What an aptly named ficlet! Author Reply: Thank you! It is one of my favorite passages in the book, and I felt it worked for this moment.

It is always darkest before the dawn as Merry learns and then the light returns and there is such joy - love this and the title. :) Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: That's exactly so! He would not be nearly so exultant if he had not so recently been in such despair. The title, of course, is from the Professor--I thought it a appropriate quote.

Oh, yes--the one moment that he perhaps never imagined happening as it did, but truly the one he now recognizes as the one for which he had hoped all along! Yes, the title says it all, even as the Master recognized. Author Reply: That particular passage is probably my favorite in all of RotK, and it also echoes a similar passage in the famous Fairy Tale essay, when JRRT describes "eucatastrophe". This moment had to have its impact on both of Frodo's cousins as they witnessed it; I'd shown Pippin's reaction before--I thought it was time Merry had his turn.
