Spring Awakenings  by daw the minstrel 27 Review(s)

Ha! Beliond was great! Only Beliond could tell off Thranduil like that and get away with it! Every monarch needs some bossy underling to put him in his rightful place. Is Beliond older than Thranduil? Every time he pulls a scene like that, I imagine that he is ending half his sentences with "you hear me, boy?" Brings a tear to me eye. Just like I act when I am in the middle of a police action at work.

And Celuwen is such a charmer. She's a good match for Eilian, and she definitely knows the score with him, making sure he has that little band of gold posthaste. The marriage of Eilian and Celuwen will be the cause of wacky hijinks for centuries to come. And she's so thoughtful in her dealings with Legolas. I think she knows that she's just ousted him from his place, and she's quite gracious in making up for it. But Legolas is going to have to grow up sometime, I suppose, though I never got the impression that he had quite finished doing so by the War of the Rings.

I think Thranduil has just hit on the perfect punishment for Eilian. Make him wait. Just have him cool his heels for a few days, occasionally favoring him with that "special" smile. Eilian will shred himself to bits, and Thranduil will have to raise no more than the occasional eyebrow. Psychological punishment is so much fun. And it will also give Thranduil some time to deal with his own feelings about his late wife. This can't be easy for him, and I'm sure he knows that he needs a few days to calm down and sort himself out before he can sort anyone else out. Identifying what one is feeling is often the hardest step in dealing with it, and I think Thranduil has made a large personal leap in identifying that he associates Eilian with Lorellin. He now needs to assimilate that, and so a few days of keeping Eilian on tenterhooks will be good for everyone.

Author Reply: I do think Beliond is older than Thranduil, you old sentimentalist you! He was at Dagorlad, which of course Thranduil was too, but I think of him as older. For one thing, he had a son by that time, which Thranduil did not (in my world, anyway).

I have it in mind to write the whole Battle of the Five Armies thing sometime soon, maybe this summer when I have a little more time. Legolas can do some more growing up there, I think. I have a step in mind for him.

You're so cruel to Eilian! Waiting is one the things he finds hardest. Thranduil has some stuff in mind, however, and I think I need to have it ready by the next chapter. This story is going on for many more chapters than I thought it would take to tell it.

Great chapter! It is good that Thranduil had a chance to think things over before speaking to Eilian. Two sides can't often communicate when both are on the defense.

Anyway, I eagerly await more! I am so glad I stumbled upon your writing one morning many, many months ago!

Lily

Author Reply: Thranduil has had millennia to gain wisdom. He can afford to take a little while to think things over. Eilian is an adult, but he 's still young by elven standards. He's undoubtedly finding the waiting a little harder!

I'm glad you stumbled on my stories too, Lily. Although aren't you the one who was reading one in church? I'm probably getting black marks over that!

What a lovely chapter! Again, there was a bit of everything. You just present the characters so well that the reader can easily laugh or sympathize with each and every one. But I must admit that Beliond was my favourite in this character. What a lovable old bear! Even Thranduil stands humbled before him, but it must also be very reassuring for the king to know that his son will always be well looked after, and for a parent, that is always so gratifying. Celuwen is certainly intelligent and Thranduil should really consider making her an advisor in some capacity. And there's Legolas, trying to come to terms that perhaps he may no longer be the most important person in his brother's life and still making an effort to ensure his brother's happiness by befriending the very person who now replaces him in Eilian's life. Though I really doubt that Eilian would love him any less just because he now has a wife. The two brothers will always be close and Legolas may realize that Eilian can be a friend now as well as an older brother who had always looked after him.

Looking forward to the feast!

Author Reply: Thank you, Manderly. I can feel this story starting to meander a little, so it's time to bring it to an end. I have a few more threads to tie up and then there's the party and then Legolas goes back south. That should do it.

I laughed to myself as I was writing the Beliond scene because I knew his fans would like it. And Thranduil cannot handle him at all. He probably knew Thranduil when he was in whatever elves use for diapers and I'll bet that makes a difference. Plus he really doesn't care if Thranduil is mad or not. He's not looking for promotion or anything.

I strongly suspect that Thranduil intends to do just what you suggest. ;-)

After all the discord earlier, it looks as if the family is finally reuniting again. Though I admit that Eilian has always been my favorite, in this chapter I gained a new appreciation of Beliond. After the dreadful start he and Legolas had, it was great to see the relationship the two have developed. Plus he certainly wasn't going to let Thranduil off the hook about sending Legolas somewhere without his bodyguard.
I liked the family dynamics in this one. Thranduil is making some tough decisions about Eilian, though he also is recognizing some hidden truths along the way. The belated wedding party coming up looks like a real pressure cooker situation in the making. I think Celuwen's father may find an ally in Thranduil that he wasn't expecting.

