Now that's interesting, a room that 'stinks' of pity and Saruman noticing it. I would think that Bilbo's bedroom would also then. Sharkey must have really had to hold his nose when he saw Frodo! :) No wonder he hated him. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: At one point JRRT says that the Maia recognize one another by scent. So this is my nod to that convention. Saruman never understood the true value of Pity.

Sharky's arrival seems so normal but you show us his malice so well. He knows nothing of the true value of pity. Author Reply: No, no he doesn't. He resents it, because of his mistaken belief that to accept pity means that the one offering it considers himself superior. It's the mistaken belief many have who will not accept Pity or Charity, believing that to do so somehow diminishes them. But he is responsible for his own diminishment, and is now simply wallowing in malice.

How he must resent being in a room prepared for his perceived rival and replacement, and how he must look forward to defacing this home as he can, seeking to hurt both the White Rider and the Ringbearer for his own losses. never mind those losses were due to his own mistakes. Author Reply: I think at this point he resents anything at all that has anything to do with Gandalf. His arrogance was never tempered, and he never showed any signs of regret for anything he'd done-- and of course, he was NEVER to blame for ANYTHING; it all had to be someone else's fault!

Ugh! Suitably and thoroughly nasty, and deluding himself to the last.
