Holding Back the Flood  by shirebound 21 Review(s)

Gimli and Legolas' dislike for each other and barely-disguised sniping is so cute, since they become such fast friends later on. I'm really enjoying this - but very nervous about them being in that cave...

Author Reply: Thank you. I really wanted to write an 'action' story before Legolas and Gimli were friends, since it would be so interesting to trap them together and force them to work together.

Wonderful characterisation, especially of Legolas - makes him a lot more interesting than I normally find him! I like the idea of him re-visiting a tree he last saw as a baby. ('My, how you've grown, and as like your old dad as one acorn to another.')

Author Reply: Thank you! I learn so much about the characters by writing about them. And that tree might end up playing a part later in the story... haven't quite figured it out yet...

Ah, nice chapter... I liked the interplay between all the characters but especially Sam's thoughts on Elves. "Elves were a marvel; their faces were lit with more than sunlight, it seemed, and they had lived through thousands of years of history." I like that description of them.

Author Reply: Thank you. I really enjoy imagining how hobbits view others (and how others view hobbits, of course). :)

You really do write an Elf's POV so beautifully. I love the beginning of this chapter as Legolas communes with the tree. I came away from this chapter feeling that I have a better understanding of the antipathy between Legolas and Gimli and why it existed at first. Beautifully done! And eeps, that cave opening!!

Author Reply: Oh, thank you! One of the things I hope to bring out in this story is that these two only *think* they have nothing in common. But that's not necessarily the case.

Hee, you've caught the Legolas-Gimli war perfectly here. And I have a feeling that by the story's end, those two will probably have learned to respect each other.

As usual, you capture the hobbits perfectly. :)

Author Reply: Thank you, Lily. It's fun to write a feud, especially knowing how it eventually turns out.

Hobbits... *loves*

I enjoyed seeing Gimli and Legolas and their own responses to the world about them. This is a lovely beginning to a friendship that will take them in the end to Fangorn and the Glittering Caves. You've done it again, coaxing out threads of a story and weaving more into a richer tapestry. Thank you.

Author Reply: What a lovely thing to say! The Professor's 'threads' are so rich and vibrant, it's a real pleasure to imagine new tapestries.

It is taking Gimly and Legolas a while to warm up to each other. Their bickering is amusing, tough. I agree that if anyone can get them together it will be Sam. I'm looking foward to reading more.

Author Reply: Thank you, Althea. Sam, Legolas, and Gimli are a fun 'trio' to write.

Note to Frodo, don't go poking around in caves, they have bats, rats and are very dark. Would be better to tramp over some nice flowery meadows and maybe a lake for a swim. NO Caves!!

Author Reply: He has to learn that lesson the hard way, I'm afraid. But at least you tried to warn him!

YAY! I got to read a little today and what do I find but a lovely chappie from my favorite hobbit!

Author Reply: Awwww, thanks. Your long-awaited angst is coming soon!

LOL Looks like Gimli and Legolas are going to make things amusing for the hobbits on this outting. I like looking back at this part of their relationship 'before' they became friends.

Author Reply: I'm enjoying it, too. Since we know what life-friends they're going to be, it's fun to "remember when".
