| Poor Smeagol! (I seem to be pitying characters a lot lately.) But Frodo sees the truth. The only way to save himself is to sacrifice himself... if Gollum had not taken the Ring at the end, only Frodo's falling into the fiery depths of Mount Doom would have saved Middle Earth. Now you've put me in mind of an AU... Author Reply: Glad i inspired you for an AU! Thank you! Frodo from early on probably had idea he could not relinquish the Ring easily. Perhaps i have explored some foresight into his thinking that Gollum would be the only way to help Frodo rid the Ring since probably Frodo understood him to a certain level therefore leaving Gollum to guide him all that time. | |

| And, alas, he was nearly right. At least he took the Ring with him. Author Reply: It is a chilling ending but i don't think Tolkien meant for it any other way. | |
