Ah! What a quandry to come back to--the best waistcoat that no longer fits. And what to do with it now?

And love that final question--which is at fault as to the fact it no longer fits? Has his own growth in the end made him as unfit for the Shire as the waistcoat is for him to wear it?

Aww...that was sweet. And very Pippish as well.

Especially this line:
Unlike several hobbits of his acquaintance, Pippin understood that part of the importance of dressing up was having a proper occasion for it.

I can see Pippin having a sentimental attachment to items of clothing, less for what those items are than what they represent.

And of course, the main reason he cherished this one is found in your first sentence...
