Peregrin Took, wandering the wilds of Middle Earth... :-P Gandalf fascinates me -- so multilayered. I have always wanted to write more about him, but I find that I can't really get inside his head very easily, and so I have always written him from someone else's POV. I have enjoyed these two chapters, and am anxious to see where the next go. Thanks for writing! Author Reply: Oh, yes, wandering without a minder at that point in Pippin's development does make one gulp, doesn't it? Heh! I have always loved Aragorn, Frodo, Sam, and Gandalf about equally, and love peeking inside the Wizard's curious brain from time to time. Thank you so for the comments!

Finally getting caught up (a little at least) on this series. Sorry it's been so long. Poor Pippin. Lovely chapter. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Yes, Pippin is exhausted and worried sick, and finally able to let down his guard to a familiar individual! Thanks so!

Arwen goes to the ford to help fetch Frodo? That's a nice compromise between book and movie! I like this, the way Gandalf keeps to the background in the immediate bustle because he has wider concerns to consider. Author Reply: Yes, in my-verse Arwen goes to the Ford as one who might best bolster both Frodo and Aragorn at this point, who had to be almost ready to collapse after two weeks of apparently aimless wandering with very little rest for himself. And Gandalf would sense, I think, that he'd do best to be there to greet those coming in Aragorn's company once they arrive at the door. It must have felt so chaotic at that moment!

A look at a tender side of the Maia/Wizard that few writers think to reveal. A very touching moment, for the very very old wizard and the very very young hobbit. Author Reply: We know that the Wizard seemed to waver between frustration and concern for Pippin, and that he was very tolerantly answering Pippin's interminable questions on the ride from Rohan to Gondor. We also know he was a close friend to old Gerontius, and that this seemed to transfer itself to his relationship with Bilbo and Pippin, although the relationship with Frodo appears to have been more to mutual respect and honor. So, I am certain that the Wizard would be concerned at how young Pippin would fare on the journey from the Shire to Rivendell. Thank you so!

I wonder how different things would have been if Fatty Bolger or Folco Boffin had gone with Frodo instead of Pippin. There could be a whole AU written, based on that single premise. Think of the stone in Moria, or the Palantír, or Denethor, or that troll... Author Reply: Tolkien had several ideas of what Freddy might have done, even having him at one point accompany Gandalf on Shadowfax to Bree, chasing after the trail of Bingo and his companions. It could be an interesting exercise, following one of the Master's abandoned threads.
