Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 17 Review(s)

Hm, I think Vorondur has a point here. It is really a matter of opinion if Finrod has the right to mete out punishments to everyone here. Maybe the ones that came from Valinór with him, but the others? But now I am wondering – if Finrod would publicly acknowledge that he has no power over them, would that change anything in the way the others look at the problem?

*sigh* Why do I have the feeling that Vardamir and Eärnur refusing a sincere apology is going to do nothing to diffuse the tensions? And that everything that happened during the last hours is going to enlarge the rift between the Wiseman and Valinórean Elves?

Poor Vorondur, he has really more than a bit of bad luck today. But I was glad that his wife didn't get angry at him, but on his behalf. I think it was what he needed, her tearing him a new one about his attack on Eärnur would have not helped his mood. Understanding was much better.

Well, at least here I agree with Finrod, the others should not have turned Vorondur away. Glad to see Finrod's not happy with them, either, and that they at least made some peace.

Author Reply: As the saying goes, they're not in Kansas anymore. Even Finrod needs to get with the program on that issue, but at least he recognizes that Vardamir was wrong in not letting Vorondur see Eärnur to apologize to him. Some of them are acting rather childishly. Vorondur is lucky to have Holly as a wife. They've been through much together and it's always good to know that you have one person on your side no matter what. And Finrod shows his character once again to brave the blizzard just so he could personally apologize to Vorondur for the behavior of others.

Thanks for leaving a review, Kitty. I appreciate you doing so very much.

Oh now, you know I had to go look up those signs first thing. Before I found the set with the Elf Storage, I found quuuuuiiiiiiite a few others that were most definitely naughty. *cackles* Elf Storage, For All Your Elf Storing Needs.

Why yes, use the healers as guinea pigs. Start with Eärnur and Vardamir. Perhaps with the more uncomfortable tests first. :P See how they enjoy being the patients!

Kyle is growing on me. Stop making me like your characters, Fiondil. You keep doing that and then bad things happen to them. *grin* I still say a taser would work wonders, but whatever you gotta do, man!

"you didn't crush his trachea completely" Wow, there's a sentence you never want to hear. I suppose it is, however, better than the alternative. That Elf strength really is scary. But then Finrod did manage to kill a werewolf with his bare hands, so it is not surprising.

Aha, and now he finds out about what really happened with Glorfindel. They really need to get that ring back. I wonder if they could teach Kyle or the other mortal doctors something about that spiritual healing they do? Aragorn could do some of it, but maybe the bloodline is just too diluted for it to be possible.

The Elves seem very caught up still in the monarchy mindset. Those history classes mentioned in the other chapter are a great idea.

As for Ron himself - buddy, I feel for you. It was very sweet how people continually stopped to help him, though. Elf or not, you don't leave people out in the cold on the side of the road. The guy and his son, the nurse, the man walking his dog. It's easier to have a bad day when you know you're not alone.

And I always can't help but wonder if sometimes delays happen for a reason. Like you lose your keys, end up running late for something important, but then drive past a bad wreck you would've been involved in if you'd been out on the road at the usual time. Doesn't make bad days any better, but maybe makes you think, anyway.

Also - Elves chatting online. Hee, that makes me happy.

Anyway! Long review for a busy chapter, and I'm caught up now. Sorry for the delays lately, life's a tad bonkers.

Thanks and take care!
-Kevana

Author Reply: Those signs were hysterical and the funniest ones were the naughtiest ones, I think.

Anyway,I'm glad Kyle is growing on you. I think he's redeemed himself from when we first meet him.

Ron was lucky to have so many people looking out for him. And, sometimes I have to wonder about things seemingly going wrong and you feel all put-upon, but then you learn that something worse could've happened if you hadn't misplaced your keys or something when you did. Sort of scary how close we come to disaster without really realizing it.

Glad you enjoyed the chapter, Kevana. Thanks for taking the time to review.

