It has to be a strange feeling to walk through an area you once knew well and find it so changed. I mean, I can see that in my hometown, where roads and houses have changed over the decades, but the lay of the land is still the same. It's hard to imagine that whole islands and hills just vanish without a trace. But you must have had fun looking at maps and imagining how the ice has changed everything. Hm, I can see Denethor's point. This journey is giving the Elves a purpose again and thus raising their spirits, and they are really now living and working together, not just side by side like before. Poor Gilgaran, I can't blame him for being nervous about another river crossing after that horrible experience earlier. It's good to see that the others understand and don't laugh, but work together to help him and make him feel better and more safe. Author Reply: I would imagine very strange, Kitty. I know that when I visit the town where I grew up I can see all the changes, but essentially the topography is the same and in spite of the changes things are recognizable. I did have fun trying to imagine what changes might have occurred, based on what I knew about the effects of glaciers in my own part of the world, like the deeply gouged lakes and such. A longer journey than they'd wished, but Denethor is right in being pleased about the relationships now coming to be. And I like his reasons for asking Maglor to take on the leadership for the group. And they trudge on... Obviously they didn't get a break from the unforgiving landscape. Denethor is a good leader, no matter what he thinks. I think more than one of the group needed to wake up to living again. Having friendships being formed is a side-effect of the travels, I didn't think about, but it makes sense. Sharing hardships makes for strong bonds and will tie them all to the living world. I wonder how the Amanians will react to all of them. Their experience is pretty unique. Author Reply: Hi obsidianj. Well, considering that they are at the tail-end of an ice age, they'r not going to get that much of a break. And you're right that more than Maglor needed to wake up to living again, so this adventure is good for them all whatever happens. We will eventually see how some of the Amanians react to them. It's sad to think of the Shire, Rohan and Gondor being gone. When the elves leave, there won't be much left. (Is Elf Academy on vacation?) Author Reply: Hi Tari. It is sad and when the Elves leave there won't be much left except us humans. Elf Academy 3 has not been written yet. I will get back to it once I finish another project, perhaps sometime this summer, though I don't think we'll see in here until early next year, so you'll just have to wait, but you have this story to entertain you in the meantime. grin

So the world is changing - hills are eroded by flowing water, rivers change their courses, and even mountains are flattened by glaciers. All of these are natural processes, and so the changing face of the world is just part of nature. Not that this makes these changes easy for the unchanging Elves to deal with. But by now they are hopefully inured to the scenery not being like it used to. And it is something they just will have to deal with. Denethor is truly a wise ellon, in that he regards the building of relationships - friendships, as well as possible marriages - to be at least as important as the journey itself. And it is not as if they have an appointment for tea with the Valar on a specific date. ;-) Author Reply: Hi Sunny. And it stands to reason that the world would change all things considered. And Denethor knows that friendships and other relationships are far more important than whether they arrive at Valinor on a particular day. Very interesting, but I will tell you that I'm stating to get cold every time that I read a chapter, luckily for them, they are elves. Does Maglor have to apologize to the whole word? What did he do to Arvedui? Author Reply: Hi Fantasia. I have no idea what Maglor might have done to Arvedui, but apparently he feels he failed the last king of the Northern Realm in some way, or maybe he's just hedging his bets, feeling it's best to err on the side of caution. Glad you are finding the story interesting. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.

Ohh, you faked me out there near the end. I thought it was going to be quicksand/sucking mud in that river and was practically holding my breath till they were safely across. Whew! I'm sure poor Gilgaran wasn't too pleased either. Good on Maglor for breaking the tension. Today's lagniappe...I ran across this picture and immediately thought of Aragorn and Gandalf in the fane. I don't recognize the photo, but I was last in Madrid in the 70s and much has probably changed in the city. As for sending a PM, if you click on my name and then click on it again once the author page comes up, it will show you my email address. I recommend that you copy and paste the address into your preferred email provider. That way, it will show up in my personal account which is not Microsoft Outlook. I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. I so love finding these little gems in my email :) We had a snow storm last night that was suppose to just tie everyone up for days. It didn't. I am still working from home as I live an hour away from work and at 3 in the morning; I just didn't want to see if the news was wrong on what shape the roads were in. This story just reminds me what a wimp I am. siiiggghh. They do the "Blue Balls" thing here where everyone jumps into the lake during the month of February. Never been brave enough to do that. And here they are walking through water in sub zero weather...um nope. Not I. Give me my electric blanket, warm woolly socks and 5 layers of cloths any day. And might I add...buuuurrrrrrr! But they are not giving up hope, and they are bonding in many ways. :) Author Reply: Hi Laer. I'm sure reading about these people braving the elements during an ice age makes everyone appreciative of electric heat and easy transportation. But, in spite of thing, they are still hopeful and forming many kinds of bonds, even Maglor. Thanks for leaving a review. I really appreciate it.

Your excellent description of a very long, cold journey make me grateful for modern transportation. Love the way the individuals are waking up and taking notice of each other again. Hope does that.
