Elf, Interrupted: Book Two: Glorfindel's Quest  by Fiondil 12 Review(s)
EärillëReviewed Chapter: 68 on 2/20/2010
Ah. I did not think that far - that Edrahil pushed Finrod down to cover him, but then rushed off. Hmm. Intriguing. (*groan* And this practically nails me in on this story until I get the answer...)

It was a mess, yes, and now it seems that everything else is messed up because of it too... Typical. *roll eyes* I hope Edrahil recovered soon, though. And yes, where were the Valar? They popped up at inopportune moments but now none of them were there... I thought that Edrahil would not suffer from that, because he was neither released too early like Glorfindel or in the city-wide accident in Vinyamar. I forgot that Ingwion was in the rescue mission to bring Finrod and Glorfindel back also, so I kept wondering how he was in on this telepathic thing until it was explained. The end of the two point of views - Belegs' and Ingwion's - looked redundant, especially considering how they were put side by side like that, but I am aware of their importance. (Huh. A rather useless statement, eh? LOL But I was indeed torn about it.)

Might I borrow the blood-trance? I do not know if I will use it soon or what... but I figured that it would be better to ask in advance than otherwise.

Eredhel... Lone Elf? And what about the knowing looks? Was it because he was under the Feanorians, thus dubbed a Kinslaying (or perhaps he was one himself) and shunned by other Elves?

Edrahil's episode was quite scary. I would imagine it was more scary for others there... Why was there no one to pick up the knife thrown away from his hand, though? And I lost track of in whose hand his sowrd was currently kept. LOL Trust me to pick things like that... Sorry. I cannot help it. :embarrassed:

Oh well. I have fallen into the water. Might just as well swim. So... another nitpick... A comma in one of the two warrior-braided ellyn's comment about orc-brained idiot (LOL Oxymoron.) should be a period. It was just before the dialogue...

Again, sorry for that. I did enjoy this chapter, though, in a way. The part about the main mess hooked me up and kept me tied in, and now I really wish to find out how Edrahil's fate would be. (I really hope he would be well soon, for the sake of all people there.)

- Rey

Author Reply: The reason for the slippage is unclear even to the Valar. It is a puzzle to them and to everyone else. Obviously, Edrahil suffered a grave shock when he must have realized whom he had attacked and probably just wanted to run away and hide and so he did, or at least his fëa did. We'll see what happens to Edrahil in the next chapter.

Thanks for the comma alert. I've made the correction. Not sure how I or my beta missed it earlier.

Edrahil tried to kill Finrod, yet the first thing Finrod did upon being freed was to ask how Edrahil was doing. That is the sign of a true leader.

Author Reply: Oops! I can't believe I didn't answer this before, Tari. Forgive me. I only realized I hadn't because someone happened to be reviewing this chapter at this time and I saw I hadn't responded to your review.

You are indeed correct that Finrod is a true leader, more concerned for others than for himself. That's why he's my favorite (or one of my favorite) Elf of all.

Such a sad chapter. I do so hate it when the 'scars' from their life in Beleriand rear up and assail these dear Reborn...

Very nicely written chapter - but extremely sad.

Author Reply: Sad, perhaps, Agape, but I am glad you liked it nonetheless.

Huh...Edrahil nearly killing his chosen king, for whom he gave once his own life, in a not so pleasant manner, to say the least, it's a bit rough, even from my point of view. A lot of action in this chapter, Fiondil, and I'm thinking this may be the "prologue" for further moments of action and adventures on Tol Eressea, perhaps. They ought to catch the real troublemakers, after all.

“Which one of you orc-brained idiots let him loose?” Well, you know what they say about the things coming out of a child's mouth..."lol" But I have no doubt that the wise Lord of Lorien had already foreseen any events of this sort when he decided to send Edrahil along with the others.

I can't wait to read your next installment and find out just why wanted Arafinwe to take with them these two Noldor warriors as well.

Author Reply: Hi Rey. Yes, I suppose Irmo did forsee something like this happening but felt it necessary for Edrahil to go with everyone else. There is always a madness to the Valar´s methods. *lol*

Poor Edrahil, not a good day for him or Finrod! I am with Glorfindel, there is never a Maia or Vala around when you need one or there just does not appear to be one around! I would be very surprised to find that Irmo has let either of his charges out with out a keeper, I think he will step in when he is needed, he is just waiting to see how well they handle things by them selves!
More please,
Lynda

Author Reply: Not a good day for anyone, that is for sure. You are probably correct about Irmo waiting to see how well the elves handle this situation. Thanks for your comments, Lynda. They are always appreciated.