Poor Vorondur! That was really a rotten day, but at least his wife is on his side. I loved that Finrod was running through the snow storm to get away from the temptation to wring some necks himself. I got the feeling in the last chapter that Vorondur beat him to doing violence himself. The discussion between Finrod and Vorondur about Vorondur not recognizing Finrod's authority was interesting and a new wrinkle for Finrod. So far, he probably thought the tension was about whether Glorfindel is leading them or he. Now Finrod learns that Vorondur is his own man and will follow of his own choice or not. Interesting.
I loved the casual way that Kyle dropped the bomb about Glorfindel slipping his leash. That was too funny.

Author Reply: The day can't be too rotten if your wife (or significant other) is on your side. *grin* The discussion between Finrod and Vorondur was actually very important because what applies to Vorondur also applies to every other Wiseman Elf. They all willingly gave up whatever rights they might be able to claim as subjects to one of the elvish Crowns, as well as any titles they might have had when they became US citizens, including Glorfindel and the Twins. That is a reality that Finrod and the others need to understand and accept.

And Kyle had no way of knowing what a bombshell he dropped when he mentioned Glorfindel slipping his leash. I'm sure Finrod had some hard words to say to Mir and Ernie when he saw them later, which is why he ended up at Ron and Amroth's place for dinner.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Hello Fiondil!

You know it is good that I now have to change my starting place with: Poor Vorondur!! Instead of the lovely and much beloved Balrog-Slayer who thankfully is now in very good hands!! Really when Ron has a bad day he really has a bad day... poor ellon, but at least he acted responsible in trying to apologize to Earnur and then go and see how Glorfindel is doing... also totally love his wife!! All this time he was nervous about her reaction and she just tells him that he was remiss in not trying to strangle Vardamir too, hahaha.

Before I didn't like Kyle, but he is growing on me!! Such a smart cookie and really he is right, it is better to be prepared and ready for bad situations. I am going to join that fan club the other reviewers mentioned, hahahaha. Now I want to see what will happen when Finrod and the other elves learn that they are not to go anywhere near Glorfindel or any other patient... it's not going to be a pretty sight.

Really poor Finrod too!! To discover that the ones originating all the problems are the ones from Valinor, it must be pretty daunting to him... he will need all the help that he can get from the Wiseman Elves. Just curious... why don't they have the Valinorean Elves join a World Politics class?? Or a Political Philosophy class?? It would do them good to learn about the different forms of government the Mortals have, so that they can better understand their attitudes and those of the Wiseman Elves... just saying.

Now I think I will also join the others on the cliff house, to await the next chapter...

Great chapter as always!

Monalex

Author Reply: Hi Monalex. It's nice when your spouse takes your side (for once). LOL!

Kyle seems to be growing on a lot of readers. He's still an arrogant so-and-so, but he's not a fool and he's a dedicated doctor where the patient always comes before ego.

You're right that Finrod and the others do need to take a civics class like people take who are working to become US citizens. Maybe Finrod will ask Daeron or Glorfindel about that and they can arrange for the Elves to attend such a class later on. It should help them get a handle on things.

Thanks for leaving a review. It's appreciated.

Oh, Ron did have a very bad, no good day didn't he!

Yep, working with gang members and druggies would make keeping a hypo of fast acting tranks handy make sense. Kyle, under all that arrogance is one smart cookie, other wise he would not be in the position he is in.

I wonder if it was Earnie's decision not to see Ron or was Mir going all protective on him. Now there are a couple of pig headed idiots I would like to see Namo have a chat with! I wonder how Namo feels about them, perhaps we should contact Meranwe about setting up an appointment for them?

I don't think Holly was being a loyal wife per say, though I am sure she would have been there cheering him on, she was only agreeing with him that Ron and Mir had acted like idiots and one of the only ones so far other than Kyle and the Twins who have!

Good to see Finrod coming down on Ron's side of the argument and it probably was a good idea for him to get out of the house for a time, I think there has been enough neck wringing going on for a while!