Author Reply: I am trying to picture Solith and Thranduil uniting, and all I can say is, poor Eilian! Beliond is an entertaining character to write about although I'm not sure I'd want to have him trailing around after me all the time.

Thranduil is learning some things about himself and Eilian and I hope those things help them to an easier relationship. Plus he can get Celuwen to help him put a rein on Eilian!

hello.
Legolas and Celuwen seem to get along. That's a good thing. I think it cute that she is going to buy Eilian a ring. Aw. :)
Beliond is such a good guy. I love him so much and he makes me laugh.
Thranduil worries me very much. I'm very glad that you went back and analized that point when Thranduil said those things about his wife.
Ithilden and Alfirin make me feel fuzzy things. They are so adorably cute.
Well, thank you very much for writing. It made my day a whole lot brighter.

Bye bye :)

Author Reply: The ring is part of the ceremony usually. Elves exchange silver rings when they are betrothed and gold ones when they wed. They wear them on the index finger of their right hand. I hope the girls in Esgaroth know what the rings mean!

Thranduil is sad in his loneliness for his wife, I think. But Ithilden and Alfirin are still in love after many years.

Ithilden and Alfirin are cute.... As are Eilian and Celuwen.... I bet Celuwen is a bit daunted at the road ahead of her... But am happy that Eilian is by her side;-)

lol... I loved the part with Beliond and Thranduil... Then with Thranduil and his memories... It was rather sad, but held an amazing amount of truth to it... :-) Sometimes it's more like son like mother than father... But I bet Eilian gets a lot of his Adar's stubborness to go along with his Naneth's foolsish bravery..... :-)

Author Reply: The married couples are doing well with one another. Tolkien says that Elves seldom make a mistake in these matters, but that doesn't necessarily mean they live in cozy domestic harmony all the time time, from what I can tell.

And ouch! Adar's stubborness with Naneth's daring is a terrible combination!

Whee! You and Coriel updated on the same day--and you're both two of the precious few authors who write Legolas well. You two should plan this more often ;).

The beginning of this chapter was so, so...well, "cute" is an un-Elven way of describing things, but you get what I mean. Legolas reading the book Eilian would read to him was so sweet. And I liked his conversation with Celuwen. Celuwen should spend as much time with him as she can, IMO--he's not Eilian's older sibling, so he's definitely not going to feel obliged to advise or judge or lecture. He'll just be nice. I also liked Celuwen saying Thranduil didn't value Eilian enough--do I sense a subplot of a future story in which Celuwen says this to Thranduil's face? And if I were her I would get Eilian a very noticeable ring! Of course, she keeps bringing up silly stuff that Legolas did--poor kid. He took it well. I guess he's used to being teased.

I loved Galivion praising Legolas and Thranduil being a shamelessly proud dad. And Tinar is going to get his comeuppance, hmm? That should be funny. Legolas did indeed handle things well. The part where Thranduil thinks about his sons and the effect their royal status has on their lives is interesting. I bet joining the Fellowship was in someways a relief for Legolas--he was representing Elves, not Mirkwood and so he was just Legolas the Elf and not Thranduil's son.

Ah, Beliond. I cheered when the guard announced him--and grinned when Thranduil groaned at the thought of dealing with him--and got a bit worried for Legolas when he mentioned those thieves, but it all turned out ok. I liked him calling Legolas an "impudent cub." Hee! Beliond's awesome. I bet he goes to Ithilien with Legolas post-Ring War. And I like him saying he liked Celuwen. Those two are rather alike.

Legolas getting snarky about Anyr was funny. I like Snarky!Legolas a lot. And Celuwen is going to have something to do with regard to the settlements, hmm? That should be interesting.

Another great chapter, and I'll be sorry to see this story end!

Author Reply: Unfortunately, Legolas is going back to his patrol on the day after tomorrow (and that's when the story ends). So Celuwen won't have him around for long. Thranduil is proud of Legolas. He's the fair-haired boy right now (no pun intended)! My guess is that the scene with Beliond will be a favorite in this chapter. People like the old grouch for some reason. And you HAVE to be right. Beliond would certainly not let Legolas go to Ithilien without him.
