Elf, Interrupted: Book Two: Glorfindel's Quest  by Fiondil 11 Review(s)
EärillëReviewed Chapter: 69 on 2/20/2010
Oh, I thought that Elves slept with their eyes open? But if Edrahil was really that exhausted...

I found myself liking this method more than the intervention of the Valar. It showed how the Elves could do several things on their own, although they fumbled with it, like children learning things. And here your fondness of dressing up your Ainur was back. *grin* I always like how you put meanings to the accessories they wear. That makes everything so much more special.

It surprised me that Edrahil was lucid when he had his hand on his king's neck. I thought it was included in the blood-trance? Then he should not have been aware of anything... But it did set up a valid reason for him to flee. It must be quite horrible for him. And his longing to go back to Mandos tugged at my heart, somehow. It must feel like a mother's womb; somewhere safest from all the hurts of the world.

I think you mentioned Finrod's blood-trance before this, but never about when. The exact time surprised me, and the victim of his episode too. So Celeborn was a warrior too after all? Hmm.

The grim, hasty procession through those packed streets must create quite a spectacle. Words of it might have spread everywhere even when Finrod was trying to call Edrahil back. Wow. This really complicated matters... A delicious treat, my evil part would say. LOL But now I have to go back to my neglected writing... See you later, then; when I have time again, which is hopefully pretty soon.

Author Reply: Generally, Elves sleep with their eyes open unless they are suffering injury or extreme weariness (physical or spiritual).

I'm glad you liked this method of retrieval rather than having the Valar intervene. Some Elves, like Finrod and Glorfindel, are beginning to learn that they have skills that are almost Valar-like in their scope if not in their power. Edrahil had passed out of the blood-trance (and yes, you may borrow it if you wish *grin*) and then realized what he had done or almost did and that's when his fëa fled.

I look forward to your comments on subsequent chapters whenever you get the chance. Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to review. I greatly appreciate it.

Atar Fiondil! Oh, these reviews are *incredibly* late...I'm sorry! I haven't reviewed in over a month...first I had to get home from England, then I got accepted into Everest College. *grin* It's been a very busy time for me. Well, now I'll catch up.

I LOVE the way Finrod finds and comforts Edrahil here. It's rather funny (well, I'm sure you know what I mean) to think of Celeborn (and Galadriel's) reaction to Finrod thinking poor Cel was an Orc. I'm so glad they're both all right now, though! *hugs Edrahil and Finda*

Tye-melin, atar indonyo!

Author Reply: Hi Kaylee. Congrats on getting accepted into Everest College. Well done! I am glad you liked how Finrod comforts Edrahil. At least Edrahil knows he is in good company when it comes to attacking people while suffering the blood trance. *grin*

I really wanted to give edrahil a hug there.
Small wonder he tried to flee to Mandos thinking he had killed Finrod. For someone so recently reborn, Mandos probably seems a lot safer than Lorien too.

`Odd, I don´t feel dead´ *sniggers* Another favourite line ;)

Greetings, Thalanee

Author Reply: Which is why he tried to flee to Mandos. He still thinks of it as "home".

Glad you liked Finrod´s line. Coming from him, he would know better than most what it feels like to be dead. *grin*

Hi Fiondil,

What a lot to experience in one day. Hopefully Edrahil will be back on his feet soon, although knowing how Glorfindel's similar experiences affected him, it might take awhile.

Under the circumstances, I can't see how Námo could act other than as he did, and he was...wonderful! Lucky Edrahil to have one such as this meet and comfort him. And he has some friends who will help him now. Wonder if Glorfindel may be of special help in his recovery?

Yes, that was quite an eye-opener about Finrod and Celeborn!

As always, can't wait for more.
Thanks Fiondil.

Joanne

Author Reply: We will see n the next chapter how Edrahil recovers from his ordeal. I am glad you think Namo acted appropriately. Now you know why Finrod was reluctant to talk about his own experience of the blood trance given who he ended up attacking. *grin* At least, he was able to help Edrahil put the experience into perspective with this anecdote from his own life.

Seems the Valar have finally found a way to hand another job over to the Firstborn ;) Had really expected Námo or another of the Valar to turn up and was a bit surprised that the job was left to Finrod. But he did very well – I'm impressed, even if Námo was complaining that it was taking him so long. For Finrod it was the first try, after all.

Poor Edrahil. So this slipping of his leash (agree with Glorfindel on that expression!) was caused by coming out of his blood-trance long enough to realise what had happened and believing he had killed Finrod? No wonder his fëa slipped away!

Oh, Finrod attacked his later brother-in-law when he himself experienced the blood-trance? Nice spicy detail :D

Anyway, I'm glad they're back, though it seems that rescue mission was a bit much for Finrod.

And now I am wondering what the Tol Eressëans will say about that incident. You know, I'm getting the feeling that they will talk about this Progress for many years, considering all that is happening! And we're still at the very beginning!

Author Reply: As an apprentice to both Irmo and Namo, Finrod needs to learn to do certain things as part of his new role as a Guardian of Arda and this is one of them, being able to search for those who are lost to themselves for whatever reason. It is, of course, similar to the healing ability that Aragorn has when he calls Faramir, Eowyn and Merry from death.

Yes, the Progress is just beginning. It remains to be seen how it all ends.

And the lost is found once more, reassured and at one with his earthly lord, and able to rest properly. At least Finrod had others there to catch him when he collapsed.

Author Reply: Very true, Larner, on all accounts.

Oops, I nearly killed my brother in law! That must have startled everyone around him.

Author Reply: Probably it did and I am sure Galadriel was not amused. *grin* Luckily it turned out well in the end.

No longer do the Valar come and do all of the work for Finrod and Glorfindel... they have to do things themselves now. Finrod is very bold and willing to try things like that. He would ask for help if he needed it, or if it didn't work! I hope that Edrahil is able to truly forgive himself, but I'm sure the others will help him with that. I wonder what all of this is going to do to the people of the town and how they view them... I'm sure I'll find out! :)

Author Reply: Yes, Radbooks. The Valar are not going to jump in and save the day all the time. It is time for Finrod and Glorfindel and all the rest to do things for themselves and not rely on the Valar all the time. That is especially true for the Reborn. I am sure the others will not allow Edrahil to wallow in self-pity. As for the townspeople and what they think, that remains to be seen.

So Edrahil did bang on Mandos' gates - though fortunately Námo didn't seem that peeved to see him. More irritated with the fact that it took Finrod that long to fetch him back ;-)

Author Reply: I am sure that much of Namo´s irritation was an act, and he would have shown up at the inn and given Finrod explicit instructions if he had felt it necessarz. *grin*

Ah, so Edrahil went to the only place he felt safe, Mandos. Makes sense, since most reborn seem to want to go back at one time or another!
I still think all reborn should come with a guide on their care and feeding! Maybe Arafinwe and his lady should write one!
More please,
Lynda

Author Reply: More than likely, Finrod´s parents are contemplating doing just that! *lol* I know many parents of newborns wish the same thing.
