This is a key conversation that I imagine the king and steward would be having . Indeed there were a lot of responsibilities that Faramir had to shoulder ! I liked the slight tension in the beginning about him being prince . Author Reply: I'm glad you liked the slight tension! Yes, Faramir has a lot of responsibilities, even after the King returns. I can't help smiling at the irony of Faramir arguing, all unknowing, against his own reward. His angry rejection of the idea was surprising at first, but his arguments make sense. I love the images that punctuate the discussion: swordplay, the chosen arrow... altogether fitting for two warriors. The progression of emotions as the discussion continues is natural and believable. And then, after he finally seems to accept the idea, the piling on of duty upon duty and responsibility... LOL! I can almost hear Faramir saying, 'Bring it on! What're you waiting for?' (But, of course, he's probably much too noble to state it in such common street-brawling terms.) Author Reply: I'm glad I made you smile :) I wasn't sure how other fans would take Faramir's "angry rejection of the idea". But I imagined that, given his background--always having to be on his guard with his exacting father, and their many disagreements-- it wouldn't be easy for him to accept honour or praise without questioning it. Not to the extent of him being insecure, but accepting praise does not come easily to him. Yay, you love the images of swordplay and arrow! The piling on of duty upon duty--Aragorn is wise, and he knows what makes Faramir ticks. | |

That’s not how I expected that conversation to go either! :-D It is good to see Aragorn doing things like double-checking on his motives, even quickly and privately - a wise person knows the importance of self-reflection and can manage it without self-doubt or seeming wishy-washy… Author Reply: Aragorn is wise.
