Somebody should tell the members of the Company that smoking can cause lung cancer! =)

Oh what fun! I have thought in the past that Legolas and Boromir had quite a bit in common - but it hadn't occurred to me that they would be the only ones who didn't suffer with withdrawal symptoms if the pipeweed ran out!

Author Reply: Yes, LotR was definitely a book of the author's times: seven out of nine in the Fellowship were smokers! This is probably completely opposite of what it would be in the modern world!

I can certainly imagine the two non-smokers bonding over this!

Author Reply: Thanks! I had so much fun with this one!!

Very clever! From the title right down to the last line!

This certainly would not have been addressed in the books, which were written during a period of time when it was quite the norm to smoke. However, it makes perfect sense for those seven to be having tobacco withdrawal symptoms. While Gandalf would have been smoking for ages and Aragorn and Gimli for decades, the hobbits do seem to be rather fond of their prized leaf and are no doubt just as dependent upon it. I reckon poor Bilbo went through the same thing when he first settled at Rivendell.

Legolas and Boromir - now *there's* a pairing you don't see often! Quite refreshing to see the smug interaction between the two of them. I imagine there were a lot of eye rolls between them while the others went through their smoking withdrawal.

Very amusing little story!

Author Reply: No, it wouldn't. And it was something I wondered about--where would they get leaf when they ran out? And I had always noticed how Legolas seemed to want to stay downwind of the others--really, think of "Flotsam and Jetsom" and Legolas wanting to go outside as soon as the others light up. And I think Boromir would have felt much the same way.

And yes, I was imagining the eye-rolling.

LoL! Oh, my! ... lol I just love the image of all those poor guys being snappish with each other...And Legolas and Boromir standing off in the corner just watching wearily (and no doubt with some amount of amusment) at their ruffled companions. I know I am going to be laughing about this for days to come...how clever! :)

Author Reply: It just seemed logical to me, LOL! Even Gandalf in Moria says "I have been too long without smoke." And Legolas and Boromir were the only non-smokers in the entire Fellowship. *snicker*

Well, I'm going around catching up on all your ficlets that you've been posting. I adore this one! I guess the company got kind of dependant on the pipe-weed? lol, they'll soon settle down. I liked the interaction between Legolas and Boromir. You don't really see that often. Good little story!

Author Reply: Poor Legolas and Boromir were the odd ones out in this situation, LOL! It is fun to do interaction that is a bit different from the usual!

Oh, can I relate to this! Very cleverly done. Thank you!

Gandalf in need of a fix. Now *that's* scary! Very cute and funny. Boromir and Legolas are the smart ones, never getting hooked on that poison. Now they get to sit back and watch everyone else be miserable. I feel for Sam when everyone finds out he still has a bit more stash. They're going to pounce on him, lol. Thanks for the laugh!

Author Reply: Oh yes! Gandalf had probably been smoking for hundreds of years! Gimli and Aragorn had been smoking, I'm sure for decades. The hobbits are younger, and though they had not been smoking as long, I would imagine they smoked even more often. I like to believe that the variety of tobacco in JRRT's M-e is not as nasty as the modern stuff, but it was definitely addictive, as Gandalf admitted in Moria. As to Legolas and Boromir, well, Elves probably never smoked since it would offend their Elven senses, and pipe-weed was not known in the South, so Boromir had probably never even heard of it until his journey.

As for Sam, can you imagine what kind of "emergency" he might think he would need pipe-weed for? LOL!
Glad I gave you a giggle.

Clever! I had no idea where this one was going. Quite amusing. I'd never thought about how hard it would have been to give up their "habit" of pipeweed. An interesting look at things.

Author Reply: Well, you know, Gandalf told Pippin in Moria that he had been "too long without smoke", so I figured that would go for all the smokers in the group. I got to thinking about it when I noticed that Legolas suddenly wanted to go outside as soon as Merry and Pippin passed out the Longbottom Leaf in Isengard.

Now why would he do a thing like that, do you think? 8-D

That was funny! I can feel with Boromir and Legolas, as I myself hate smoking. After plagued by it from all the others, they have indeed reason to be smug!

Author Reply: I thought it a bit amusing. Imagine them trying to stay upwind of everyone else all the time. And of course everyone else is going to smell like smoke.
