Of Merry and Pippin  by GamgeeFest 108 Review(s)

“Never trust a Took and a Brandybuck,” Sound advice from good ole practical Sam. Glad he didn't want to lie to anyone. That was so like him. Also was pleased that Merry and Pippin got the last laugh. Very funny stuff!

Author Reply: Sam probably couldn't tell a flat out lie if his life depended on it, though he can refrain from mentioning things. Merry and Pippin may have gotten the last laugh with Frodo, but they will be more careful with Pippin's sisters!

“Of course not,” Merry vowed. Then he smiled mischievously. “That’s what Mother’s for.”

Spoken like an only son. Ever the little charmer, that Merry!

Another wonderful chapter and I do like your Frodo.

Author Reply: Merry's no fool. He knows exactly who to go to when he wants something! I'm glad you're enjoying my characterization of Frodo.

Mushrooms! Just lovely. Pippin and Merry plotting together and that's as it should be. Great chapter!

Author Reply: You've got to have the mushrooms! Merry and Pippin are quite the masterminds, always up to something. Thanks for reviewing!

Oh my! I had hoped you'd show us what Pip's sisters came up with by way of revenge! This was lovely, and I'm glad you had Frodo go along with it, showing that his own sense of mischief had not atrophied just because he'd come of age. Skeptical Merry, convinced in spite of himself; trusting Pip, taken in immediately; conscientious Sam, managing to go along without *quite* really lying; and the sisters--completely ruthless and devious. I loved that Paladin had not forgotten that he had said to leave payback to the girls. Very nice!
And of course, Merry and Pip would definitely pay Frodo back for his "betrayal".

Author Reply: After a month contemplating what his sisters could possibly do, I decided to just sit down this weekend and start writing. I knew it would be a ghost, but had trouble figuring out the specifics. I hoped the details would work themselves out as I wrote, and thankfully they did.

Merry and Pippin will be more careful around the girls after this. I think the lasses accomplished their goal better than even they hoped. Frodo's still has a devious streak of his own. As he rarely gets to exercise it, he saw this as an opportunity to have some fun. Sam couldn't say no to Frodo, even if Frodo said it was alright. And one good turn deserves another: Frodo really should have seen that coming. :)

Very good conclusion. I loved Pippin's insight that Merry didn't really want to share Frodo. Even though Merry himself does not believe this, Pippin was probably right. And Paladin and Sara deciding to let the girls get their own revenge was wicked. Far worse than anything a parent would dream up! This has been a wonderful little story. Thank you for sharing it.

Author Reply: I remember as a kid not wanting to "share" my best friends with other kids. After all, they were *my* best friends. So Pippin is right; Merry thinks of Frodo as his. But Merry will learn to let go.

Yes, that was rather wicked of Pally and Sara, wasn't it? Sweet revenge can often be worse than merely being grounded. It will be interesting to see what the girls decide to do.

I love your description of the aftermath of Bilbo's disappearance. Merry and Sam frantically searching, Sam lending his jacket, and cheering Frodo up with the oliphaut poem. I especially love the way Merry instantly guessed why Frodo had been avoiding him and why, and the way Frodo was only too glad to unburden himself to his cousin. This is really nice, and very well thought out.

Author Reply: Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it, as this chapter gave me quite a lot of problems when I was writing it. First, it grew into a little mini-novella on me, and there was no real place to break it up into smaller parts. Then I had trouble getting the narrative to flow the way I wanted it to in some places. I did a final revision before I posted it here, and it works much better now.

I chose the Oliphaunt poem mostly because of Frodo's reaction to it in TTT. It was the first time he'd laughed in a long time, and it reminded him of younger, happier days. If it could cheer him up in Ithilien, there was no question it would cheer him up now.

Merry knows his cousin well, and Frodo was more than ready to let someone know about his worries after all those months of watching Bilbo planning to leave.

Oh boy! Merry and Pippin up to something at the Party! I love your interaction with them--I could just picture Merry taking Pip on a piggyback ride to get out of the adult's earshot. And a nice little plot twist on seeing the Dwarves. Of course I know there was no mention of them at the party, and they had to be there,as Bilbo left with them, but I had never thought about Bilbo keeping them a secret! Nice bit of deduction!

Author Reply: I'm not sure how secret they were, since people knew they were staying at Bag End, but it is odd that they weren't mentioned as being at the party. I could only assume they were preparing for their trip (and perhaps didn't want 144+ hobbits staring at them and talking about them all night!) It would also make it harder for Bilbo to sneak off, as everyone would undoubtedly notice the dwarves leaving.

This is the biggest party the Shire's ever seen. Merry and Pippin would have been planning mischief for months. It would have been interesting to see what they would have done had it not been for the dwarves.

Lovely! A mushroom raid, how hobbity! And the description of what the cook could have done with the mushrooms made *my* mouth water! Nice little story.

Author Reply: LOL. Well, if anyone can cook mouth-watering mushrooms, it would be hobbits. Glad you enjoyed.
