| A most apt analogy, and certainly worthy of Elrond of Imladris. And now Denethor has a great deal of information about Thorongil about which to wonder.... A wise King, Thengel, and far more worthy than his poor mother, and apparently his father as well. And now her jewel casket will hold her ashes--alas for it, to be reduced so in all ways. Author Reply: Thanks, Larner. When I came across the phrase I just knew I wanted to use it and who better than Elrond to speak of such? I think at this point in time Denethor is not suspicious of Thorongil/Aragorn. They are becoming friends and I think that friendship lasted for some time before Denethor's jealousy got the better of him. As for the jewel casket... at least it belonged to her and therefore fitting as the receptacle of her final remains. | |

It makes the metaphor more poignant, knowing that he has had plenty of experience over the long ages in gathering such pearls for himself and, as you say, there are more to come. | |

| Hello, Jancy here! Wow, it seems that everytime I go way you update a lot and I have to catch up. Your updates always cheer me up even if the update is a sad chapter or sad story. I liked the example (is this the right word? Or is it a metaphor? Sorry about my bad language skills) of "Pearls of Grief," it sounds poetic, sad and beautiful at the same time. | Beautiful chapter. Theoden will indeed have to be the wisest he has ever been. But I do not doubt him. He has shown his quality throughout this hideous time. I'm glad Widfara lives and will recover. As for the others, I can understand their not wanting to 'help' the enemy, but mercy must be given. Love the title and the quote. Author Reply: Thanks Agape. Thengel will have to call upon ever resource of wisdom he has to deal with the traitors. In spite of the adversity he has suffered, he has been able to remain true to himmself. I don't think I could get away with killing off Wídfara; too many readers adore him, as do I. *lol* Gilhael and Aragorn, while they have naturally sided with Thengel in this bit of anarchy, they are outsiders so they can deal with healing those who may or may not have been traitors more easily than the Rohirrim. And since Thengel has ordered that they be treated fairly, the Dúnedain have no problems making sure that they are. I'm glad you like the title and the quote. It was just serpendipity that I happen to stumble across that particular passage just when I needed it. *grin* | |

When I read that passage from the Elegies, I just knew I had to incorporate the image of the 'pearls of grief' into the story. And considering who first spoke these words to Gilhael, they are especially poignant, I think. | |

| I'm leaving for a meeting and don't have time for a thorough review, but I had to tell you that this chapter is, I think, one of the best of the last four or five you've posted. The characterization here was just perfect for each of our protagonists, and the "walk-ons" felt like real people. Great job tying up the threads of the plot too! Author Reply: Hi Rhyselle. I'm glad you think this is one of the best of the latest chapters posted. I've tried hard to make even 'walk-ons' be as three-dimensional as possible and I'm happy to know that in your estimation I've succeeded. Thanks for letting me know. I know how terribly busy you are with your work at this moment, so I really appreciate you taking the time to leave this review. And since we're coming to the end of the story there will be further tying up plot thresds in future chapters. | |

| Another wonderful chapter - and the bit with Aragorn speaking as Chieftain of the Dunedain & rightful King although unknown to the other two was lovely. I shivered when they went into the liwaeg - and am looking forward to seeing how this story continues, and how Thengel deals with teh rebels. With mercy I can see for those pretty much forced to fight, but as for the others... Author Reply: Thanks Arwen. I'm glad you liked this chapter. Neither Thengel nor Denethor know of Aragorn's true identity here so they don't realize the import of his words to Thengel. The next two chapters will cover the trials of the traitors and we will see to what extent Thengel shows mercy to them. | |
