The Findaráto Diaries  by Fiondil 10 Review(s)

Hmm. Finrod has some maturing to do still, though the bit with Amarië at dinner was priceless. I'm surprised the Maiar didn't warn Finrod's parents more about what to expect. It seems like they should have had "Reborn rearing" classes first. But then again, since everyone is different, it's probably better that they find their own solutions. I have a feeling that integrating back into life is going to be harder that it seemed. Finrod is still a mix of childish and adult, though these past couple of chapters he's seemed more like an elfling. Hopefully things smooth out for him.

I'm also really enjoying Arafinwë and Eärwen. They seem like they want to be good parents, especially Arafinwë. Eärwen seems accepting enough, and happy as well, but I feel like she is a bit aloof. To a lesser degree I get that from Arafinwë too. Perhaps it is just a father/son vs mother/son difference, but I hope they can warm up to each other soon. Amarië needs to grow up :)

I really love how you are writing this. The characters are very unique and interesting and I'm enjoying them very much. Thanks for sharing :D

Author Reply: It will take Finrod approximately a century for him to reach full maturity and he has quite some way to go yet. I'm sure Finrod's parents would've appreciated "Reborn rearing" classes but I think Námo and Irmo think it's best that they all figure it out by themselves.

Finrod's elfling-like behavior here is a defense mechanism in an uncertain situation. He's still feeling his way and his memories don't always help.

I'm glad you're enjoying Arafinwë and Eärwen. I think they are excellent parents. Eärwen probably doesn't know how to react to Finrod's own aloofness toward her. Arafinwë is willing to take his son as he is rather than as he would like him to be. Eventually, they'll work through all this initial confusion; it'll just take time.

I'm very happy that you are enjoying how I am writing this and find the characters interesting. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.

@@@ "Where are we?" he said, for it was now dark out and that surprised him, for he did not think he had slept so long. He was alone in the carriage with his atar, who still held him in his embrace.

"Come," Arafinwë said. "We’ll show you." With that, he opened the carriage door and stepped out. Finrod followed him and found, not the expected city, but an encampment of several pavilions all lit up. He gazed about in wonder. Arafinwë smiled at him. "The road to Tirion is quite long," he said, "so we will spend the night here. Are you hungry? I see supper is ready." @@@

I'm rereading some of the stories since I started Darkness and missed this the first time. This is an awful long time to remain in one position. Poor Arafinwe has been bereft of his family for a very long time.

Author Reply: Hi Tkid. I'm sure Arafinwë shifted his position once in a while during the trip. *grin* But, then again, he may have felt that any discomfort he was experiencing was worth it to have his firstborn sleeping beside him once again.

Thanks for taking te time to re-read some of my earlier stories and leave a comment or two along the way. I appreciate it very much.

Re reading this and thinking that Finrod is just like a six year old in an adult body. Arafinwe and Earwen need to realise this and remember how they coped with Finrod when he was 6! Somebody, maybe Namo, needs to take Amarie aside and explain the facts of life to her, no, not those facts of life, just that Finrod is still very new to life and will act out just like a very young child. Yes, I know Namo does have a talk with her but not for close on another 100 years or more, she needs one now!
Still think the Reborn should come with a book explaining their care and feeding, maybe Earwen should write one!
Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: Hi, Lynda. Well, unfortunately, I'd already written the relevant parts of Elf, Interrupted, so I couldn't change things. I suspect the Valar were hoping Amarië would come around on her own but when she didn't, they took over her... er... education. *grin*

I'm sure some kind of book was written by someone or at least notes were taken and passed along to the next harried Elf having to deal with a recently released Reborn. *grin*

Glad you are enjoying this the second (or third or fourth?) time around. It's always nice to see new reviews of older stories and know people are still enjoying them. Thanks for taking the time to let me know. I appreciate it.

Well, I feel like I'm finally back from Mandos. So good to be reading this again. It's fun to read something that is now complete. I don't have to sit and bite my nails anymore!

