The lovely Rosie Cotton indeed! And I an just imagine a red faced Sam. I did like the actress Peter Jackson chose to play his version of Rosie.

Did you have a particular tune in mind when you wrote this?
I was listening to The High Kings while reading and just so happened to start the first line of the poem-song at their song 'Health to the Company' started. Granted the tune's probably a wee bit melancholy for a love song but would you know the cadences match up perfectly?

Author Reply: Yes, actually, that was what sparked the story. "The Yellow Rose of Texas" is an American folk song that dates back to the war between Texas and Mexico in the early 19th century.

The song was stuck in my head one day, and I realized how well it could apply to Sam and Rosie.

But I am quite sure there are many other songs that might scan to the words. I love the High Kings; I was thinking the other day about Pippin in Minas Tirith singing "The Parting Glass" with some of his Guardsmen friends!

Aw, this is SUPER cute. I love how you captured Sam's shyness and his adorably earnest spirit in his poetry!
By the way, have you ever read the Chaucer poem "To Rosemounde"? It remind me of this kind of Sam/Rose fluffiness.

Author Reply: Thank you, dear!

It's been years since I read any Chaucer! I shall have to check that out!

Oh, what fun!

I'm sure Samwise had to forgive them... and what a treasure, sure to become a family heirloom.

I don't think I'd ever read this one all the way through on my archive trawl, but it's exceedingly good and put a smile on my face, from Sam attempting to write love poetry to the "somewhat unexpected" smooch to Merry and Pippin's "unrepentant grins" and "You can't be responsible, period."

Lovely, lovely fluff. :-D

Author Reply: I'm glad you liked it! I was very nervous about posting it--the earworm that inspired it is not terribly "Middle-earthy", LOL! But it was a fun story to write, and yes, it is pure unrepentant fluff!

I *think* I read this a very long time ago, but how cute! Loved reading it again. Leave it to Pip and Merry to come to the rescue!

Author Reply: Yep! Pip and Merry just couldn't resist saving Sam's hard work!

This is really sweet! And I could sing it too!

Author Reply: Thank you! And that *is* a catchy tune, isn't it? *grin*

awww what a rascally thing for Merry and Pippin to do but it did turn out for the best-- that was a really sweet poem indeed! ::melts upon reading it:: =) sweet sweet scene. :D

*giggles helplessly* Aww! How sweet...and very clever of our mischievous ones, even if it *was* wrong to look at Sam's private writing. Oh, I can just see sensible Sam Gamgee throwing aside his practicality and trying to write poetry for his lady-love! :-) I love this, and the song was wonderful! Oh, that would melt my heart to hear that from the lips of my betrothed... *looks dreamy* Okay, I'll stop. :-) Wonderfully done, and now I'm off for more! God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Oh how lovely to get a new review for this one! I'm really very fond of it, considering that the plot bunny came when I couldn't get a certain tune out of my head, LOL!

No, they shouldn't have peeked. But Tookish curiousity got the best of them.

I am glad that you liked the song. I did feel that however un-Middle-earthy the *tune* really was, the words conveyed just the way Sam would have been feeling at that point in time. I just had to make them more hobbity, so to speak.

This is such a lovely little story -- it's nice, seeing Sam doing something that he does in canon. Even if he ended up getting help, unwanted and unasked for. *grin* But it is very charming -- and the end is very sweet.

Author Reply: *grin* I do try to be canon friendly, as you know, so that makes me happy.

And yes, the help was not wanted or asked for, but it was done with love and good intentions, so he couldn't really resent it. And let's face it, that Took and that Brandybuck are charming rascals, aren't they.
