The Unquenchable Light  by Virtuella 2 Review(s)
LindeleaReviewed Chapter: 12 on 2/15/2025
I am fascinated by your description of how the Dwarves live when they are at home. I am trying to work out my own vision of such things as I draft the story of a visit to the Lonely Mountain in the Fourth Age.

Commotion of the Brain: sounds about right.

Poor Jarin. Concussed and unwittingly having eaten flesh. But I sympathize. I would probably be vegan if my body tolerated grains and legumes better. I was vegetarian for a long time when I could still digest dairy. I don't really like the idea of eating animals and try not to think about the subject too deeply.

I can see where Jarin might find Dwarves difficult to read. Their culture is quite different from hers, as are (most likely) their idioms, gestures, attitudes, and communication. Their elevator is "magic" to her. (Is her dragon "magic" to them?) Hmmm. And the thought had crossed my mind that the Dwarves could help repair the flute, master metal-workers that they are, but I didn't realize (has it been mentioned in an earlier chapter?) that the riders must make their own flutes. Going on... The king is not sitting on the throne but behind a desk. I wonder...

Diri is an interesting character. He appears to be on Jarin's side, though it's difficult to tell. I wonder what this project is he's working on? I like the king though, so far. He seems fairly down-to-earth.

We have been waiting for days for one of you having the sense to summon one of us and hear Wan’s news. Interesting. Is it that the dragons cannot come unless summoned, or will not?

But you managed to distract me from the threat to the Archseraph, and now I'm even more worried than before. Whew. And I haven't forgotten the odd happenings around the rulers' son. The plot thickens...

Author Reply: [I didn't realize (has it been mentioned in an earlier chapter?) that the riders must make their own flutes] This is where we first hear about this. There wasn't any reason previously for anyone to mention this.

I'm probably a bit influened by Terry Pratchett and the notion that to dwarves "king" means something like "senior mine supervisor"...

[Is it that the dragons cannot come unless summoned, or will not] Jarin explains that in a later chapter, but basically, they can come though from their end, but only if a set of random conditions are right.

Author Reply: Thanks for all your comments. It was so nice to come here and find them all!

Dear Virtuella, imagine my astonishment and utter gladness when I returned to SOA after 2 weeks of exams to find new chapters awaiting. I love the turn the story has taken. Nara's debate with Jarin on the New Way is interesting. So was the appearance of a water lift. However I don't understand how the lift works with hydraulic pressure: is it something like the system in car brakes? Also is there any historical evidence of such lifts used in any part of the world before electric lifts?
Take care
Leithian

Author Reply: Thanks for checking in. Glad you are still enjoying the story.
Yes, hydraulic lifts are a thing in the real world, but I have no idea how they work. I imagine the dwarf ones are somewhat different. ;-)
