I'm listening to the BBC Radio adaptation for I think the 25th time - I'm beginning to lose track! - and I love the care that Aragorn shows to the hobbits. I have wondered too what he thinks of doing all of this, but obviously they are dear to each other. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Yes, he clearly is already beginning to be fond of them-- even if perhaps, a bit exasperated.

"What impulse moved my heart? " *waves hand frantically and clicks fingers* I know, Miss, I know! 'twas the irresistible charme of hobbits! Author Reply: *grin* Yes, that infamous Fallohide charm...

This was well done because it got me thinking about the implications of a line I'd only taken idly--which is something not to be done in Tolkien, especially when writing of a world that does not take oaths lightly! Very, very appropriate. Author Reply: I think it was about two re-readings back that it suddenly struck me: those were not casual words, or if they were they still were *meant*, and that they were nothing less than an oath of fealty to Frodo himself. I reminded me of when Faramir lightly says he wouldn't touch Isildur's Bane whatever it was, even if it lay by the side of the road. Yet on finding out later, he still takes that casual statement as seriously as any oath sworn. And I think that here, Aragorn is the same. He didn't use the words "I swear" because he did not have to. His word *was* his oath.

Only the greatest recognize spontaneously when it is time to swear fealty toward others, and Aragorn, after all, is among the greatest! Lovely! Author Reply: Yes, he is. I am sure that he was moved by his great heart to see the true worth underneath Frodo's seemingly careless actions. But now he is thinking about it, and does not quite understand-- still, he is confident enough in who he is that he does not regret the decision, whether he understands or not.
