It took me a looooong time to find this and its subsequent chapters. Not sure why I missed it when originally posted though I've been away from the site as a whole for quite some time. I'll look forward to catching up to where you now are. Thanks as always for your hard work on this. Author Reply: Thank you for you kind words. I was getting the feeling that nobody is interested in my poor Dwarves anymore. You just made my day. :) I've been away from the site for a while as well, being more active in my other fandoms (I definitely have too many of those), but I intend to return to this story - and to The Book of Mazarbul - as soon as my Tolkien muse decides to cooperate.

Once in a while I come back to this and am amazed all over again by the level of detail and the wonderful plot. It's really amazing and I like it SO much better than the movies. (Blech!) Please continue it someday? Author Reply: I am ashamed that I left you waiting for so much. The sad truth is, my Tolkien muse is still kind in a shock from the loss of Fiondil - I wrote lots of stuff in my other fandoms, but nothing in the Ardaverse since his departure. I promise I'll make an effort to continue the story. It is good to find a kindred spirit who thinks similarly about the films as I do. Thanks for the encouragement, I really appreciate it.

Thank you so much! Will you continue this story soon? I found it very well written and enjoyed it very much. Author Reply: Thank you! I definitely intend to continue, as soon as I manage to combine the different text versions into a functioning plot in my head. :)

Oh, so good to hear from you again after all this time! A wonderful marriage of book- and movie-verse here. The dialogue is well mixed together, I must say. And we grow closer to the quest itself at last! Author Reply: Thanks, Larner! This was an incredibly hard chapter to write, because I did not want to simply insert big chunks of the book itself, for obvious reasons, so I agonized about the question what to add or what to leave out forever. Also, work-related stress is not the right mindset for writing Tolkienfic.

Interesting combination of the two canons with your own ideas. I'm looking forward to the moment Bifur is hit by the longing.

Nice to get a good introduction to the group who will be accompanied by Bilbo. I disapprove of the PJ version of Balin myself, and wish he'd been presented as more royal in nature. I liked him as a person--he just wasn't proper to the one who would claim the rule of Khazad-dum is all. Author Reply: Yes, he's more the children's book version. Which would be all right per se, weren't Thorin and Dwalin not from a completely different category. The WETA book to "The Hobbit" shows a much earlier concept of Balin, where he's magnificent and dignified and wonderful. I used that picture as a template.

Good to see an update on this story. Its definitely a different take on the quest of the Lone Mountain. Looking forward to more of it as well as to your Rohan based story. Thanks as always for your hard work on your writing. Author Reply: The trick is to stay as true to canon as possible and yet make a different story out of it. It's not easy, and sometimes I manage to maneuvre myself into a croner from where it's hard to get out again. But I'm trying. *g* Thanks for reading and reviewing. You make my day every time.

Oh, I love the politics of the decisions as to who goes and who does not. And several of us have agreed that it was Gimli's mother who forbade his going, too, I've noted. And Bifur needs to guard her heart? Hmmm! Author Reply: Well, it's called a romance for a reason. *g*

When one has the benefit of the advice of Tharkun, one would be a fool to ignore it. And they'd best listen when Bifur speaks of her own experience with Hobbits. Gandalf's foreknowledge of their true needs make it sound as if he's been to see Galadriel lately. Author Reply: Well, he's a wizard. They come and go as they please, right, ;)

This healing sounds hopeful, at least. Now, to see the process completed.