When I first read this chapter I thought to myself, "Is that all that happens?" *lol* But then I read it again and and it got me thinking about a few things.

Glorfindel at first seems remarkably inactive despite his training with the Maiar. Or was he simply bent on guarding Finrod at all costs? I had to laugh at Finrod's question: “And you’re standing here, why?” because it echoed the question in my head. He does go into action later, but I wonder if he isn't a little disconnected somehow from what's going on, at least until Finrod is attacked. Just my impression-maybe I'm expecting too much from Glorfindel.

Others have iterated the same questions I have about the link between Ingwion, Beleg and Finrod and how Glorfindel fits into that. I can understand Finrod and Beleg having a special link because of their particular experience during the hunt, but wonder how the others fit in.

Lastly, I'm curious about the significance of the name Eredhel. Is the reaction to the name merely because it seems an odd name for any elf or does it have some special significance? I know what the name means, but find everyone's reaction intriguing, which I figure is the response you want from your readers. But maybe I'm reading too much into this.

Thanks Fiondil. As always can't wait for the next chapter!

Joanne

Author Reply: Glorfindel may be a bit disconnected or maybe he has learned a few things along the way, such as not to leap into every situation. As for the significance to Eredhel´s name, we may see a hint for it in the next chapter though it will not be blatant.

No, this is definitely not Edrahil’s day. He _did_ have trouble with the crowds from the beginning, and Finrod and Laurendil _did_ try to soothe him. But that “rush hour crowd” in the marketplace coupled with a loud crashing noise was evidently just too much for him, and he went running off in a panic. Then he threatens that poor butcher.
After which he falls prey to the blood-trance – and the one he attacks is _his king_!! (Makes me wonder if he might not right now be banging on the gates of Mandos, demanding to be let in. If so, I am sure Námo is Not Amused.)

The names of Eredhel and Dúnamdir hints at interesting stories. Perhaps they may be told some time?

I wonder what the reaction of the orc-brained idiot who let Edrahil out of Lórien will react to Dúnamdir’s opinion of him? ;-)

The connections between Finrod and Beleg and Finrod and Ingwion were an interesting surprise. That the links are a result of the Hunt is a reasonable conclusion. Do these links extend only between Finrod and Glorfindel and the Hunters, or are the Hunters linked in a similar manner?

Author Reply: No, definitely not Edrahil´s day at all! We will learn in the next chapter what happened to him and how he is "retrieved". I do not know if Eredehel´s and Dúnamdir´s stories will ever be told but you never know. As for the link between the Hunters, I am not sure. We will have to wait and see. *sly wink*

Oh no! The blood trance again...and I expect Glorfi's a bit smug, HE didn't slip his leash this time! But Edrahil...Where's the Feanturi when we need them? Come back Edrahil! *looks for him* He's not dead Atar Fiondil, please...don't let him be dead again! I think Lord Namo might not like it!

Waiting anxiously for the next installment, which will hopefully be here by the time I get back from England (on the 10th or 11th) but no pressure!!

Tye-melin,

Kaylee!

Author Reply: Going to England! Cool! One of my favorite places. Anyway, the answers to your questions will be revealed in the next chapter which will be posted by the time you get back from your trip.

Ah! More stories to learn, and a panicked Reborn to seek, find, and retrieve! It's been a busy day!

Author Reply: A very busy day and it isn´t even over with yet! *lol*

The last several chapters (since my last review) have all been wonderful, including this one. So are "Hope of the West" and "Lone Elf" (if I'm reading Hisweloke correctly) joining the party permanently or just for the time being? (I know, wait for the next chapter!). I do hope Finrod finds himself or Laurendil able to bring Edrahil back - or will that be Glorfindel's job, seeing as how he knows from personal experience exactly what's happened to Edrahil, if it is indeed a leash-slipping.
I was wondering if you are going to be more specific about what kinds of hybrids Finrod bought for his mother - annuals or perennials, scented, larger blossoms, re-blooming, etc? Not that I'm a gardener ...
Keep writing & here's hoping your internet problems soon will be over.

Author Reply: Yes, the translations are more or less correct, Rick. They will not be joining the group permanently but they will play an important if brief role in the story. We will see next chapter how it all turns out with Edrahil. As for the flowers... I am no gardener either so that is why my descriptions are vague. I leave it up to the reader to decide what kind of hybrids Finrod bought for his mother.
