Elf, Interrupted: Book One: Glorfindel Redux  by Fiondil 7 Review(s)

Now, to learn who's really behind it this time.

Melkor was a whiny but determined baby, you know? Too full of himself by half. And too good at bringing out the worst in those who listened to him and who continue to do so.

Author Reply: Interesting analysis of Melkor... and as Tolkien states, he so imbued himself into the fabric of Arda that all of Arda (even Aman) is his Ring. A really scary thought, that.

I am so behind reviewing! And I so loved these two chapters! Ok, short but to the point. I LOVED the way they caught the missing Sulimondil! Go Glory! And Finrod was brilliant in this chapter. Darn it all! Like I needed more characters to drool over... um, admire. *grin* I really like how you handled bringing them before Ingwe and all the warriors saluting with weapons, but the best part (yep, you guessed it!) was Námo showing up! I do so love your portrayal of him. I don't remember if I commented on that line of his "Sometimes being good and noble really sucks!" But I LOVED that line. You had me rolling.

and I think you updated and I didnt' get an alert. So I'm off to find out. Great couple chapters here! I love every minute of this tale.

NiRi

Author Reply: Well, you're not that far behind, so don't worry. *grin* I'm glad you enjoyed these last two chapters, especially Námo showing up at Ingwë's court. Thanks for reviewing.

I loved the interplay outside the Vanyar fighters’ compound. Also all the fighters joining them later for the walk to the palace. [Mental picture of all the fighters in the camp -- plus archers, squires, family members, and hangers-on -- sitting in their tents, totally bored ... bored, bored, bored ... looking out the doorway every few minutes (very bored) in hopes that something interesting is happening at Finrod’s compound ... they might be doing something interesting ... they might be going somewhere (“We’ll come too!”) ... even if they’re merely entertaining visitors from the palace, it’s still more exciting than sitting in the tent being bored.]

“Yes, I’m curious about that too.” -- Námo is so good at what he does! (In this case, intimidating elves.) And his fashion sense here is spot-on.

“There is more at work here than meets the eye. These two may indeed have nothing to do with spreading the rumors. Others may well be playing their own game" -- Hm. I can’t believe Súlimondil “accidentally” forgot his appointment with Ingwë, or that he was in his cousin’s tent for no reason. On the other hand, I *can* believe they might have had little if any involvement with the rumors. On the *other* hand, if Súlimondil wasn’t hiding to give credence to the rumors, why *was* he hiding? I can even be really paranoid and believe he sat in the stands near Glorfindel that afternoon deliberately intending to goad Glorfindel into rash behavior, with the goal of discrediting the Reborn. Well, I’ve been expecting Bad Guys At the Tournament....

How fortuitous that Vorondil’s a hero when his parents are present to hear about it.

Sitting in the stands with Ingwë the next day: I’m sure Veryandur will have a ball. (What sort of picnic/carnival food do elves usually have at these shindigs?) I trust Súlimondil will be surrounded by guards, so there’ll be no doubt as to his status!

The Tol Eressëans will have a lot of stories about the Valar to tell when they get back to the island. Hopefully the word will get around.

Author Reply: I'm sure that many of the people sitting in the encampment were thinking those very thoughts and perked up when Finroda, et al marched by with Súlimondil and Valacar being escorted to the palace. Finrod and Ingwion probably had a time convincing them that not *everybody* could fit into the lesser audience chamber. *grin*

I'm sure that Súlimondil, at least, was cognizant of the rumor and may have even started the one about him being killed which is why he was hiding out in Valacar's tent where no one in Vanyamar would think to look, not knowing of the connection between the two. It was fortuitous that Vorondil just happened to be in the tent tending to Valacar when Súlimondil walked in, otherwise they might still not know where he was and he could've made good his escape.

I'm sure the Tol Eressëans and not a few of the Amanian elves will have *many* tales to tell about the Valar at the tournament that will keep them busy by the fireside for many a night of taletelling. *grin*

Hah! The rumormonger were caught. Although I agree with Lord Namo, they are probably not the only ones spreading these false tales. They might have started it, but there are enough others that believe in them enough to spread them.

Is the next chapter already available? I got an alert, but the link didn't work.

Author Reply: Sorry about that. I accidently clicked "Publish" when I was trying to click "Preview" so I could see if the chapter had formatted correctly. The next chapter is ready but I won't be posting it until the weekend.

And you are correct that while these two may have had a hand in the rumors, others were more than willing to pick up torch and run with it. Such is the way with rumors, even among the elves.

I love hearing rumors for once! Not that I believe them or anything. It's just that I have a tendency to not be aware of my surroundings and not be sociable so I am not really hearing what is new and what is not. Unless of course I read it on the internet or in a newspaper.

