Umm...this chapter was so fantastic, I really don't even know where to start w this... Sam's hobbit sense and humor, Elladan escorting him, Aragorn and Arwen (yay, good for them for coming, Sam deserves it) and the Eaglewanting to be of service ... Yes. This chapter gave me many warm fuzzies... :-) Author Reply: Thank you so much. I really wanted to let Sam shine in this story, and it was a joy to include those who truly respect him, and want to be part of his leave-taking.

This is my favorite chapter of this very moving story - I love the warmth of Sam's last days in Middle-earth; and the joyful memories; and his touching the mallorn tree... Author Reply: Thank you. I envision his leave-taking to be as full and rich as his life had been. :)

I love this chapter so much! What love Sam was surrounded with. Indeed the luckiest hobbit or one of them! :) How interesting Elladan's observation that the Shire was letting go of Sam and Sam of the Shire so he could transplant himself into richer soil. What a wonderful time awaits him in the West. How marvelous that Aragorn and Arwen were there to say goodbye and the Rangers' there to salute Sam and the king's comment about it being too long since he was in the company of hobbits. Love Sam's excitement as he closed his eyes and trusted Strider completely. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: I'm so happy you love this chapter. In my heart and imagination, Sam's leave-taking is a peaceful and fulfilling one, as he looks ahead to what might await him. And I just had to give Aragorn a chance to say "farewell".

Oh, this made me all teary!! It was just too lovely. And goodbyes, no matter how heartfelt are always hard. This was delightful and I look forward to Sam meeting up with "Mr. Frodo" again! Author Reply: Thank you so much. I poured a lot of love into this chapter!

I was just browsing through this to try to find a glimpse of Aragorn and was richly rewarded! What a wonderful send off for Sam! Author Reply: I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter! :)

I forgot to mention in the previous review, how I liked Sam's idea how to discern the twins. Really clever! "Mr. Pippin told your father that he didn’t want to be sent back home tied up in a sack, and it sounds like you’re sending me off in one!” LOL! Great line, Sam! "With a proud and triumphant cry, Meneldor stretched out his wings" Ah, that is a really majestic picture of the eagle taking off! But, oh, farewells! They always bring tears to my eyes, but here is was also a smile. It was great that Aragorn came to take leave of Sam, with "a bit of fanfare"! Author Reply: Sam is ever so clever! And I like it when Elves are surprised by something (or someone). As with Gandalf, it usually comes from interaction with hobbits. :) I'm very glad you enjoyed this chapter. If you'd like to see a drawing of Meneldor in his flight to Vingilot, with Sam in his talons, it can be found here: http://shirebound.livejournal.com/1410041.html

Arwen's confession that she was glad not to have had to watch the ship slowly disappear... I could vividly imagine how heartbreaking that would have been for her. Author Reply: It's sad that she lost so much... thankfully, she also had great joy in her life.

How wonderful that Meneldor was able to be of service, and what a marvelous sending-off party Sam received! Author Reply: Thank you! Even eagles have dreams and goals, and this one will be able to fulfill his. I hope to post chapter 4 today or tomorrow. *hugs and bounces*

Just lovely. I adored this line: (The Shire has been gently loosening its hold on him, like a tree about to be transplanted into new, rich soil.) It is the perfect description for what was about to happen to Sam. I was struck by how very sad a life among mortals must have been for all elves that chose it. They have to endure loss so often. I'm glad Sam got such a fine send-off from his family and his friends. Author Reply: Thank you. In my 'verse, Sam has begun to dream of the West, and find comfort in its call. It's not so much a 'Sea longing' as one life-chapter closing gently and another one opening.

How do you do it? This is such an unusual story premise and so expertly told, I can't imagine ever being able to do such a thing. I have tears in my eyes after reading about the many partings of Samwise...imagining the sadness all would be feeling and the loss Middle Earth must feel. I love it. I can't say any more than that. I miss you. Author Reply: I think Sam returned to the Shire and, over his lifetime, elevated it to a new level the same way Aragorn did for Gondor when he became king. I love your idea of Middle-earth itself missing him. He cherished it, and was cherished in return. Thank you, my dear friend. Your words mean so much to me.
