Spring Awakenings  by daw the minstrel 20 Review(s)

I think perhaps the only way Eilian will be able to make himself acceptable to Solith and what's-her-name will be to join the Home Guard or, at the least, a
border patrol. I'm not too sure he would be willing to do that. I guess it will come down to where his greatest love lies. Celuwen's devotion is certainly evident by what she wrote to him, but Eilian's words to his father were revealing, and not in a good way. Now I wonder what trouble will find vacationing Legolas this time! Thanks, daw!

Author Reply: Poor Eilian. Thranduil certainly laid out the problems inherent here pretty clearly. We'll see what Eilian decides to do about it. He and Celuwen are pretty thoroughly in love and it's spring and he nearly died, so maybe he'll forget about warrior stuff for a while. Legolas has survived fire and dragon, so we'll see he does with flood. Next come plagues of locusts.

I sure am glad you cleared up that Legolas and Eilian are going to different settlements. My whole review was going to be based on how angry I was at all of them! Now mind you, I'm still miffed at Solith. He's such a jerk. If this bonding business comes about, then I think Thranduil needs to have a prayer meeting with the old goat. I know I'm prejudice, but Eilian is getting a bad rap, and Thranduil's not making it any easier. Of course, I'm not sure that Thranduil realizes it at this point. Are the elves of Solith's settlement deaf, dumb and blind? When are they going to wake up and smell the Darwinion? Solith cannot separate his personal feelings from what is best for his people and certainly not from what is best for his daughter. He's so deluded. Well, you certainly got my blood pumping this morning. Personally, I see this a sign of a well written story. You elicited emotion out of your readers! Namely me. grumble...grumble...

Poor Legolas. His opportunity to sleep in a real bed was short lived. He'll survive, and I suppose it could be looked on as an honor that his father trusts him enough to send him to the settlers. Of course, I imagine he would rather be honored after he had a little more time to relax.

Good chapter, daw. I look forward to seeing what happens. Give my love to Belowen. Tell him I underestand completely how hard it is to be healer to a houseful of irritating males. Karen

Author Reply: LOL. Eilian welcomes your indignation on his part, Karen. The idea of Thranduil and Solith making nice together at family gatherings amuses me vastly. Thranduil has had enough problems with Eilian over they years that he may not see his son's point very clearly, I'm afraid. And I think it is an honor that Thranduil trusts Legolas enough to do this. Gee. At this rate, he'll be ready to go to see Elrond!

Belowen thanks you for your sympathy and wants to share some herb recipes.

Oh I just knew there was too much happiness to last I had such high hopes for Eilian too.
Still Thrnaduil seems to know what he is doing so I will have to rely on his good judgement I just hope Eilina will as well
and Legolas just home and now seeing how his responsibilities to the realm are increasing I loved the way the normal everyday things he had missed while in the south gave him such pleasure and how Adar noticed it too

Author Reply: Eilian would have to rely on Thranduil's good judgment, because I'm not sure he has any of his own when it comes to Celuwen. And I think Legolas might have mixed feelings about being sent with the relief team. He's giving up his leave but it's got to be flattering to have his father ask him to do this.

Hard times indeed, both physically for everyone, and mentally for Legolas.
A big responsibility laid on him. Obviously Thranduil has noted his maturing.
Hopefully the elves in the settlement will realise that they are truly being given all that can be spared ....
Thank you.

Author Reply: Legolas is growing into Legolas of the Quest, I think, but this has to be stressful for him. His father is paying him quite a compliment, I think.

Settlement elves are unpredictable! So we'll see.

LeraReviewed Chapter: 2 on 3/17/2004
I'm so excited about this story. I can just tell it's going to be fun.

Good night, Eilien! I'm not sure about that wound. But no matter. He's going to see Celuwen. Can we call her Celly? Thranduil was wise to send Eilien out of the room while quesioning Legolas. Legolas was already being put on the spot, and it was easier to say what he had to say without Eilien present.

Everything Thranduil said made perfect sense to me. I also wanted to ask Eilien, "Did you hear anything he just said?!" Oh, Eilien. But it's ok, because his troublesome quirks make an exciting story.

That settlement! But Thranduil really does care for them. The advisors' concern for the children was touching. I liked hearing Thranduil be greatful for Ithilden's presence. He's lucky to have Ithilden. The whole realm is lucky to have Ithilden. And here's a little glimpse into the future: Legolas sent to give bad news but to show the king's sorry and does care. I'd like to see the scene where Thrandul decides to send Legolas to Imladris to share Gollum's escape. yuck. I noticed even though Eilien's conveniently going to that settlement, Thranduil didn't decide to send his condolences through him. Ah, well, Eilien had probably already left.

I was happy to see Annael. I was wondering how he was doing. With a grown daughter! That's so strange! They're really old. I mean the last time we saw Annael he was throwing snowballs with Legolas. Annael's really following in the family footsteps. I can't help but be a little worried at this. I think it's Annael who needs a keeper, just to ensure he stays around to see his grandchildren.

Ok, thank you as always for the update. Can't wait to read more. God bless and good night.

Author Reply: 'Celly'??? LOL. If I tell you how much I hate 'Leggy,' is that an answer?

