A Long and Weary Way  by Canafinwe 8 Review(s)

What a wonderful description of the feast. The food, the revelry, Aragorn sitting there not quite comfortable and then the song to commemorate his deeds as Thorongil. I can understand that Aragorn is not comfortable with that. Then at the end when he is dozing off from too much food and wine and has to be helped to bed. It was a marvelous feast and a marvelous chapter.

Author Reply: I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter! It made such a change from all the dreary labour before: it was fun to write!

I can't EVEN put into words just how utterly addictively enjoying this chapter was. It had everything---humor and chagrin at Aragorn's clothing---oh, the poor man, to have to endure wearing pointed boots! But I have to admit the embroidered tunic sounds charming---I'd wear it myself.

And then of course the entire feast was beyond spectacular... the description of Aragorn's worry about maneuvering around---and I did love this:

He raised his head and let his eyes glint regally, and he passed into the hall.

Aragorn showing his true heritage there... as he rarely has a chance to do, playing the beggar's part so often.

Ah, the food! The food descriptions were fabulous, as were the songs and entertainment and the overall glorious feel of it. But my favorite part? Aragorn dozing at the table and having to be carefully led and put to bed. Lovely!

Author Reply: Aah, thanks! It's refreshing to be able to enjoy some humour, and the wood-elves can always be trusted to deliver. Nice to know you like my clothing designs. ;-)

The feast was interesting to write for just that reason: it is a side to Aragorn's character that he is so seldom at liberty to show. So much so that it feels a little uncomfortable when he does (for him, I mean, not for us!). It's always nice to know when the food comes out well. I MUCH prefer writing about food to preparing it.

Wonderful.

I love your description of Gandalf's assessment, and the hazy, almost surreal feeling you capture so clearly in the last few paragraphs.

This:
'It is the price we pay for our valiant deeds,' Gandalf declared stoutly. 'Once in a while, someone actually takes notice and commemorates them.'

I smiled at Gandalf's dry wit, more than this once, and remembrance of Bilbo.

The verses were well done!

Author Reply: Thank you: I'm pleased those last paragraph's came off well.

Ah, the wit of Gandalf the Grey! It's tricky to write at times, but I do enjoy it.

I'm so glad you liked the verses! I'm hardly an expert in poetical composition, so it's a lovely relief to know they worked well. Thank you!

I really enjoyed the glimpse into the craft, position, and interaction with the cordwainer, tailor, and bard vis-a-vis Aragorn, Mithrandir, and Thranduil. I think you captured both their work and their social positions perfectly.

Author Reply: Thanks! I find it fascinating to explore the lives of "ordinary" Elves, and the true workings of these realms -- the things that the hobbits never see. I'm thrilled to know you enjoyed it. Cheers!

There's always so much going on beneath the surface of even the most merry of gatherings.

It was strange to sit thus, listening while one's own deeds were memorialized in song. It was stranger still to hear how one night's dread and bloody work had been elevated to the cool purity of legend.

That's a wonderful song! Gandalf's words make me wonder how many songs (complimentary or otherwise) he's heard about himself over the long years.

Author Reply: Thank you. I'm sure that Gandalf has had the experience MANY times before. Now you have me wanting to pry into some of the less complimentary songs... ;-)

I really appreciate your kind words on this. I debated whether to include the song at all, so it means a lot to know it passed muster. Thank you so very, very much!

One of my favorite chapters of all LOTR fan fiction!! This had everything to love about elves, Gandalf and Aragorn! Thanks does not begin to cover how I feel.

Author Reply: Oh, my goodness: what high praise! I'm honoured, and so very, very glad that you like it. Thank you!

I really like the tailor and his "cheeky work of art"! He and the cordwainder must have plotted it together. It is hilarious to think of Aragorn on the return journey with his new boots and clothes (especially if he and Gandalf have to take a certain ferry)!

The feast sounds delicious and I liked the glimpse of Legolas and the song at the end.

Author Reply: Thank you! Oh, those wood-elves! It's lovely to have Aragorn properly attired at last, however awkward he may find it.

I'm so glad you liked the feast, Legolas's brief appearance, and especially the song. Thank you so much!
