Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 14 Review(s)
KittyReviewed Chapter: 45 on 6/24/2014
*rolls eyes* Honestly, the twins and Serindë are way too old to be treated like that. And no one forced Glorfindel to go to Fairbanks, the others could have gone without him, so I am not so happy that Vorondur is blaming them for that, too.

Hm, doesn't sound as if things have really calmed down; it might be just the quiet before the next storm. Poor Finrod and the other leaders won't be too happy to have still to deal with it, I suspect. At that rate, any trouble the twins might cause is going to seem harmless.

At least they seem to have a lead on where Glorfindel's ring is; it would be good if he got it back soon.

*ROFL* Now that's the Glorfindel we know and love, bossing even a Maia around and sending him out to send the other Elves home!

Oh well, at least he made his peace with Helyanwë. I was glad he didn't blame only himself but made clear that she really meant what she said and why she was so wrong. Sure, he reacted wrong, but I thought what she said was pretty tactless. (Can you tell that I don't feel all charitable right now?)

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. Well, Ron's in parental mode and he does have a point: as angry as the Twins might have been they should have been more considerate of others and not have made them worried as they did. Glorfindel shouldn't have left the hospital as he did and he shouldn't have had to make such an arduous trip in his weakened condition. Had he been mortal, he probably wouldn't have survived the trip at all.

As for the rest, well, things are coming to a head and many issues are being resolved now that Glorfindel is back to give them all grief. *grin*

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

And a long drive to Wiseman it was....

Glorfindel asking for some pain medicine on his own, without being forced, is a sure sign he still has a way to go.

So Finrod had to ask for a couple of Maiar? I'm pretty sure Námo would be more than willing to give them, considering the alternative.

It's a good thing Glorfindel has been brought up to date with was going on in Wiseman, or else he would have been in for a surprise when he came home!

A long road it was too for the Twins and Sarah. I think the Twins will better stay out of the way of Ron for a while after this. Thinking of this, I really wonder how they will react when they hear of Ron's own 'events' with Mir and Earnest!

So, back in Wiseman...

After the monopoly marathon, we now get the Star Wars marathon. All the Wiseman elves moving out is an obvious sign the tension at home was becoming too much for them too. Stan's ‘You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here’ speech should have been an interesting one.

Glorfindel's talk with Fionwë was just precious! All of it.

So Helyanwë was at the point of fading. You'd almost say it runs in the family....I hope her talk with Glorfindel did her some good, and in her current situation, it was a good thing he took the blame for it,but let not forget in the in she was the final straw to him...

Finrod declaring Glorfindel his equal in some kind of ceremony might actually the thing that would work for a good deal of the Valinor elves and that's the group that needs to get the message. Although I'm pretty sure the Wiseman elves will pretty much laugh about it and the Twins won't stop teasing him about it for the next two centuries!

So, let's see how Glorfindel deal's with Mir and Earnest next, and I suppose by the time he's done with them our Maia sheepdog might have rounded up the Wiseman elves...

Author Reply: Yes, a very long drive for many. *grin*

I doubt that a ceremony whereby Finrod declares Glorfindel his equal would do any real good. As you point out, the Wiseman Elves would just laugh, especially the Twins, and it might ultimately be counterproductive.

We'll see in the next chapter how things are resolved (or not).

Thanks for reviewing, FV_Whisper. I appreciate it.

That was a long ride home. When Glorfindel took two pain pills, I knew he was in bad shape. His talk with Helyanwe was a beginning, but I don't think everything is solved. Loved the interaction with Fionwe. Maybe this little demonstration showed Helyanwe more than anything that Glorfindel is not some nobody. Now to see how Glorfindel can mend fences with Ernie and Mir.

Author Reply: Hi obsidian j. A very long ride for everyone. And, no, not everything between Glorfindel and Helyanwë as been resolved, but at least they're talking to one another and that's the important thing. I think you're right that seeing the interaction between Glorfindel and Fionwë should help Helyanwë to realize that Glorfindel is indeed not some nobody, but somebody even the Maiar obey. I suspect that Fionwë did Glorfindel's bidding to help show this to her. As for Ernie and Mir... that remains to be seen. Thanks for leaving a comment. I very much appreciate it.

LaerReviewed Chapter: 45 on 6/2/2014
Mir and Ernie will have some apologies to met out to Loren. As long as it isn't followed with "those darn kids" I am sure it will be excepted. As for Helyanwe..maybe she will be ok after all. ;) Had to chuckle over him "stealing" her toast. That shows he still thinks of her as his "love'

Glad that Loren told the truth. It was his own fault for letting himself become so angry over words. She needed to say those words so that she could understand just how wrong they were. Now for the rest of the crew ;)

Author Reply: We'll see how the conversation between Glorfindel, Mir and Ernie goes. And I really didn't think of Glorfindel "stealing" Helyanwë's toast as a sign that he still thinks of her as his "love", but you're probably on to something there.

And the truth, however painful, is preferable to the alternative and Glorfindel is mature enough to recognize this in himself and others. And I would expect nothing less from him anyway.

As for the rest of the crew... we'll see about that in the next chapter as well.

Thanks for reviewing, Laer. I appreciate it very much.

