Of all those in Middle-earth, I think Bilbo would have been the most inclined to understand Boromir's weakness when it came to the Ring. He himself had lusted after the thing in Rivendell and turned into a horror for his nephew. I agree with his hesitancy. His love and concern for Frodo would outweigh any understanding. In fact, it might have made dear Bilbo more concerned, having felt that lust. Thankfully, the Ring is gone. As for Frodo, he had spent a good two months with the Man from Gondor and seen Boromir's strength and courage through their journey. The last moment's of the Man's life negated the previous months' and yet, I'm sure Frodo had respect for Boromir. If you read the chapters surrounding Boromir's death, Tolkien clearly states that even Gandalf looked upon the Man with respect. And the Men of the Mark thought highly of Boromir and descried the news of his death. Great chapter. I love Frodo's loyalty. Bless his dear heart. Author Reply: I think also the active imagination that he and Frodo share would make an event that he (Bilbo) did not witness even worse, especially one that threatened someone he loved. I hadn't thought it was Bilbo's lust that was making him understand Boromir, but it's certainly Frodo's lust that it is. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

After all, Frodo and Boromir's healing are now intertwined. And I can certainly appreciate Bilbo's mixed feelings about this situtation! Author Reply: Oh, I like that, 'intertwined' and I think only because of that will they both heal. And Bilbo will have his mistrust erased because of it too. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

I can't blame Bilbo for fearing for Frodo's safety. What a fascinating story. Author Reply: Le hannon, my dear! Yes, I think Boromir is going to be on probation for a while. :) Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
