It's going to be some party! And now I'm thinking of how the hobbits might have observed First Yule when just setting out on the Quest, however quietly and wistfully... Author Reply: I know. You're just coming up on that in Bill's story, after all. I have that done in "In Empty Lands." Rather sparse compared to what they'd have known back at home.

Okay, I'm definitely envious now. In all the work-related insanity all I've managed to bake were two measly sorts of cookies instead of the 25-30 I usually do. I could really use some Hobbit neighbours right now. Author Reply: I know. My two days off were spent in cleaning, hauling stuff to be given away out to the car, and taking a trip to see Big Bro and his family to deliver his birthday presents and their Christmas gifts. He'll be 69 tomorrow. Argh! When did we advance to senior citizen levels?

It's truly wonderful to imagine our beloved hobbits sharing such a bounteous feast. Author Reply: I do believe none will come away hungry! Heh!

So Frodo reformed from being one the worst rascals in Buckland? I admire his restraint. :) I will be over for some of the breads too. It is good this is for Yule so it will go over 2 days. I would explode otherwise. I still may. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Oh, yes--that meeting with a strange Big Folk in that byre caused him to rethink his ways. But he knows he doesn't have to sneak food to be filled, after all. And having two days to work on the Yule Feast is a definite advantage!

Quick breads! Yum! I wonder if cinnamon rolls would be included - of course that would involve being able to acquire cinnamon, so perhaps not, but I adore cinnamon rolls, and also what my family calls "monkey bread" or "pull-apart bread", which is made in a Bundt pan or tube pan out of pieces of dough rolled in melted butter and topped with sugar and cinnamon (there may be more to this, but if so I forget), piled into the pan and baked. I've seen other variations on pull apart bread online, including a savoury one made with garlic butter and herbs to serve with an Italian dinner. Author Reply: Being yeast breads, cinnamon rolls don't usually count as quick breads. I often make Challah, the Jewish Sabbath bread, which is intended to be broken apart, having been made in a braid. But it, too, is a yeast bread. I do love it, though, and I definitely have my saffron on hand for when I make a loaf next week!
