The Lovely Rosie Cotton  by Dreamflower 17 Review(s)

How lovely!

I'm glad you show Sam writing a song, as he does in canon. He's rather good at it (as are you) even if he doesn't realise it. But Merry's right, one never thinks one's own work is good enough.

It was a real collaboration, between Sam having the idea and writing most of it, Pippin recognising that it was pretty good, Merry having the idea to save it and then writing the last verse, and then Pippin singing it.

I loved how Merry and Pippin were unrepentant about looking at Sam's personal papers and taking the unfinished song to finish up. Of course, Rosie would think it was wonderful even if Sam wrote words to Chopsticks, but that's how much in love with Sam she is.

It was a very thoughtful thing of Merry and Pippin to do for Sam and Rosie, though I wonder if Sam was slightly upset that they had called him brave and true in a song that he had mostly written. For I'm sure that Sam would have been too humble to ever write such a thing himself. Thankfully, Merry was able to write it for him.

Author Reply: You know, I was quite surprised to see that I had not replied to this review. I am sure I remember seeing it. I may have been interrupted before I could write one. I *am* sorry, my dear!

That is a truism for all of us who write, I am afraid. We read with envy the words of others, and think we just won't ever measure up. But one thing I've learned in the fanfic world--the very same person I envy, may be actually envying me. It's a humbling, yet comforting thought.

Yes, it was a true collaboration. Pippin would know a good song when he saw one. And that Brandybuck always plans ahead...

The Brandybuck and the Took would have no shame over indulging their curiousity--especially since they are fond of Sam, and would hate to see his work thrown away. Ah, but they would be very *good* words to Chopsticks, wouldn't they? LOL!

I agree, Sam would never have finished the song in that way. Yet that last verse just seemed *right* to me, and so I knew Merry would have written it, not only as a way to finish the song, but as a way to express his own love and his gratitude for all that Sam had done for his beloved cousin Frodo. And Pippin would have felt the same.

Oh, thank you for pointing this out to me. I thoroughly enjoyed it, from the despairing poet at the start to Pippin's little addendum and Sam's pleasure in his friends at the end.

*happy sigh*

Author Reply: Oh good! I hope it cheered you up, and helped make your rotten day better. Thanks for telling me!

That was very cute! I decided to read it, like some of your other work, because you hinted at it in New Reckoning! It was nice to see Merry and Pippin's gift, as well as Sams although it never would have made it so far without the cousins, to Rose! I'm sure she loved it far and above anything else she could have been given! Thank you for a nice read!

Author Reply: Thank you for reviewing. I have had a few stories that sprang up out of Reckoning. Most of them, like The Dare and Tribute, I thought about for a while. But this one just kind of came to me because the song was stuck in my head, and I just had to write it down. Silent Partners was basically because the plot bunny tried to hijack Ch. 30. But there are several other stories waiting that will kind of fit into Reckoning.

I LOVED this! It was all perfectly in character, so sweet and hobbity... Sam and Rosie are probably my favorite LotR couple, and it's great to see them in the hands of such a capable fic author. I can definitely see Sam sitting in Minas Tirith, thinking about Rosie and trying to turn his feelings into poetry. And I can most definitely see Merry and Pippin snatching up his work for later use.

Thanks for the lovely read! :D

Author Reply: I'm so glad that you liked it. My main concern was that the tune that put it in my head did not seem very like a song one would hear in Gondor, I was afraid that would just mess it all up.

Once the main phrase came to me though, I couldn't let it alone. And the sentiments of the original song, of separation and longing to be with the beloved were very much in line with what Sam would have been feeling.

Merry always plans ahead. 8-)

Thank you for the lovely review. I'm glad I was able to please you.

Don't you just love it when these little stories come to you and won't leave you alone until you write them down? I'm certainly glad this one came to you! It was so sweet! I don't see why Sam thought his song was so bad, but then I suppose Merry's right - everyone is always more critical of their own work.

I hope you're not critical of this. It was lovely :)

Author Reply: Thank you for your kind words.
Of course, Sam was homesick for his Rosie, and I don't think *anything* he wrote would have suited him at the time. But Merry and Pippin were better judges of it. And it's like Merry to be thinking ahead.

I suppose my own criticism of it is the song that put it in my head in the first place; it's not very Middle-earthy, is it? But I guess it could be worse. The other day I had the Oscar Meyer weiner song for an ear-worm. Thank goodness *it* didn't give me any story ideas. I shudder to think. 8-)

Oh my, that was so sweet! How adorable. Sam is just the best. And Merry put on the perfect ending. Very cute.

Author Reply: I could just imagine Sam struggling, trying to get it "perfect"; and Merry knew it needed an ending--it had to include Sam.

Absolutely wonderful! I love this. :) It's so sweet...I just want to give Sam a big hug myself! I'm glad you wrote this. Very nice and very in character all around. Excellent job!

Author Reply: Thank you. Now I have a good use for "ear worms". It's what happens when you get a song stuck in your head. 8-) As I said it just came to me while driving to work yesterday.
