| It seems that stupidity is contagious in the royal kitchen. You are not messing with the haryon. It can be argued that an eagle is not in a habit of catching flies e. i it would be beneath Finrod to retaliate, but he has a father, who could feel need to protect his cub. To paraphrase the words of a classic: If stupidity would be able to provide buoyancy, half of the kitchen staff would be flying like doves. I am not surprise that they have a bland potato soup if they are in the habit to server it immediately. Proper potato soup with dry mushrooms (fresh mushrooms are not aromatic enough), dark roux adding some colour, light roux adding texture, onion, a bit of garlic, carrot, parsley, cereliac, lovage, caraway seeds and lot of marjoram is not bland. But in must be prepared a day earlier (like goulash or tarator) to have time to mature. Author Reply: Hi Serindë. Well, as they say next to hydrogen, stupidity is the most common element in the universe. *grin* I like your recipe for potato soup. And most soups taste better the next day, I agree. | Glorfindel could very well be right about Amarië not being consulted, either. Not that I think she'd be happy with that any more than Finrod. *snicker* Of course, these two are a sore trial for Nàmo – and not only for him. Have to agree with Finrod – Isildil's going to be unbearable if he ever gets back to being Head Cook. I think I'd prefer him to be sacked. He just doesn't deserve the job with his attitude. Or send him to Nienna to get his head and ego deflated. After having to suffer under Isildil, I had hoped the rest of the staff would be more sensible, so I was a bit disappointed that someone tried to sabotage the soup. But Glorfindel managed the problem quite well, and I was glad the King and Queen reacted the way they did. And I was glad for Glorfindel – finally some success! As he was turning the tables on the saboteur, I felt quite smug on his behalf. But I'm wondering more and more who Marilla is and how much she truly notices of what's going on. All that sabotage ... why do I suspect that she knows about it and there will be consequences in the end? Author Reply: Hi Kitty. Sending Isildil to Nienna might not be a bad idea. *grin* I think some of the other kitchen help weren't affected by Isildil's authoritarian manner and feel a kind of loyalty to him since he's been acting as their master in the guild and all and that's why they have been sabotaging Glorfindel's and Finrod's efforts in the kitchen. | So Arafinwë and Eärwen turned the tables on whoever tried to cause more trouble for Finrod and Glorfindel. Good for them. Whether or not it will deter any futer incidents like this remains to be seen. Author Reply: Hi Tari. I'm sure those who conspired to ruin the soup and get Glorfindel into trouble weren't expecting the King and Queen to actualy *LIKE* a little spice to their soup. LOL! | And I wouldn't be surprised if Amarië staged her own little rebellion. She did it once before, she can do it again. If anything tips Amarië over the edge it'll be the wedding outfits with their lovely shades of pink and green. Oh yes. They'd tip me over the edge. I can't wait until she arrives - the dynamic between her and Finrod, combined with one Balrog slayer, should a lot of fun to watch. | I just had to take time out of an overly-busy day to read this, I've been enjoying this tale so very much. I have to agree, most potato soup is quite bland (my mother's recipie, which uses mushrooms, has a bit more spice to it). Some pepper sauce could go quite well, and apparently the King and Queen agree. Good for everyone for holding their tongues. The culprits will out in the end. It is an interesting thought that Amarie is getting as much input into the wedding as Finrod has been, namely - none. I think that's a shame. But knowing how overbearing her amme is, it is not surprising. I wonder it she might stage her own little revolution... | I am not fond of spicy things myself, though I do make a mean Chili, just not too hot! I was pleased to note that Glorfindel knows the correct way to cool his mouth with a peice of bread. At least Alilinel is up to the tricks that the other apprentices are playing and Arafinwe and Earwen liked the soup! Finrod is still having issues with the wedding and I am sure Amarie is too, but he does have at least one person on his side in the guise of the elleth,I for get her name, who is is charge of decorations! Glorfindel is still the equivalent of a 15 to 16 year old boy, he can be very serious one minute and very immature the next. Give him a couple of Yen and he will grow out of it, I just hope Aman will survive in the mean time! Huggs, Lynda Author Reply: Hi Lynda. More is going on inside the royal kitchen than one suspects. And you are right that Finrod has an ally in Mistress Terendulë (and her husband the Chief Gardener). And Glorfindel is, well Glorfindel. LOL! | Eärwen's reaction, "Oh! Finally someone figured out the proper way to make potato soup", was not the result the apprentice who "spiced up" the soup had intended, I would think. :-D I am sure the soup was tasty - I am fond of, ahem, well-spiced food myself! ;-) Author Reply: Hi Sunny. | I can see how frustrated Finrod must feel about everything. He is not as newly reborn as Glorfindel and has attained some measure of adulthood, certainly enough to actually marry and produce progeny of his own. Arafinwe and Earwen tend to baby him a little I think, but I can understand their anxieties especially when he and Glorfindel show their immature side when trying to deal with a perceived problem. However I honestly don't think that either of his parents or the people around them even consider what he went through in Middle-earth. He was a King in his own right and he sacrificed himself for a secondborn which was a noble thing to do. He died in a most horrendous way. I know that his parents must know the gory details, but you would surely think that they would take all of that into consideration with him now! He deserves to be allowed to grow up to some degree at least even if that doesn't include him getting a say in his own wedding arrangements. Let's face it most men run a mile from getting involved and everyone expects them to do that so I suppose that it's par for the course that Earwen and the mother of the bride are blithely going on with everyone without bothering to consult the two people who are getting married. Almariel obviously because she doesn't think her daughter needs to know! I am waiting for the arguments over the seating plan to erupt, that would be a funny scene to contemplate. With a bit of luck they won't serve the super-spiced potato soup to the wedding guests, although I guess the Teleri contingent would be overjoyed. I wonder if they would like Indian curry? Author Reply: Hi Shemyaza. I suspect you are right about Arafinwë and Eärwen, certainly Eärwen, as Arafinwë at least has been to Beleriand and we must assume that he saw the ruins of Nargothrond. Unfortunately, Glorfindel and the other Reborn surrounding Finrod are still at a 'young' stage of their development and I think Finrod is simply allowing himself to be sucked back into that mindset. One last fling before he settles down to married life, as it were. And we'll see how the seating arrangements are made eventually. I'm sure the Teleri would LOVE curry. LOL!
