Hello!

I am going through your fics again and enjoying it just as much as the first time. :-) I read this one and wondered if Elros every met any of his relations that might have come from Valinor? ;)

Thanks for your work,

MP

P.S. Will there be another story for Maglor??? I am dying to know how his meeting with his family goes!

Author Reply: Hi MP. I'm glad you're enjoying my stories the second time around. I have no idea if Elros ever met any of his Valinórean relations, though I'm sure he met the elves who came to the island during his life time. And I can't promise another Maglor story at this time, but it's not outside the realm of possibility, so you never know. Thanks for leaving a review. I appreciate it very much.

Fiondil,

I greatly enjoyed this story about Elrond receiving a letter from his brother, and the relationships between Elrond and Cirdan, Erestor, and Gil-galad. I think it might have been what inspired me to start writing more about Elrond's background in the stories I am writing about Faramir (which seems a little odd I imagine, but I see Aragorn as becoming Faramir's mentor, and Elrond was Aragorn's, so who Elrond was matters for my purposes).

There really isn't a lot out there in terms of information on the twins' early lives - I am planning to write that they fought in the War of Wrath (near the end of the War), and that they lived with Cirdan after leaving Maglor's care sometime before that. I'm probably going to put Elros with the Edain after they make the choice, but I'm planning to have Elrond remain frequently in his brother's company until Elros sails. I like the way you've written it and I completely understand why Elrond might not understand Elros' choice, and would resent it, but I think he would want to enjoy all the time he has. I'm writing that after Elros sailed, Elrond's close friends (Gil-galad, specifically- I'm writing from his perspective) notice a change in Elrond, that after Elros sails, Elrond becomes more like his brother in some ways, as if in homage to his twin.

Anyway, thanks again!

Susana

Author Reply: Hello, Susana. I'm glad you enjoyed this story and that it has inspired you to write your own stories about Elrond. Thanks for letting me know. I really appreciate it and good luck with your writing.

Oh my. What a bittersweet story... But I am glad Elrond at least had something of his brother, however inadequate it felt and however late it was.

I thought you would include the meeting between Elrond and the Númenorian captain, though. :rueful: I was looking forward to it. But I admit, the ending was good already. I never knew that you should spread sand on a piece of paper to dry ink too. Interesting. Would it not affect the writing somehow, though?

By the way, I am interested to see the background to the friendship between Elrond and Erestor. Do you have it somewhere? If not, will you write about it some time? Would you?

Seeing Elrond in this younger frame of his was quite refreshing. I enjoyed it very much, although I was firstly taken aback. (My own fault, as my mind was yet set on his much-older image during the Ring War.) I was a bit confused with the reference to sprained (I think?) ankle and sleeping on a wet deck, though. Would you please explain it to me?

Elrond's shy smile was... amusing, somehow. And Círdan's calling him "Elfling" was both surprising and hilarious. (I laughed whenever it was brought up.) - Ha! Lord Elfling...

Hopefully I can put a review for it on the MEFAwards. It certainly deserves it! *grin* And perhaps it might be longer than this... But firstly I must learn more about reviewing there. :)

- Rey

Author Reply: Hi Rey. Yes, it is bittersweet but most final partings are. There is a special kind of sand that was used in earlier times that was spread over a written document (when they used real ink) to dry it before rolling it up.

Elrond was treating a young elleth with a sprained ankle that she got when she was being careless aboard a ship where the deck was wet. Lindon is, after all, on the Gulf of Lune and therefore it would have a harbor with ships.

If you're not sure about how to review at MEFA there is a FAQ about it on the site or you can ask me and I can walk you through the procedure.

Glad you enjoyed this story, Rey. Thanks for reviewing.

*sniff* That was so sad and left me in tears. As glad as I am that Elros wrote this letter, it was hard to read, and it must have been even harder for Elrond. Luckily he was not alone and had his friends with him.

Author Reply: This is what you might call a three-hanky story *grin*. And as you say, as hard as if was for Elrond, at least he had friends to offer him their love and support during this difficult time and I'm sure he appreciated it very much, because I think, until that momment, the knowledge that his brother would eventually die and leave the Circles of Arda was only an abstraction. Now, however, the reality has hit home and it must have been doubly hard for him to come to terms with Elros' death, more so than it would be for any Mortal.

Sorry that I didn´t review for so long, I was occupied with preparations for a dig that is about to begin in September (I´ll work there as draftswoman).

I always wondered if Elrond would have ´felt´ his twin passing away, but that would have been too horrible an experience...
Poor Elrond... anyone who has read the Silmarillion and the Lord of the Rings knows that he will eventually loose Gilgalad too, and later his wife and daughter, but he will see the former two again in Valinor and I´m pretty sure that he will someday see his daughter again. There is always hope!
Though it´s sometimes hard to hold on to.