I don't blame Veryandur for being afraid. I know I might if I was his age! How old is he anyway? When people say there is a vast difference between elves and men in reality there isn't that much at all. They both play, eat, rest, and work. That thought just came to me when I read the passage with the elflings, Eruanna and Lindorille playing with Yavie. Narmolle is such and adorable name. I never thought it would mean 'wolfie' though. May you please explain how you ended with that name? I just don't see how.

I am glad Ingwion won his match. I wonder whose better Findarato or Ingwion? I apologize to any Ingwion fans out there but my $Money$ is on Finrod! (remember, HE was the one in Middle-Earth) Is the next chapter on the tinco or parma list? (I know it's one of them I just sort of forgot)

Vorondil has grown up so fast. It's hard to believe he was the same elfling from the chapters when he conspired against Glorfindel.

If I am using the word correctly Sulimondil's name is an oxymoron. He is a bad elf yet his name honors the Elder King.

I keep forgetting to say this but congradulations on the MPA 2007: 3rd Place: Undying Lands! You deserved it! Though I do think your story should have won 1st place. You have *123 chapters*! Who in their right mind would write that much, even with determination? (Not blaming anyone here)(It's just and expression) I am glad though that you are writing this.

Namarie!

Author Reply: _Narmo_ "wolf" + _-llë_ "diminutive ending", so, "Wolfie" in child-slang. I happen to have a teddy bear that has been with me for over 30 years. It was given to me as a gift by a friend when I was undergoing treatment for cancer back in my early 20s. It proved a good companion and comfort to me then as now. The bear's name is "Beowulf" which is an Old English kenning for "bear" since the name means "bee-wolf". I usually just call him "Wolfie" and decided to put him into the story without specifying what kind of soft animal toy it was, letting the readers fill in the gap themselves.

The next chapter will highlight the tinco-list fighters since they had a break from fighting the afternoon before. Before the end of the tournament wnen all but the final match(es) between the two champions are described I will post the entire list so you will be able to see who fought against whom and who won each match.

Yes, Vorondil is shaping up quite nicely and should be an asset to elfkind when he fully matures. He still has 4-5 years to go before he reaches his majority and it may be slightly longer before he regains the emotional maturity that he lost after his Judgment. Veryandur is about 10 years old in human terms, just young enough I think to need a soft toy for comfort, especially in these unusual circumstance that are so different from anything he's ever known before.

As for Súlimondil... part of the irony of this story is assigning a name to a person that sometimes is incongruent with that person's character.

Thanks for the congratulations. I suspect I didn't get a higher award because the story is incomplete, but I'm just honored that it won anything. And as I'm a leftie, I'm always in my "right" mind when I'm writing! *grin*

another excellent chapter! love your characterization of the kings - especially arafinwe and ingwe. glad Fin and folk were able to capture the ones they went after so they could save the day. love the loyalty everyone shows finrod, too.

look forward to hearing arafin tell finrod about life immediately after the kinslaying.

what was the thing between ingwion and namo about at the end? hmmm

the intrigue in this tale is incredible. as soon as one prob seems to be solved we learn it is but one piece of the vast puzzle or one symptom treated of the whole disease.

sorry for the missing caps. it's hard to type one handed...

Author Reply: Hi ellie. Don't worry about it. Sorry you're forced to imitate Beren or Maedhros for the time being and hope you recover soon. Most likely the conversation between Arafinwë and Finrod about the Darkening won't take place in Elf Interrupted, but it might show up elsewhere in another story. *grin*

As for the intrigue and the conversation between Námo and Ingwion.... yes, it is one vast puzzle and there are many pieces that need to be fit together for it to be solved. This is just one of them.

I enjoyed this chapter thoroughly and am glad that these two got caught. Of course I don’t mind at all that Súlimondil got a bit ... err ... damaged in the process and that Glorfindel was the one to do it.

And Námo showing up was perfect, even if he was not allowed to do more than to watch. But his warning that there are even more who spread these mean rumours left me sighing. It is truly sad that it came to that at all, though it is not wholly unexpected. Oh well, if they spread the rumours further during the night and the next morning and then Súlimondil is shown to the masses it will give some people a bit to think about, I suppose. And the elfling sitting in Sador’s lap would be perfect to disprove the other rumour.

It seems my feelings were correct – there will be much more going on than only the Tournament. This Tournament gets more interesting with each chapter! So I can’t wait for the next update - it's truly a wonderful story, Fiondil!

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. Glad you enjoyed this chapter. It was a lot of fun to write, especially the beginning part where they are at the Vanyarin encamnpment trying to get in.

Yes, I'm sure Glorfindel felt some bit of satisfaction in being the one to deal with Súlimondil.

Námo, of course, didn't have to show up, but most likely did just for amusement's sake. Watching the elves squirm must have been fun, especially since all he really had to do was to intimate possible retribution from the Valar without actually coming out and saying it.

Tournaments, in fanfic or in real-life, are just the backdrop for the real drama of human (and elven) existence. It's the excuse for everything else that goes on during that time.
