A Holiday Feast  by Larner 6 Review(s)

LOL! Meatballs by the gross!

I used to use stale bread or leftover rice, and then when we went gf, I switched to gf oatmeal, and then since I went off grains for the most part, now I use grated carrots for that bit of extra texture. And yes, definitely minced (or chopped) onion!

Author Reply: I use oatmeal and dried onion flakes. As is true of at least one other person who commented on this, I have a good deal of problem digesting onions, and particularly fresh onions. I have to be careful even with dried onion flakes, I find--just enough to flavor and no more or I'll become ill. I'll have to try grated carrots!

Meatballs are made of ground beef. How would anyone in Middle-earth have learned to grind beef into the texture required for meatballs, hamburgers, etc.? (I'd love it if somebody in that culture had figured out how! =))

Author Reply: Well, as Hobbits had access to tobacco, taters, and other plants that were brought over from the Western Hemisphere, and used suspenders and buttons that weren't commonly used by the more medieval peoples that surrounded them, it would not surprise me in the least that they'd found out that a screw device combined with a cutting blade and a screen to cut against with holes in it could be used to grind meat. Many technologies have come and gone and then returned again in the last several thousand years, after all. Ancient Egyptians had flush toilets long before Thomas Crapper brought them back.

The Hobbits and the Dwarves did reportedly live side by side and were frequently in communication even as Arnor dwindled into a number of poorly connected peoples protected by the ancient Kings' Rangers. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that between them they managed to come up with such things as meat grinders!

Hmm, mounds and mountains of mouthwatering meatballs! :D I wonder if they'd accommodate someone like me with an onion sensitivity...I can handle dried onion flakes but little else when it comes to onions. (The problem really is sulfenic acid, the stuff that makes people cry when cutting onions.)

Other than the onion problem, these do sound good!

Author Reply: Believe me, I DO understand your onion sensitivity, because they do a number on my stomach as well. I, too, rely on onion flakes and have to be careful even with them.

And they sound good to me, too!

I'll be over for a few of these too. :)

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

These drabbles are delicious. I love all the desserts! A good thing I just ate or they would make me hungry!

Author Reply: They make us all hungry, I think! Heh! Thanks so, Linda!

There's no way you're keeping me away from this feast! Your story makes me hungry.

Author Reply: It's affecting all of us much the same, I suspect. Heh!