I´m already looking forward to the next stories!
Greetings, Thalanee

Author Reply: Yes, there is always hope even for us Mortals. Good luck on the dig. I am envious. *grin*

Oh, my. The last letter from his brother, who has now been dead for more than a century. Elrond has been left behind – again! And this time it was his twin who left him.
I don’t know just how close you envisage the brothers to have been, and the effect their different choices would have had on Elrond. From the small glimpses you have presented, Elros seems to have weathered this without much of a problem. Yet I suppose that they would have been psychologically quite different, resulting in different choices when they decided to which kindred they would be counted – and Elrond, being an Elf, might have found this harder – as well as the eventual inevitable death of his brother.
And since they evidently didn’t part on the best of terms, the pain of his brother’s death would have struck even harder than it would otherwise have. In such circumstances there is no pain greater that that connected to the “should haves” and “could haves”.

Glorfy is already back in Middle-Earth??? EI takes place around the time Elros died, which means that he has had scarcely more than a century to “grow up” again, return to Middle-Earth, and establish himself in Gil-Galad’s court! For an Elf, that must have meant he had to have been in a tearing hurry to go back to the joys of orc-hunting and similar warriorly stuff.
And just how _did_ he get back anyhow? Did the Valar charter one of the Teleri’s ships for the voyage? (I suppose they could have done that – and as for the rest, I know! Wait for the story in EI to get that far!)

Author Reply: Hi Sunny. This story has no relation to EI. I wrote it for the Silmarillion Writers´ Guild´s Akallabeth in August Project. I probably should not have had Glorfindel in it. Perhaps I should go back and revise the story so that Erestor reads the letter instead. I guess I was not really thinking about it too clearly. What´s your opinion?

Your analysis of Elrond and Elros is very much how I imagined them for this story.

Hi Fiondil,

As far as I'm concerned, this story is just about perfect. I like the way you intertwine the stories of Elros writing the letter and Elrond receiving it.

And I guess I'm not one that would necessarily expect Elrond to know when Elros died. Twins they might be, but they are separated by more than just distance. I don't think--at least I can't think of any instances right now--that Tolkien gave us much of an idea about how close any mental link would have been between the two, although we do have incredible stories from modern times about just that--the link between twins. But much happened, I expect, after Elros made his choice to be counted with the Edain. I don't think anyone would have been able to predict just how long Elros would live as there wasn't much of a track record to go by.

So Glorfindel gets to read the letter to Elrond...nice to see them together, even if under such sad circumstances.

A bittersweet tale, yes, but quite well done.

Thanks Fiondil!

Joanne

Author Reply: Hi Joanne. Your analysis is very close to how I envisioned things between the two brothers when I wrote this. I thought the interweaving makes the story more dramatic rather than just having Elrond read the letter. I am glad you enjoyed this. Thanks for reading and reviewing.

That was a bittersweet shot. :_)

Hmm, with them being twins, you would expect for Elrond to at least felt something the day his brother died. o-o

Aw, poor Elrond. Someone give him another hug! ;_)

Great job, enjoyed reading it!

Hope RL is going great!

Author Reply: You will have to read my response to Larner´s review for your answer about Elrond sensing his brother´s death. Glad you liked this, MP. I appreciate you leting me know. RL is going so-so but cannot really complain. *grin*

LarnerReviewed Chapter: 6 on 8/10/2009
A blessing unto the world of Arda was Elros Tar-Minyatur! And a blessing this was to Elrond, although I have always imagined him knowing of the loss when it happened, either having come to Númenor himself at one point upon one of Círdan's ships, or through the special bond so many twins, even fraternal ones, share.

And I, too, have felt that in part it was Elros's insatiable curiosity to see what lay beyond the next turing of the road that lead him to choose as he did.

Thanks for this one!

Author Reply: Perhaps he might have felt something at Elros´ passing, but then there would not have much of a story, at least for me. I decided that such was not the case. Perhaps because Elrond had shut that part of him away, not able to face the pain the separation cost him. Anway, I am glad you enjoyed this story, Larner. Thanks for letting me know.

Oh, this ties in very nicely with the previous tale. The beginning and the end.
You do feel so very sorry for Elrond, how he did not end up in a padded room somewhere speaks a lot for his charecter and the people he had round him, Atar must have loved him so very much!
More please,
Lynda

Author Reply: Yes, these two stories do tie in with one another nicely, although this story came first and the Eonwe story followed. I think you are correct about Elrond. It does speak much for his character and it is why I think he is so loved among Tolkien fans.
