Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 17 Review(s)

Atya,

"When in Rome" indeed...I think that's only polite really. The rendition of 'My Fair Lady' made me giggle. I remember my friend Jeff singing it in a performance at our high school but that was ages ago so I don't remember it well. (Well, not *ages*, but over ten years, so...)

Edhellond, Inc.? Interesting idea...O.o I wonder how that will work out.

Dear God, that wedding china from Angband. :P I swear, I hope whoever does the designs has MUCH better sense this time around. Haha.

Sorry for playing catch-up (again), but it's been a busy couple weeks...any fun Thanksgiving plans?

Hugs,

Kaylee

Author Reply: Hi Kaylee. I have no idea if Edhellond, Inc. could actually work. I'll have to check on it. Anyway, I'm sure the people doing Roy and Sarah's wedding have a whole lot more sense than Almáriel. *grin*

Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

Having their own car would be a necessity for these who move out of Edhellond, but otherwise, some sort of car-sharing would make more sense, yes. I doubt they would need 40 cars at the same time, after all. The corporation idea might be a way to go about it, but I don't know enough about it, and even less so under US laws.

Depending on how big the neighbouring empty lot is, maybe they could consider a second house, so Edhellond isn't so crowded, particularly in case more Elves come from Valinor?

Who knows when they need a blood donor or something like that, so finding a way to type their blood is a good idea. At least if they can do it safely, without risk of exposure. As for genetic research, the Elves never had the same need for it as we do. Not when so many are around who even remember Cuiviénen. Some months ago, I've been reading a book about paleogenetics, it's an interesting topic, that is for sure, and it's amazing what you can find out that way.

Looks like the brothers need reinforcements before facing their parents and telling them certain facts, lol. At least then we don't have to wait until the actual wedding to meet Tristan and Iseult, which only can be a good thing, as I am rather curious by now.

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. Building a house next door might not be a bad idea. It certainly is worth considering. Making it into a car park might violate zoning laws, but another house with plenty of garage space would not.

You're right that when you can go to those who woke at Cuiviénen, genetic research isn't that big a need unless, as Námo insists, the Reborn are exhibiting traits that the Once-born are not and that may be an evolutionary matter. At any rate, they do need to come up with some means of blood typing for emergencies.

We'll see in the next chapter how the meeting with Tristan and Iseult goes when they meet heroes out of legends. *grin*

Thanks for reviewing. It's much appreciated.

When you start talking about building a car park, you know the crowding is getting bad, and they are only going to get more crowded when the next group comes in from Valinor. Maybe they can build on to Edhellond, but the idea of a farm would be good too. Edhellond Inc.! If they are getting politically and educationally active, no reason they can't get more active in business too.

The idea of those blood samples in the wrong hands is scary...I am surprised they even had to go through with that, as they certainly can't get any diseases, but then again I guess they are trying to do it by the book and there's no real harm in it either as long as Kyle is careful.

Love the discussion about blood typing, they can't be too terribly dissimilar from Mortals or the two could never have interbred and had fertile offspring, but when you get into all the antibodies and such it can get really complicated. They wouldn't even have to be all that different, just a few small differences can pose problems from what I understand.

I don't think the Elves would have to look into their genetics to know their relations, technically speaking they could reasonably expect to trace their ancestors back to the first Elves and actually go visit them! How wild is that? Or at least, they could visit them after any dead family members get released from Mandos that is, LOL.

Glorfindel never misses a chance to poke fun at Finrod's early "glory days" as a Reborn. It's so cute to see them playing with each other again! I have seen some fugly bridesmaid dresses in my time but thankfully have not actually been tempted to set any of them on fire.

Hmm, the brothers are nervous, that's odd..but maybe not, considering the news they have to break?

Bookstore Boy! I think that one's going to stick, hehe.

I spotted a typo - Glorfindel's name in the fourth paragraph from the end. I feel like I've spotted a rare bird in the wild, you and your betas are so good at catching things.

Author Reply: Hi Kevana. There are a lot of ways they can go. I don't think they can expand Edhellond. Their best bet would be for people to move out and buy their own houses the way Ron and Amroth and their wives did.

Dealing with blood samples are a little scary given what could happen if such samples got into the wrong hands, but they do need to get the blood typing down so that what happened to Glorfindel with his transfusion doesn't happen to anyone else. Something they will have to deal with in the future.