Well, one gentle confrontation done with and another about to begin. Love the Lurch reference, of course. Glad Fionwe is cooperating. Now--to get everyone cooperating rather than competing. But the Valinorian Elves are facing distinct culture shock, of course. Best put their expectations behind them so they can accept things as they come.

Author Reply: I'm sure Glorfindel will indeed be gentle with Vardamir and Eärnur. I couldn't resist the Lurch reference. As for everyone cooperating, that remains to be seen. Thanks for reviewing, Larner. It's appreciated.

It definitely sounds like there is a lot of tension in the air among the Elves - and all the Wiseman Elves wanting to stay anywhere but at Edhellond is just a symptom. I sniggered a bit at the mention of a Star Wars marathon - and also thought of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEcjgJSqSRU

I guess Valandur has found his perch already with the Quenya classes. So do you think ha will make that his carreer, and get a certification to be a "real" teacher?

The interplay between Glorfindel and Fionwë was high comedy (and I also LOVED Daeron's little remark!) but undoubtedly also an eye-opener for Helyanwë and Melyanna. They aren't exactly used to seeing Elves give orders to a Maia - and having them obeyed! But then Glorfindel is one half of a certain Dynamic Duo that once upon a time had even the Valar hopping!

To finish: More Star Wars fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgAlQuqzl8o

Author Reply: Hi Sunny. Thanks for the links.

Valandur may well go for his teaching certification or maybe Daeron will just whip one up for him. *grin* I'm sure he'll enjoy teaching at the college someday.

It was certainly an eye-opener for the ellith the way Glorfindel and Fionwë interacted. Daeron, of course, was just amused but it all. Glorfindel is definitely in rare form here, which means he fast recovering.

Thanks for leaving a comment. I appreciate it very much.

Glad to see they're going to work everything out. Although, I must say, you write interpersonal tension really well. Usually that bugs me, but you are good enough it doesn't.

Oh, and being most of the way through Elf, Interrupted, I enjoyed the spoilers about Sador's family.

~Eruherdiriel

Author Reply: Hi Eruherderiel. I'm glad to hear that I write interpersonal tension well. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it. And you're lucky to not have to wait forever to learn about Sador's family like everyone else. *grin* Thanks for reading and reviewing!

p.s. Just have to add that I bless the little glossary sections at the end of your chapters.

Author Reply: You're welcome. I know not everyone is conversant with either Sindarin or Quenya or even with certain real-world languages, or even with the historical and cultural notes that I also occasionally include, so I try to accommodate everyone and hope I'm not insulting anyone else's intelligence with them.

Yikes! Car rides and captive audiences.

Helyanwë doesn't seem completely convinced but at least she's eating something. (I love Glorfindel snitching her toast without realising...)

Things are definitely in a mess. Love the image of a Maia rounding up strays, though my mental image is more of a rope-wielding cowboy than a shepherd. (Of course, that would hardly be Middle-earthian. OTOH, surely there must have been some Elves in the Wild, Wild West... Who was that masked man?)

Sorry, am definitely punchy today. But thank you for helping me get started on this more-difficult-than-usual Monday. (Not circumstances. More that my body is in rebellion today after a very full weekend.)

Author Reply: Hi Lindelea. That's the danger of car rides: nowhere to escape. *grin*

Things are definitely a mess and we'll see how Glorfindel handles it in the next chapter.

Thanks for reviewing and I hope you recover quickly from your weekend.

First of all - I think I squeaked like a dolphin at finally finding out what happened to Sador's sister! That made me so happy. Thank you sooo much for including that little bit of continuity, an answer to a story several years old now!

Yikes, though, at Helyanwë fading. I'm glad she and Glorfindel are trying to put things to rights, but - even though I'm sure they had their reasons, it makes one wonder just *what* those reasons were for the Valar letting some of these folks come over on the first trip. It must be hard for everybody but some of them seem particularly sensitive to it...

You have to wonder just *what* was said in that car between the Twins, Serindë and Daddy Vorondur! But y'know, the guy did lose his sons, I forget that sometimes, and it makes sense he'd be a bit mother-hennish toward his daughter. I'm glad they (apparently) got it worked out.

Looks like the embroidery was the Wiseman folks' version of Monopoly. Good to see the Amigos + Nell decided (or were chased) into going off to school. I remember from my own college days it can be a real relief to get away from family troubles at home and escape to a nice little shoebox of a dorm room.

Ha @ Glorfindel ordering Fionwë around, and double-ha @ Fionwë actually doing it! Maybe he was a bit bored. Another off-screen conversation to wonder about: putting the "fear of the Valar" in the runaways!

Great chapter, lots of things coming together, and some others falling apart a little in very entertaining ways. Thanks for the update and have a beautiful week!
-Kevana

Author Reply: Hi Kevana. I know lots of people have wondered about the fate of Sador's parents and sister and it's nice to be able to reveal it here.

I'm sure the car conversation was very one-sided with Ron doing most of the talking and the others wishing they were dead or at least not in that car with him. *grin*

We'll hear something about Fionwë's 'shepherding' in the next chapter.

Thanks for reviewing. Have a great week yourself!
