Estel Counts  by Larner 7 Review(s)

Bilbo's handwriting may not be as smooth and fluid as an Elve's, but I'm sure Estel will manage it. What a lovely gift.

Author Reply: I've written that book into other tales--I had to show how the child Estel got it, I found!

Good old Bilbo! His presents are always very thoughtful!

And this special present will go a long way with Estel before it is bestowed upon another little boy - if I remember right!

Author Reply: I am certain that this volume will one day become a favorite for Aragorn's children, even as the second copy will delight Frodo and Sam and then Sam's progeny, and the one Frodo makes for Bilbo becomes a favorite for Faramir and his descendants, entertaining Hurin's eventual wife along the way. There will be a few copies of it before it's through, after all. I think even Ruvemir gets a copy illustrated by Frodo eventually, IIRC, courtesy of Merry.

Heh! Not as elegant as Elrond I guess! But Estel will get to know Bilbo's writing fairly well in later years. He managed to decipher the poem for the hall of Fire after all. Or perhaps the reason that he didn't add anything except a green stone was that he couldn't read it well enough to dare to comment!

Author Reply: That he did! Getting the book of tales at this time in his life helped prepare him for Bilbo's writing later when the Hobbit became a resident of Rivendell, I suppose. And you have me giggling! Heh!

Thoughtful of Bilbo! I like that he's such an uncle figure to Estel.

Author Reply: I suspect that Bilbo was intrigued by what he saw of young Estel, and wanted to give him some pleasure.

Oh, it's THE book!!!!!! I love it! It's so very sweet of Bilbo to send it for Estel. :-) Hopefully there will be more told of it...or at least, hopefully there will be more told of "Or Perchance"? Please?

Author Reply: Yes, it's THE book. It may well appear again in "Or Perchance," although its final disposition is written in "A Treasure Returned." I suspect that Bilbo tended to have a soft spot in his heart for what he saw as intelligent children.

What a sweet child... I wonder what they came up with to send as a thank you!

Author Reply: Yes, indeed a sweet child. As for how he tried to show his appreciation--am not certain of that as yet. Thanks, Cairistiona.

It's fun to be 'counting' along with Estel. And a book from the Shire, what a special gift! His introduction to hobbits and their ways is very gentle and heartwarming.

Author Reply: I've written about the book in "A Treasure Returned" and "Or Perchance, when the Last Little Star." So, I thought I'd write of its first gifting to Estel. Yes, a lovely introduction to Shire life!
