The Unquenchable Light  by Virtuella 3 Review(s)

Well yikes - that was an adventure no one expected! A lovely look at their traditions and celebrations, though. Still, I have the feeling that her worries are not so misplaced as all that…

Author Reply: Thank you. I enjoyed inventing the lantern festival, so I'm glad you enjoyed reading about it.

I love the banter between mother and son, especially regarding the use of "always". (Or not using it.)

The lantern festival sounds lovely, as do the royal gardens and the procession.

Oh dear. Olan was worrying me; I was beginning to wonder if a kidnapping might be in progress. And then the story takes a sudden turn with the chilling prophecy. I actually cheered when the Archseraph turned up! I'm glad the boy was quickly reunited with his parents! Whew. (But for some reason, I'm still not convinced of Olan's honorable intentions... Did he mean something more nefarious, yet realised he wouldn't be able to get away with anything once the torches and Archseraph came into view? Only time will tell.)

And again, oh dear. Is the Archseraph truly naive, or is he simply trying to encourage his wife? (In one of my stories, Pippin speaks of the Dark Lord's intention to cover all of Middle-Earth with darkness complete and never-ending, which is a far cry from "hatred for Gondor" alone. I had also thought of that while reading an earlier part of the chapter, when I was contemplating how Sauron would take great satisfaction from extinguishing the glowing colours of the lanterns – and the spirits of all the free peoples – forevermore.)

Author Reply: The Archseraph is maybe naive, mainly he is trusting what Alatar and Pallando have told him. The way I conceived it, Sauron never in the past bothered exploring this far into the East. He had Numenor to focus on at first, and then the Alliance of Elves and Men, and then of course he lost the Ring. He's known about Kuz only for a few decades, and yes, he absolutely is planning to enslave them, but it's not a priority at this time.

Thanks for your comments!

Hi Virtuella.
This story about a far off land in the East of Middle Earth is so interesting. It is so difficult to find stories set during the War of the Ring from the point of view of the Eastern people.
I love your take on the story that the Blue Wizards encouraged the resistance against Sauron in the East. And it is so nice to see Entwives playing their part in this fight.
If you don't mind may I ask if you based the culture of Kutz on Indian culture? The presence of the peacocks as well as the vegetarian culture reminded me of India.
Thanks for reading this and I hope you update soon.

Author Reply: Hello, thanks for your comments. The way I imagine Kuz is a blend of the four major Eastern cultures - India, China, Japan and Persia.

I have more chapters ready, just waiting for them to come back from proofreading.
