Elf Academy Part Deux  by Fiondil 20 Review(s)
TindomielReviewed Chapter: 15 on 1/26/2013
Mae Govannen Lord Fiondil
I find myself greatly enjoying this tale, mellon nin, but I must regretfully inform you that I have discovered an error in thy scribing. You have made reference to the three Lord children, yet I understood there were four- Adam, Rachel, Hannah and young Caleb. Please forgive me if the error is mine. I look forward to reading the remainder of this epic tale, and also hope to see the third part of these comrades' adventures as they prepare for the coming Darkness. However, Aure entuluva, by the will of the One!
Namarie, Hir nin
Tindomiel of Aewellond

Author Reply: Thank you for pointing out the error, Tindomiel. As often as I've read this chapter, I can't believe I didn't notice the discrepancy earlier. At any rate, I'm glad you are enjoying the tale and when you finish with this one don't forget to read "Christmas at Edhellond", which continues the Elf Academy story and is a bridging story between this one and Elf Academy 3 which will hopefully be written later in the year if the Muse cooperates. Until then... namárië.

if Alex is not coming around now then I do not understand him. How many hints does he need? Fantasy book with pointed-ears people looking like the academy staff, Lord Namo rescuing him? I would rethink my way certainly. `Do you want to survive?`- a really interesting question. Thank you for a creepy, interesting, stunning chapter. Lai

Author Reply: Alex is getting a wake-up call here, that's for sure, with all the hints. We'll see how he deals with the information he has received as well as what he learns now. And Námo is very good at asking interesting questions. *grin* I'm glad you foudn the chapter creepy as well as stunning. Thanks for letting me, Lai. I appreciate it.

That's a wonderful book Daeron made for Caleb. It's really lovely to which lengths the Elves go to help Nicole and her children. Though it may not be the best one to read around Alex, but then, maybe it gives him a hint. And it made me giggle to imagine how irritated Caleb was about that stupid question why they have pointed ears :D

Uh. The Winterdark Tarn Trail? Why do I get the feeling that wasn't Zach's best idea? Alex does react strongly to it, and they have the kids with them ...

Oh no! You can't have poor little Caleb fall into the tarn! Though it was good to see that Alex immediately jumped after him. Trained killer or not, he's a good guy, I think.

So Alex more or less died and met Lord Námo? It seems even the Valar want to turn him to the right path and get him away from the Agency. Or at least that is how I understand it.

Again, I am glad the Maiar are around, making sure no one is harmed. Without them, this little trip would have ended in such a tragedy!

Author Reply: Námo's little chat with Artemus/Alex should go a long way towards pointing him in the right direction, though it's not going to happen overnight, as you will see. And the Valar are keeping a closer watch on things than usual simply because of Alex's involvement. He is very dangerous and attracts danger, so it's wise of the Valar to have the Maiar on hand at all times.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, Kitty. It's much appreciated

Yes!!! I LOVE the Winterdark Tarn Trail... it is my favorite part of the academy stories--although, I have a sneaking suspicion it is not Artemus' favorite place. Thank you for writing such quality stories and updating them consistently. (Even though I always feel like I'm eagerly liking the crumbs of each new plot tidbit.)

My apologies for not reviewing earlier. I am rather cautious when it comes to becoming more active in online communities, but I love all of your stories and I just couldn't keep quiet forever.

Thank you for writing,
Noruinivel

Author Reply: Hello, Noruinviel. I think a lot of people like the Winterdark Tarn Trail but you're right that it's not Artemus' favorite vacation spot. *grin* I'm glad you decided to leave a review and let me know how much you are enjoying my stories, espeically this one. I really appreciate it and I hope I see more reviews from you whenever you decide to leave one.