Eilian may have heard what Thranduil said, but I'm not sure it made much of a dent. Or maybe it didn't make the kind of dent his father wanted it to make!

And it was only in reading reviews this morning that it dawned on me that I hadn't made it clear that Eilian and Legolas are going to different settlements. It was so clear to me (I even have them marked on a map), that I guess I assumed it was clear to everyone else too.

I had to stop myself from showing Annael's daughter as an elfling in this story, but when I counted up the years, she's definitely a grown up. Being an elf is so strange!

Boy, did Eilian put his little brother on the spot or what? And I have to agree with Thranduil - somehow, I can't see Celuwen sitting around the palace, waiting for Eilian to come home.

It's good to see Annael again. And I forgot to mention how interesting it was in Eilian's memories of the past to see that Annael has followed so closely in his father's footsteps.

It will be interesting to see how both sons deal with the diplomatic part of their visits. Eilian's temper is shorter, and he does have a genuine gripe about Celuwen's father. But Legolas can be proud - he could get a little touchy if the settlement believes that the food shortage is due to a lack of concern on the King's part.

Author Reply: Actually, I think it was Thranduil who put Legolas on the spot. At least he sent Eilian from the room, which must have made it easier for Legolas to tell the truth (or as much of it as he could).

It's hard to imagine how a marriage between Eilian and Celuwen would work, actually, and I've been thinking about it for a while now! Where *would* she live? What *would* she do?

I suspect that Legolas would be a better diplomat than Eilian would. Eilian has no patience whatever.

Poor Legolas! I feel so sorry for the tired warrior. Now he can't even sleep in his soft bed while on leave. And Beliond is in the woods, so who's going to watch out for our favorite youngest Thranduilion?

You have made a difficult time for the Mirkwood elves very believable by including so many small details related to their rationing and difficulties procuring food.

It sounds as though Legolas may be heading towards danger...and we're heading towards another exciting, wonderful story!

Author Reply: As I tell myself when weeks off from my job turn into some other kind of chore, at least it will be different! I think Thranduil will have learned to store more food long term, assuming that's possible without refrigeration. They must have been able to can stuff, although I suppose 'can' is the wrong word.

Thanks for the review, Naneth.

And I forgot to add that it's creepy seeing Annael with a full-grown forester of a daughter. I'm used to seeing your Legolas as a kid and it's weird seeing someone in his generation as a father. I guess that's a reminder that our favorite wood-elf is indeed grown-up.

Author Reply: I actually thought that too! I never showed her as an elfling. I think I have to do that some time. I'll bet Annael was a wonderful father and grandma must have liked having elflings around again.

JustafanReviewed Chapter: 2 on 3/17/2004
Oh, how lovely! I liked how Legolas stood up for his brother going to see Celuwen, even though he couldn't lie to his father about Eilian's injury. Poor Legolas, having to give up his leave. And how hard the decision must have been for Thranduil! It is his duty though, as royalty. Thanks so much for writing this story; I'm enjoying all of it immensely.

Author Reply: I'm glad you're enjoying it, Justafan. Yes, I think the burdens of being royal probably outweigh the benefits by a long shot for Wood elves. They would be happy with very simple lives, for the most part, if the times would allow it.

Thranduil's sons all stand up for one another when they can. It's part of what makes them appealing, I think.

PortiaReviewed Chapter: 2 on 3/17/2004
Aww, poor Legolas. No more vacation. I like how you have Thranduil dealing with the settlers by sending them his son to show that he's taking them seriously. I suspect that was probably the reason he sent Legolas to Rivendell, too--showing that the escape of Gollum was not due to willful neglect or anything. People so often fail to understand that, and think that Thranduil is a mean daddy who degrades his son to the level of an errand boy. Your Thranduil is of course lovable, if a bit aggravating.

Eilian's wound is, of course, more serious than he's pretending. Is that going to come back to bite him? Once again, your Thranduil is wonderfully real in the way he deals with Eilian and his stormy love life. (Celuwen seems a bit ornery and stubborn--how will she get along with Thranduil? I'm not sure I'd like being the Elvenking's daughter-in-law!)

And now I wonder how Legolas is going to deal with those settlers. Is he going to be riding with Eilian? I hope so--I love how those two interact. It will be nice to see Legolas do diplomatic stuff. I guess he had to have done some stuff like that in Mirkwood, since he responds pretty coolly to Aragorn's accusing tone manages to wangle Gimli's entrance into Lorien in FotR.

Author Reply: Ack! In my own head, it was so clear that Eilian and Legolas are going to *different* settlements. You mean readers can't read my mind????

I have seen fanfic stories in which Legolas modestly tells people not to call him 'my lord,' for instance, and I understand that they are acting from our notion of egalitarianism, but I think that for Thranduil and his sons, being king and prince is an *obligation,* not an honor. To deny who they are is to duck out of responsibility. And they don't do that. So yes, I think you are right. When Thranduil sends Legolas to Elrond, he is signaling how seriously he takes the loss of Gollum. And one of the things I've been doing in this series (besides amusing myself) is growing Legolas into Legolas of the Fellowship.

If Celuwen and Eilian ever get together, they will both have interesting fathers-in-law, I think!
