Spring Awakenings  by daw the minstrel 17 Review(s)

I think that I do not wish to fall in love. Ever. It does not sound at all like a happy state of being.

Looks like things have come to a head with Celuwen and Eilian. I suspect there will be many more agonizing Discussions before a decision is made. But it also looks as though a decision will have to be made, for the health and sanity of all parties involved.

Sólith seems well and truly concerned for his daughter, but I wonder if he is not being too narrow-minded about his problem. Surely there are married captains in Thranduil's army with some sort of family leave schedule. I have a hunch that if Eilian and Celuwen married, Eilian would have something else to do besides hang with the Southern Patrol and would be able to divide his time fairly well. But Sólith needs to bend a little, else he will end up causing some serious family tension. He wouldn't want his own (future) grandchildren to dislike him for hating their father. He really wouldn't want that.

But in the meantime, yum! Fresh fish for . . . well usually you call it "morning meal," but it seems these folks call it "breakfast." Soda and pop, it seems. Anyway, fresh fish in the morning are one of life's great treats, and it's a good thing I just had dinner, else I'd be getting hungry.

I hope your trip was, if not fun, at least productive.

Author Reply: Hm. Little slip on 'morning meal' there. I'll fix it.

I found being in love to be incredibly wonderful myself. And Eilian and Celuwen will have some sweet moments too, eventually. As you say, for the health and sanity of all, it's necessary.

I doubt if Eilian has plans to hang around the Home Guard but we'll see what they can work out.

In all truth, I don't like fish so you could have my share. :-)

I was amused at how Eilian compares courting Celuwen with drawing up a battle plan. Poor Elf - for someone so experienced with women, some information just seems to go right over his head.

I do hope Sólith can overcome his reservations about the match so Celuwen can be happy. He asks a very valid question though: could Eilian give up his adventuring and stay out of trouble and closer to home?

Looking forward to more!

Author Reply: Eilian does see himself in a battle here of the kind he encounters in the south. He's slipping around trying to lead the opposition into doing what he wants so he can close in the for the kill, so to speak.

Solith *does* have a valid question. I'm not sure I would want my daughter marrying Eilian.

May I rant about Solith again? I want to knock him up alongside the head and ask him why he thinks so little of his daughter. Does he think she has to be dumped by Eilian to move on with life? IF she wanted life without Eilian, she would have it! Dumb Solith!

But Celuwen comes across wonderfully well. She is clearly in love and hurting all at once, and she knows it. I would love to be a fly on the wall as she confronts her father - and he needs confronting! Celuwen is a strong person - she can handle being a warrior's wife!

Ok, side rant on that - I like how Solith looks down on Eilian for the work he does, but he sure expects those warriors to be at his beck and call when he needs them!

But, in the end, no matter how stubborn and wrong and dumb he is, he does love his daughter and for that we will forgive much.

Author Reply: I gather that Solith annoyed you? ::-) [I have my glasses on this morning]

Celuwen and Eilian are an interesting pair to write about because they differ in how they face problems. He is a wily campaigner and she is an outspoken confronter. Solith is about to get an ear full! And you are right that he is wrong.

An all Eilian chapter? That is unusual. Neither of them slept well? I wonder why... Poor Eilian's hip is still bothering him - the sympathy angle is always a good one to play with the ladies. I was glad the young couple got a little time to themselves and that the family got some breakfast. Hunting with Solith? An angry father and weapons are seldom a good combination. Outshooting him is not usually a good idea either. I can't believe the man is so pig-headed about his daughter's happiness. The elf is a prince, a captain and gorgeous! What more does he want? I guess a timid, stay at home husband who will do whatever his father-in-law tells him. That is definitely not Eilian.

Ok, that was not the best way to approach the marriage thing. It was good to plow along with the discussion and find out exactly where he stands. Hooray for Isiwen! At least mom has some sense. I feel kind of sorry for Solith when both his wife and his daughter lay into him. He doesn't have a chance. I admire Eilian for not wanting to portray Solith in a bad light to Celuwen. He did make the right decision - she needed to know what happened and he should not lie to her about it. Like I said, Solith is now doomed.

Sounds like Legolas' job is about to get a lot worse. A swollen river and more rain may cause a bit of flooding. Looking forward to your next update. It was a very long week!

Author Reply: Originally, I thought this chapter would be the second half of the previous one, which was all Legolas, but it got too long. I don't think people have time to read long chapters. And I strongly suspect that what Solith wants is soon going to be less important than what his daughter wants, but we'll see how the young couple manages to work on all the parents involved.

The next chapter is at least going to start with Legolas again. If that part is not too long, there will also be more Eilian, but I can never tell how long this stuff will get.

I missed being part of the fanfic community this week. I had a good conference and saw many friends, but I wished I had an internet connection in my room. I could only check my email by standing in line in the book display area to wait my turn at a station. What a drag!

A tout a l'heure

Author Reply: San Antonio was very nice. My hotel was right next to the Alamo and there was a moving opening there yesterday. I am told the movie was awful but there were fireworks and everything.

Solith may be very nice to other Elves for all I know, but he sure hates Eilian. Celuwen is going to have to make some decisions.

Ai, Eilian has done it now! Solith seems very sure of himself, and he must have known that Eilian would eventually mention the letters. I can't help but think that Isiwen will have a few things to say, however. Still, Eilian is back to square one with Celuwen - he can't give up his work and she can't get over her fears for him. I can't help but think, though, that she's too overcautious. She wants certainty and it's just not there.

Author Reply: I think things are heating up around the settlement. Everyone's temper is growing a bit short. And I suspect that Solith does not have as much control of his women folk as he thinks he does, or as he would like Eilian to think he does anyway. Celuwen certainly sees the problems. We'll have to see how she responds to them.

I hope you had a good trip! And I am amazed that you already have a new chapter up. Wow.

I want to see Celuwen confront Solith. Ah, well, Eilian can't see everything, I guess. I'm glad she knows about the returned letters now. It's also nice to see Eilian concerned about the state of things at home even when he's off dallying with his girlfriend, as the last line shows.

The confrontation with Eilian and Solith was, well, Eilianish. He must love Celuwen very much indeed to be willing to put up with such a father-in-law. And it was funny hearing about Lorellin helping Celuwen put a snake in Eilian's bed. Elven-queens aren't supposed to behave like that! Tsk, tsk.

I like the title of this chapter, too, because it strikes me that Eilian is seeing his courtship of Celuwen in a militaristic way.

Author Reply: Geez, I hope you have a macro made with that explanation! Ms. Whatsit is a good name though. I took my laptop and wrote on the plane both going and coming and since it was two planes each way with a layover in between, I got a fair amount done.

My guess would be that Eilian would enjoy seeing Celuwen confront Solith too. I suspect this is a scene he'll ask Celuwen to describe often. Eilian himself did not last long in his attempts to ingratiate himself to Solith -- like about two minutes. Then he had to tell Solith off. And he is very much into strategy in his courtship. He needs to get Celuwen and her parents all to fall in line with what he wants. And then there's Thranduil!
