. :) Strider definitely needs a good rest now, more than ever! For Legolas to relocate to Ithilien after the War, I think he must have had a great love for plants, gardens, and making things green. He and Sam would have had a lot in common. And I'm glad Gimli's character is coming through. He isn't too easy to write. | |

| Pippin's stream of chatter is adorable. I love how Gimli has has fit in with the hobbits. This is such a feel-good chapter. Author Reply: Yay, I'm glad. No matter what happens in the story, I try to ensure that hobbityness shines through whenever possible. :) | |

| I just loved Pippin's meeting with Aragorn and affectionate greeting. What a wonderful place Rivendell must be with flowers in December and not cold! Author Reply: Thanks, Linda. I like the Professor's description of Rivendell in autumn: "Each morning dawned bright and fair, and each evening followed cool and clear." | |

| Pippin looked up at the Man curiously. “Is it colder outside the valley?” “It is,” Aragorn said softly. “This is a very special place, Pippin.” A very special place indeed, protected from the influence of weather by Elf Magic, but there is an intruder waiting outside! I loved Pippin chattering on and on, oblivious to Aragorn's exhaustion, until the ranger asked about Sam. Of course Sam's at Frodo's side, where else? Stupid question ;-) So, Gimli left his mail shirt and his battle-axe in Elrond's house? That doesn't sound good. At least he still carries one or two hammers with him to defend himself, or so I hope. I'm looking forward to reading more! Author Reply: Yes, you clever girl, Gimli still does have his hammers, doesn't he? :) Thank you for your encouragement. I can't wait to write more. | |

| What a lovely day out! Strider's greeting from Pippin was adorable. Having to withstand a barrage of Pippish after such a long trek clearly pushed Strider over the edge of exhaustion. ;) I love Pippin's exasperation when Strider questioned where Sam was - the answer should be sooo obvious! Sam with his plants and Gimli with his rocks - Merry summed it up quite well. Frodo's reference to mother hen, and then *his* exasperation at not being allowed to carry anything. At least Sam is somewhat equal in this, insisting Merry carry the lighter basket. Oh, the cave! *bites nails* Author Reply: It was such fun writing that 'Pippish' conversation. Aragorn needs to know what he's getting into before volunteering to accompany the Ring-bearer south! Sam is so dear. I'm afraid he's in for a bit of a time in that cave, but I promise lots of care, comfort, and hobbityness. | |
