| Everything sounded wonderful until you got to the pea soup which is my least favorite. Author Reply: Not everyone needs to like everything, after all. I never took to rice, most fish, or olives, and cannot eat onions, peppers, curries, or chilies. I have to be very judicious eating tomatoes, fatty foods, cucumber, or cantaloupes. Otherwise I'm apt to make myself ill! So, I'd be careful at this feast, but still wouldn't feel deprived in any way. | |

| Pea soup, hm? That should warm them up! :) I've tried to make pea soup once; it turned out a complete mess, and congealed quickly into inedibile glop. I am sure the Hobbits know more about making it than I do! Mine did not have carrots in it or mushrooms (though I don't like mushrooms much anyway, sorry to the hobbit hosts) :( but I might like them in this soup, I don't know! It's not an intolerance thing like onions, it's just the texture and flavor is weird to me. Author Reply: I'm going to try it in the new year. A friend makes wonderful split pea soup. And I feel toward rice as you do toward mushrooms. | |

| Mushrooms, eh? Why am I not surprised? I hate pea soup myself, but there is a version with lamb meat and mushrooms and lots and lots of estragon even I find amazing. Author Reply: Well, as we're talking Hobbits here I'm certain that mushrooms would show up somewhere, although there's not a large choice of fresh mushrooms available in the middle of the winter. I did see a stand of quite dark ones the day before yesterday, though, although I'm not experienced enough to tell whether or not they were edible or what variety they might be. I'll have to get the recipe for that version of pea soup from you--sounds as if the Hobbits of the Shire would truly like it, and possibly me as well! Heh! Although I'm not certain what estragon is. | |