"And now we get to see if we got it right all over again."

Well - IMHO - they did a fine job. As did you in writing his story and this chapter... Oh - and his betrothed is a pip, isn't she! *giggles*

Author Reply: Hi Agape. I'm glad you are finally able to finish reading this story. It is nice when a story is complete and you can just read one chapter after another, isn't it? *grin* Anyway, I think Finrod's parents did a fine job, too, and yes, his betrothed is a pip. *grin*

Thanks for reading and letting me know how much you enjoyed this chapter (and story). I appreciate it.

Arafinwe is handling his reaquantance with his son just as he should, I get the feeling that he is a very good horseman and he is working with Finrod much as he would a skittish horse, being firm and gentle in turn.
I am beginng to wonder if maybe Amarie was more in love with the heir to the Noldoran then with Finderato. I am with a lot of your reviewers who jsut want to give her such a slap, of course he does not have court clothes, what would he need them for in Lorien!
More please,
Lynda

Author Reply: I think you are correct about Arafinwe. I hadn't thought about it in just that way. And being an Elf, of course he's a very good horseman. *lol*

As for Amarie... I think orignally she was in love with Finrod but as the centuries of their separation continued, she substituted the love for him for the love of the image of him, if that makes any sense. Naturally her image of him does not coincide with who he is now and there lies her dilemma.

Arafinwë is doing a great job with Finrod, I have to say. Considering the situation they are thrown in, he manages admirably. Amarië, however ... oh well, let's just say I'll certainly *not* nominate her for the Nobel Prize for tactfulness ... Now I am beginning to understand why it took so long for Finrod to fall in love with her again, if these first days are anything to go by.

Author Reply: Arafinwe is pretty cool here, isn´t he? It´s why he´s one of my all time favorites. And now you can see why Finrod and Amarie´s relationship took awhile to get on an even keel. She only gets worse before she gets better.

No, Amarië. This is not the Findaráto you once knew and loved. This reborn ellon – who throws food at you, and behaves generally like an elfling – is an ellon who, among other things, survived the Helcaraxë, survived battles with Melkor’s minions, and founded a mighty kingdom. And who gave up his crown to fulfil an oath, and as a consequence died in agony to protect a mere Mortal.
Who this stranger is, is someone you will have to learn to know. But you are not alone! Arafinwë and Eärwen – and Findaráto himself – are learning right along with you!!

Author Reply: Amen to that!

I'm about ready to slap Amarie for Finrod. poor guy! I love the way Arafinwe is handling everything, so patientlya nd so lovingly. He and Earwen are so laid back and comapssionate about everything with their confused son. Enjoying this story immensely!

Author Reply: Hi Ellie. I am glad you are still enjoying this story. Thanks for letting me know. I really appreciate it.

Hi Fiondil,

What a beautiful picture you give us in the middle of this chapter: Arafinwë and Finrod sitting together gazing at the stars. I love it when Finrod says, "Would you like me to tell you their names?" I've said it before, but Finrod is really lucky to have Arafinwë as his atar.

And it's very telling, I think, what Finrod says about the stars. "They never disappointed and they never judged."

I really felt for Finrod during Amarie's comments about his clothing. And I like what Arafinwë said about the difference between hating and not liking someone.

Thanks Fiondil!

Joanne

Author Reply: Hi Joanne. I love that scene as well. Finrod is trying to make some kind of connection with this stranger who is his atar and luckily Arafinwe does not reject his offer or ridicule him, recognizing that his son is very much the elfling here. The stars, of course, were Finrod´s first "friends" and so he tends to compare others by the "standards" of his friendship with the stars. A juvenile attitude, but one that is very real even among us humans at times.

This must be wonderful and but a step beyond unendurable at the same time! Poor folk--trying desperately to understand!

Author Reply: Indeed it must be, Larner, for both Finrod and his parents. And, of course, with every family welcoming back a Reborn