I think Bookstore Boy is here to stay, too, whatever Finrod says. *grin*

Thanks for pointing out the typo. I can't begin to tell you the number of ways I've spelt Glorfindel's name over the years... and Legolas' and Finrods and....

Thanks for your comments. They're much appreciated.

Hmmm. I still think there's going to be a really big reveal connected with the ap Hywels' arrival.

I'd not heard that form of the saying about being in Rome. Had me chuckling.

Watched the manner in which Beorn and the leaders of Laketown came to be designed and have been having quite a good time, gearing up for a few weeks from now. Should be a wonderful experience, in spite of the falderol about Angmar and his fellows having died and been resurrected by the Necromancer! Heh!

Author Reply: Oh, that particular expression has been around for as long as I remember, Larner. Perhaps it's an East Coast thing. ;)

Anyway, looking forward to the next Hobbit movie, myself. I'm actually surprised that there aren't any new Hobbit-based fan stories on the site. I was sure there would be some long before this. Whatever...

Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

So, the brother ap Hywel call in reinforcements before confronting their parents. They probably hope that their parents will be too distracted by meeting the great Finrod to get too upset about the wedding plans. The long drive to Fairbanks will give Finrod plenty of time to practice his driving.

Author Reply: Hi obsidianj. Yeah, reinforcements. We'll see how well that goes in the next chapter, but Finrod will certainly get lots of driving in. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Meant also to add I loved the song from My Fair Lady. That brought back a lot of memories.

Author Reply: I thought it was appropriate to the scene. Thanks.

Time is aflyin' and Elrohir and Serinde will soon be moving to their own place. What with cars and horses and possibly more Elves in the future, the Elves should be looking for a large farm or a series of houses in town that could be rented out to students at the Elf Academy and distributed to the others as they got their own jobs and gained the ability to live away from the Wiseman Elves.

Blood types is a very interesting topic and one to crop up in the future. I wonder how many blood types there are among the Elves? And I wonder if their plasma could be stored for emergencies. Kyle will be busy with the hematology it seems.

The ap Hywels are on their way. They don't know about the Wiseman Elves and seeing them there in the airport is likely to cause some kind of stir. I am curious as to who they are and what they will think about having their own kind in the world after all. Should be a very interesting coming chapters as the wedding comes up.

Great chapter overall. Looking forward to the next installment.

Author Reply: Hi rikki. Yes, time is aflýin' though it will actually be some time before we see the wedding itself. Lots to do beforehand. You're right that the Elves should look into buying a farm or several houses, perhaps even an entire apartment building. We'll have to see what they decide on eventually, but certainly they can't all continue living in Edhellond.

I would imagine that their plasma could be stored. There certainly is a lot to consider, particularly since no one really knows when the War will begin, but again, there are other types of emergencies where the plasma would come in handy, such as when Glorfindel was in surgery.

We'll see how the ap Hywel parents react to meeting the Wiseman Elves in the next couple of chapters. It should be an interesting experience for them all.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.

Ooooh, I'm excited to meet Gwyn and Gareth's parents. And about the wedding...I hope it won't have the same excitement as Finrod's did! But I guess we will just have to wait and see. I am also interested in seeing where the blood typing bit goes, and the corporation bit, and, well...just all of it. I'm also hoping we get to see a bit more Alex. The human input into these stories are always interesting.

Loving it all so far! Looking forward to the rest! Knowing you post Fridays and Mondays is the best...it gives me something to enjoy before my ten-hour work shift on Friday (I work until 5 am) and something to unwind with on Monday after the long weekend working.

Author Reply: Hi Tira. Everyone is eager to me Tristan and Iseult. I hope you like them when you do. They are a fun couple. As for the wedding, we'll just have to see and hope for the best. Getting incorporated can be a hassle, but it is doable, especially if they incorporate as a not-for-profit. They are, after all, engaging in an enterprise, almost a charitable one, if you think about it, giving up their own lives and plans to help prepare the people of Wiseman for the End of Days.

I'm glad this story helps you through your work schedule, before and after. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it very much.

Wow. What a fun chapter! Driving, buying property, blood typing, wedding plans...and you still had time to bring up past events! I can barely keep up. But I enjoy it so much. Thanks!
