what a relief for our elves to use their real names, even if no one will recognize it. A black Galadriel and a stuttering Finrod - what a wonderful idea. Thank you so much for another really entertaining chapter. Lai Author Reply: Yes, it must be a relief to be able to use their proper names even if no one else realizes it. Atto, Pine Cone isn't an elvish name, but Thoneredh isn't a bad one...maybe a nickname for an ellon whose adar is named something to do with a pine tree. grin Anyway, I really loved the idea of the Sindarin name lottery and how it all came out. That's amazing. I would do it for a party, too but I can't come up with enough good Sindarin names on my own (or Quenya ones, either)! Seems like they kept the snow-theme for some of the names, though. I like that...now, I wonder what Fingolfin, Arwen, et al, would think of their Mortal counterparts? And I remember Zach is Finrod! That makes me think it's even better that Daeron took him under his wing...Daeron, like Finrod, was quite good with the harp, isn't that right? =) Tye-melin, Kaylee Author Reply: Hi Kaylee. When I was researching the Finnish Elf Academy for this story, one of the people interviewed in the article I read gave his 'nom d'Elf' as "Pine Cone". grin I couldn't resist and that's how this chapter came about. And actually, the name lottery included both Sindarin and Quenya names, though it's not obvious from the chapter itself. I'm sure Glorfindel supplied a lot of those names to the list. grin And who knows what the real owners of the names would think. Some would probably find it amusing while others would not. Anyeay, you're right that Finrod was known for his harping. Thanks for re-reading and re-reviewing. I appreciate it.

Haha! Oh my. The Elves took control of the student population again... It was not a lesson this time, true, but it was just as... grand. :) I wonder what the teaching board - all the people in charge - thought about this constant invasion... Wow. LOL But it was fun! And amusing, to say the least. Hah! A black-and-tiny Galadriel! And Zaque was Finrod! (Hmm. I wonder if Finrod and others would not be offended... Heheheheh. The Valar were probably tickled pink by then. I was! (And nearly choked on the potato fries several times. grumble If you had warned that this chapter would be more funny than the others, I would have restrained from eating... Good that I was not drinking.)) But hey, Pine Cone is actually a rather nice name... Picky Daeron. sniff I would not have been caught dead with Sugar Plum on my name tag, though. grin Come to think of it again, I love Snowflake... :) I was surprised that Rolland (Uh. I think I misnamed him in last review... :embarrassed:) allowed names of film characters/actors to be picked by the students... It kind of did not make sense. The actual event of name-picking was truly great, however. All the waiting was paid off! - Rey Author Reply: Hi Rey. I happened to be re-reading this story and saw that I never answered your review of this chapter. Not sure why since I answered all your other reviews. shakes head Anyway, I just wanted to take the opportunity to acknowledge your review and apologize for not answering it immediately. I think the Valar (if they were looking in on the Elvish name lottery) probably did find it a hoot and I imagine one or two even going to tell Glorfindel's friends (Finrod, for instance) all about it. grin As for Roland's suggestion about choosing character names from fantasy movies or whatever, just points out how unimaginative he and the Administration actually are when dealing with the Elf Academy. And really, it's no different from people choosing to call themselves Arwen or Aragorn when doing role-playing. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. Sorry again for the delay in replying.

For the elves not to walk on the snow had to be very tricky. How did they make themselves sink down? Too bad they didn’t have a website that converts names in to elvish. That’s how I got my board name. The lottery was a good way to handle the situation. Had I been there, I would have wanted to know how they came up with all those names. Author Reply: Hi Tari. I'm in the middle of re-reading this story to make sure there are no typos and such because it's been nominated for a MEFA and while looking at the reviews for various chapters I've discovered that I failed to respond to this review of yours. Sorry about that. Anyway, for what it's worth, I'm sure that Elves are capable of consciously walking through snow when they need to. And most of those online name conversion programs are inaccurate anyway. At least we know that the names 'generated' by these Elves are real names. grin

LOL! I should have known the Elves would take charge of the names, as well! But really? "Pine Cone"? "Bernard"? shakes head This answers a question I'd been wondering about-- it's always a puzzlement for me in stories with Arda Elves living into modern times: Did JRRT publish his translations of the Red Book in that universe or not? Obviously, in your universe, he did not-- otherwise Glorfindel and the others would be taking a risk in using their own names, or even using Sindarin, since they might very well run into a "Tolkien geek". While such a person might assume that they were simply fellow geeks, some of their characteristics might cause the penny to drop and they could possibly get to wondering if Middle-earth was actually fiction. (I'm thinking, really, of Lily here. If anyone in the class might have been into Tolkien and Elven languages, it would have been her--and since she hasn't recognized Sindarin, or the name Glorfindel, I therefore deduce that LOTR and The Hobbit and The Silmarillion were never published in your universe.) (Of course, it would not have mattered about the many who had only seen the movies, if those had existed in your universe-- since none of the Elven characters you feature actually appeared in the films, LOL!) Author Reply: Hi, Dreamflower. Well, as I said in another review I decided that LOTR and Tolkien's Legendarium and therefore the movies based on them were never published. It just made things easier for me. And of course the Elves would take charge of the names as soon as they learned what their mortal friends were going to call themselves. grin

Ah, so the Elves can control if they are walking on top of the snow or through it? Had been wondering about that one, as it would look very odd to their mortal friends when they don't sink in or leave tracks. Ha - love the idea of Glorfindel, Elladan and Elrohir as Musketeers :) Now to see how long it takes before they reveal their true fighting skills ;) Why am I not surprised that in the end the Elves had to help them to find elvish names? Some of the ones they came up with themselves were not so bad, but real Elvish names are better! Though it must feel odd for the real Elves to call the mortals with names like Finrod, Arwen or Galadriel - I know it does for me. Author Reply: Well, I think they have to consciously make themselves walk through the snow rather than on top of it and having been in the Mortal world for so long I am sure that they don't really think about it too much. I don't think these three will have a need to reveal their true fighting skills but we will see towards the end of the story under what circumstances they and the others reveal themselves as Elves. At least no one is going around calling him- or herself Pine Cone! LOL And that has to be a relief to the Elves no matter how strange it might be to call some Mortal by one's sister's name.
