Can't believe that Legolas did it.

I heavily dislike Legolas' attitude towards Gloin. Gloin is a ridiculous jerk (really, the only mode of discussion with this idiot would have been fists), and Legolas is the heir of magnificent King Thranduil. To be reasonably proud towards an stupid and STUBBORN dwarf would have suited him much better! Author Reply: There is nothing of nobility in random fistfights, surely.

I had written the LONGEST review of this chapter because there was soooo much in it that I just loved...and this #!# computer just erased the whole thing! So I'm going to make this short before I pick up the baseball bat over in the corner and beat this thing to death!!! Legolas "at large" in the mountain - now there's a thought! Legolas - pugnacious? The image that word paints boggles the mind! Legolas on Nain's punishment - GOOD! (I concur!) "You old gremlin!" you go, Kali! "No mortal had ever outlasted him in a duel of wills." - You know, being immortal does have its advantages! :-) mules in the form of Elves (or dwarfs, as the case may be) - everybody has them, I guess! "To keep company with the horses...I find them simpler companions." - Amen. And my favorites that underscored the importance of this trip to Legolas _ "Legolas had worked too hard already seeing this alliance established to let a splinter strike it a death blow." and "This wine is still new, and I am willing to wait a few years for it to mellow." He is so patient and optimistic about the whole venture...and willing to do what ever it takes to see it succeed, if not now, then in the future. That is a real friend! I can just see him pulling Gimli aside after giving Gloin the Sereguren as payment for the debt, and saying, "Can I cook, or can't I?" I remember you saying that this story was about 40 chapters...I sense the end is coming quickly...I will try to act like an adult about it wails loudly in distress...then again, maybe NOT! linda Author Reply: Oh, I hate it when they do that! I remember when ours put a real crimp in my work by blacking out the monitor intermittently. Usually a few firm slaps would bring the lights back on, but eventually we had mild-mannered Daddy literally standing on the desk and beating the e-snot out of it. We fingally gave up and got a new monitor. :) I'm sure even the nicest Elves have bad days now and then. The Dwarves have left a definite impression on Legolas, but they haven't intimidated him much. ;)

Back from holiday and I find three chapters. Joyful. You are so clever to write all that dispute and still keep everyone in character, most enjoyable.Perhaps Legolas is storing up troubles of his own by giving that blasted gaudy necklace away, but good on him. Great story writing, well done. More more. Rose Author Reply: I'm sure he'll get the lecture later, but I don't think it will be too terrible after the initial "You did WHAT!!!" Just a bit more, then I have to do my homework. ;)

Heh. I like Kali. Legolas is right to leave, I fear--you can't make friends with everyone. But he did meet several Dwarves of goodwill, so his trip wasn't wasted. Author Reply: Certainly not. :) Maybe in a few years things will have cooled off a bit. Or he could just wait and go visit Gimli in Aglarond where there will hopefully be a lot of like-minded dwarves.

This has just got better and better. Since they got to Mirkwood, your writing is just full of life and richness. The characters are utterly faithful and this is such a joy to read. I love Kali (the Destroyer in Hindu religion as I am sure you know) She is so strong and resoltely honourable. My favourite character (Apart for L & G of course). I hadnt cuaght up for a couple of weeks so the last few chapters have been a real gift. Thank you. Author Reply: Actually, I had no idea! I just put together what sounded like a dwarvish name. Interesting, though; and even rather appropriate. And you're welcome. :)

Legolas BRIBED Gloin? My goodness! I confess that I was extremely skeptical when Gimli first suggested it, but you actually pulled it off in a realistic and convincing way, that did not insult either party. The ransom was well portrayed as a traditional custom of Dwarven culture, and I'm very very glad that Gloin did not truly forgive the insult done to him at the offer of a bit of mithril. He was forced into politeness by an honored custom, and neither he nor Legolas are going to be friends any time soon, but they can at least put the past behind. Very very well done. Did you plan that when you had Legolas bring the Sereguren to the Mountain? It feels like something that came in handy at the moment, but perhaps you are better at plotting your stories than I am. Oh, and I loved the bit about Thranduil just outlasting his mortal opponents. Hee! Now that is an advantage an Elf might be tempted to use. I'm not so sure about the idea of flogging as an Elven custom - it just doesn't seem like something they would do. Exile seems more likely, for a set amount of time. But I am so glad that you made it clear that they don't use capital punishment - ever, would be my view, given the experience with the kin-slaying. Marvelous chapter. You've given Legolas a graceful out, without weakening any of the characters or making their interactions anything less than absolutely authentic and realistic. Nicely done. Author Reply: Yes, I did plan that, though I tried to make it less than obvious. ;) But don't let that fool you; usually my plot development is a far cry from the greatest in the world. I guess it would depend on the particuars of the offense. I don't imagine it was terribly common, but in extreme cases we did have Elves tossing Elves off the wall in Gondolin. So I suppose captial punishment was not unheard of, but still not something they would encourage. Even after Silmarillion, I have a hard time imagining everyday ordinary Elves having any kind of crime rate to speak of, but I'm sure there were at least a few bad apples to be dealt with over the years. :)

Would it be too much to hope that Leggy could knock Gloin in the back of the head as well? LOL Ah, this chappy had me seething and sad at the same time. I was so sad that despite all Leggy has tried to do, he has met with stubborn refusal at all ends. And I was so mad that he did! Curse these stubborn dwarves! I bet his hand hurts worse than he is letting on huh? And I'll say again, poor Scatha, I hope his tail starts to heal soon. I had hoped that Thorin would do more to talk Legolas out of leaving, but he didn't. And I had hoped that Leggy announcing his upcoming departure would soften the dwarves heart out of shame, but alas, that didn't happen either. Tis a sad thing really, that the only thing that could put an end to this feud is mithryl. I think I've lost a lot of respect for Gimli's father! I really don't think I like him much anymore, not even for Gimli's sake! He's a greedy, selfish, stubborn, pig-headed old coot and pooh on him! There, now that I've said it, I feel much better! I only wish Kali had let him have it even worse than she did! If I were her, I'd even be ashamed to be married to him. Though, come to think of it, as mad as she was at him, I'll bet she does carry a little bit of shame at how Gloin has treated their son's friend. Sad that Gloin can't even put aside his dislike and anger for the sake of his son. Some father he is! Pooh on him again! LOL Well, another wonderful chappy! Thanks so much for getting it up so fast! :) Now, I think I shall leave Saturday a much happier person! :D Well, actually, this was still a bit of a cliffy so maybe I'll leave content, instead of happy! LOL ;) Can't wait till I come back so I can read the next one! :) Author Reply: Actually, I'm sure Gloin's a decent guy when nothing's bothering him. We just haven't seen him at his best here. Give him a few years to get used to things. :)