I do hope Serende and the Twins enjoy their stay in Fairbanks and that the little surprise the Valar have in store for them is not too surprising.

Have a Peace full and Joyous Easter,

Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: Hi Lynda. I think Námo would prefer the Elves to clean up their own messes without him interfering. Finrod is more than capable and when Glorfindel is recovered, he'll have more help in that respect. We'll see shortly what the Twins and Serindë are up to in Fairbanks and what has Námo and presumably the other Valar amused.

May you have a Peace-full and Joyous Easter as well. Hugs back.

This chapter is chock full of goodies, but the thing that had me laughing was the way Ron came home and went right into the sympathy ploy. He's obviously learned something in a few dozen millenia of marriage - make her feel sorry for you, THEN drop the bomb! And Holly just rocks - friends help you move, real friends help you move bodies. Or so I've heard... :-)

Finrod really does need to have a good crash course in US History and Civics so he understands citizenship and the way government works here and now. I could see him having a legitimate claim on those who just came from Valinor (at least until they become citizens - if they ever choose to do so), but certainly not on the Wiseman Elves, and I'm glad Ron started the conversation for him.

I just about choked on my tea when I got to the part about Dr. Stoner's edict banning Elves from the ICU - I think we're going to have to start holding Kyle Stoner Fan Club meeting in our cliff side clubhouse!

Author Reply: Hi Lyana. Yeah, Ron's had a LONG time to learn that trick. LOL! And I've heard the same saying and it's very true.

All the Valinórean Elves and not just Finrod need a crash course on US (and world) history and civics. It has to be strange to think that Elves would not hold allegiance to one crown or the other. Democracy is a new concept for them all.

And you-all can hold Kyle Stoner Fan Club meetings all you want. I'm sure he would appreciate it. *grin*

Thanks for reviewing. It's very much appreciated.

Small, snarky thought about Vardamir's little comment that if Eärnur had died from Ron's assault, Ron would have been a kinslayer. If Glorfindel had died from Vardamir and Eärnur screwing up his treatment, would they have seen themselves in that same light?

BTW, here is a bit of music in honor of Ercassë in this chapter. :D

Author Reply: LOL! Cute song and very true.

And hypocrisy is not an exclusively mortal trait.

Thanks for the link, Sunny. I'm sure all my other readers will enjoy it as well.

Drat, but those Valinórean fools never learn, do they? Aside from Finrod, that is. He took Ron's declaration of independence graciously enough.

Loved Holly's reaction! That's a loyal wife if there was ever one. It would be good to learn what Serinde and the Twins are doing, though - and are Alex and Derek ever coming back?

Author Reply: Hi Soledad. Holly is indeed very loyal. We will learn very shortly what the Twins and Serindë are doing and we'll be seeing Alex and Derek soon enough as well, I promise. Thanks for reviewing. It's appreciated.

Poor Ron, his day was a total mess, but at least there were some amusing times. Loved the scene with the burnt-out neon signs, those can be hilarious. Tensions are rising and I fear that more drama is to come. Ron's right though, technically Finrod cannot dole out punishments anymore. This is going to be very interesting.

~Lin

Author Reply: Hi Lin. Yeah, Ron's day was a total mess and we've all had days like that to one degree or another. Glad you liked the burnt-out neon signs. They are a scream and some of them that I saw were very, very naughty so I couldn't mention them here. Anyway, you're right about more drama to come. Thanks for leaving a review. I greatly appreciate it.

A good thing that Kyle is a trained medic, considering how he knocked Ron out. Mir and Earnie have some growing up to do now, and I rejoice that Finrod is out trying to mend the fences.

As for the rest of the day--it's typical of a day gone bad!

Author Reply: Yeah, it's very typical. Been there, done that, and haven't we all?

Kyle is way cool and one smart cookie. I'm sure Vorondur's estimation of him went up a couple of notches after this. Mir and Ernie do need an attitude adjustment. Maybe this incident will help straighten them out.

Thanks for reviewing, Larner. Happy Easter.
