This has been a wonderful story but this last chapter has been particularly poignant. Glad thanks for your tale!

It is sweet to repay for kindness and shame those who were not so kind. I like it that Aragorn gets the chance to repay all that helped him on his journey. Author Reply: I'm glad! It is quite satisfying for the reader, too, but most importantly it is good for Aragorn's wounded sense of self.

Ah, so nice to see that Freya is on the road to recovery, thanks to Aragorn! And the Beornings--how I nearly hate to leave them. I think Aragorn does, too. That was a lovely bit with the ferryman's son. In fact, I am QUITE thoroughly enjoying this gentle, relaxed pace of travel and the banter and companionship between Aragorn and Gandalf. I'm so enjoying Aragorn's thoughts to how lucky he is to be traveling home instead of still on the road alone, frozen, and hungry. I can smell the fresh air and see the sunshine here... very nicely done. I know that Aragorn and Gandalf are both concerned about the future and that weighs heavily on them, but for not it's just two travelers enjoying their freedom. Author Reply: Yes, Aragorn does regret the parting -- though of course the allure of the road before him takes the pain from it. I'm happy you liked the scene with Makan, and the gentler pace of the chapter. I imagine much of their joint travels were like this, in between crises. Quiet companionship and steady progress and simple peace.

He would have made an excellent bard if, you know, the whole king thing hadn't worked out. I was certainly captivated! I'm so glad we got back to the ferry. It's perfect how you dealt with the earlier episode. And that tunic is certainly coming in handy... Author Reply: Why, yes, he really would have! So pleased the payoff at the ferry came out well: thanks!

Oh, lovely. I'm glad she'll recover. I fear I skimmed, so I have no quotes to quote, no specifics to touch upon. I do love the interaction between Aragorn and the ferrymen. Very just and insightful. Author Reply: Thanks! I'm glad the scene at the ferry met expectations. Cheers!

That is such a lovely chapter, wonderful! The children and then the ferry, so nicely done. What could be heavy handed was not, it was just right. Author Reply: That's fantastic to know: thank you. I tried to use a light touch: there's always that risk of going too far with these sort of events.

A happy chapter. Aragorn can eat, Freya will survive, Aragorn gets a lapful of little Beornings, the journey goes well and Aragorn was able to give the ferrymen a lesson. And Gandalf started his day by combing his beard. (I had to go back and read it again, to make sure I read it correctly!) Everything is almost too nice. The cheeky tailor would be quite happy to know what an impression his work made on the ferrymen! Author Reply: Yes, Aragorn's earned a few happy chapters! In any other circumstance, it would have seemed silly to mention Gandalf's facial haircare routine, but of course he must have one. ;-) You're right: the tailor would be delighted and probably quite smug if he knew. As for 'almost too nice', be careful what you wish for...

‘You gave me your pity when most I had need, and spared me a swim that no man should make. I shall always be grateful. Please, take the coin – in earnest of the fare of the next passenger who cannot pay, if nothing else.’ I love that so much. What a wonderful encounter between Aragorn, Gandalf, and the ferryman... and his sons. And oh, the pleasure of knowing that Aragorn has at last rested, eaten well, and the worst of this journey is behind him. Author Reply: Thank you for your kind words. I'm so pleased that you liked the interaction, and it's particularly lovely to know that line stood out. I'm equally thrilled to have Aragorn enjoying a few creature comforts while he can.

Great lesson for the ferryman' son. Thank you. Author Reply: Thank you as always! Human nature makes it unlikely that Aragorn's earlier show of stern command actually taught Makan the most important thing about this encounter.

Love how you are going full circle now. By the way what does 'lar' means? And just something that might interest you. In our national language of Malaysia 'makan' translates to 'eat' in English. *grins* Do you perhaps have a Malay dictionary with you, doc? Lol. Can't wait for the next chapter. To Imladris! Hopefully both Mithrandir and Estel gets to speak to the border guards once they cross over the Bruinen. *hint hint* (: Author Reply: 'Lar' is Quenya for 'pause' or 'gap'. I also post over at another site that doesn't allow the use of asterisks as gap-markers. That's absolutely fascinating! I had no idea at all, but thank you for sharing it with me! It's kind of ironic, actually, considering what Aragorn was yearning to do on the morning of that first crossing... Ooh, you're relentless! ;-) I'll try to post very soon and relieve the suspense.