Atto! Alex almost drowned! And Lord Namo, and Maranwe and...hmmm, Erunaro and Manveru and Tiutalion were all there! Unless it was Nyereser...*guessing favorite Maiar besides Marillien, Eonwe, Ilmare, Arien, Tilion, Salmar, Uinen, Osse, Fionwe, Melyanna, Ingil, Aiwendil and Olorin...oh and the Ithryn Luin...I think they're all probably lots busy* ;-) What happens now? Is Caleb ok? What will Nicole say? Oh, by the way, her boyfriend isn't a Maia, is he?

Tye-melin!

Kaylee

Author Reply: Hi Kaylee. LOL! That's a lot of favorite Maiar. We'll find out in the next chapter how everyone is. And no, Nicole's boyfriend isn't a Maia, just a very nice Mortal. We'll meet him briefly in a later chapter.

Thanks for reading and reviewing. Tye-melin.

Poor Alex. It's one shock after another. Will he ever be able to return to spying? Lord Nemo really threw him for a loop. And then there's the tarn. Could it contain a watcher in the water?

(Where do you come up with all the names for the elves, other than the ones from Tolkien's works?)

Author Reply: Hi Tari. Yes, Alex is suffering from shock on many fronts. We'll see how he handles it over the next several chapters (and there are more shocks to come). I have no idea what lies within the tarn, only that waking it is not a good idea. As for the Elvish names... a good understanding of Sindarin and Quenya word/name formation really helps. *grin* Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it very much.

I think I am going to etablish a support group for all your readers who are anxiously awaiting the next update!

I am a little further along than Harrowcat, having got to where Allassiel is learning to be the King of Nogothrond's Squire!

Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: LOL! I'm sure you'll have lots of company, Lynda.

Another day, a near-Namo experience, and even more for Alex to think about...just when I think things can't get any more interesting, they do. *grin* I loved the way you handled Alex's feelings on the hike, as well as the details like the banter between Zach and the kids and Caleb's book. I may have said this before, but I really like how Caleb speaks Sindarin. His innocent knowledge of the elves is quite the contrast to Alex's bewilderment and attempts to make sense out of the situation. I also really liked how the hikers just mysteriously appeared to rescue Alex, knowing exactly what to do. I wonder if Zach knew who they really were.

By the way, I'm sorry if my comment about the Maia scents in the last chapter came across as rude or mocking... I was not aware that it was canonical and I do think that is a neat idea, but for some reason it struck me as rather odd/funny at the time.

Author Reply: Hi Lisbeth. I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter, especially the contrast between Caleb's innocent knowledge of the Elves and Alex's obvious confusion and attempts to make sense of it all. I suspect Zach suspects that the hikers weren't really hikers. He's been around the Elves enough to realize that.

As for the comment about the scents, I didn't take offense. I thought the image of the Elves sniffing the air rather funn myself. But yes, the idea that the Maiar exude flowery scents is canonical, although you're not going to find it mentioned in the Silmarillion or the Lord of the Rings. This comes from Tolkien's later writings which are slowly but surely being published.

Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it.

You meant "downfall" quite literally in your answer to my last review. I don't think anyone will get Alex to ever go near that Tarn again. What will he do now? The clues about the identity of the elves are adding up. How long can he pretend not to put two and two together. The encounter with Namo will also give him something to think about.

Author Reply: *Grin* We'll see what Alex does next and the aftereffects of his experience at the tarn over the several chapters. He does indeed have much to think on. Thanks for commenting, obsidianj. I appreciate it very much.

LarnerReviewed Chapter: 15 on 3/6/2012
Ooh! Namo and his Maiar are putting a hand into the mix now, are they? Alex/Artemus now has some serious thinking to do as to what he wants to do with what remains of his life. The Valar obviously have reason to see him as important, important enough to be offered the choice to live and be rescued from his life of intrigue to do what is necessary to protect this creation, and he's beginning to realize that the Elves are--Elves.

And the tarn is able to shift its depth for its own purposes, apparently. Verrryyyy interesting!

Author Reply: Indeed they have, Larner, and we'll see how Alex deals with this development once he's recovered.

Thanks for taking the time to read and review. I appreciate it.
