Sons of Kings  by jenolas 78 Review(s)

Liked the subtle little reference to "Aragorn's eyes" when Arwen wakens her son. And poor Eldarion seems to be at a bad stage. I suppose being in pain and disappointed doesn't bring out the best in any of us, let alone in a child.

Author Reply: Not a pleasant child at the moment, but he has only himself to blame, not that he would admit it, of course!

Oh dear...poor Legolas... Eldarion has much growing up to do I think. I liked how Legolas is so caring and thoughtful towards Arwen. Every girl should have such a friend!!
There will be more chapters, yes? =) I'll be looking forward to those!!

Author Reply: Yes there will be more, and I hope you enjoy them as well.

Legolas is such a thoughtful elf, isn't he? I like the way you showed him taking care of Arwen, especially given her advanced pregnancy. So, Ada is not home, and Eldarion decided to try some jumping...and "Uncle" Legolas is trying so hard to make him feel better. Well, I feel sorry for the pain (and guilt) the boy is suffering, but poor Legolas, having to bear the brunt of it, and I doubt he's had too much experience with little ones before. They are hardly logical and reasonable. *vbg* I've had my own kids snap at me in moments of temper, and it DOES hurt, even though they might mean it for a whole five minutes and then forget all about it. Best not to reason with the child, just leave him alone and by all means, let his father take care of any lessons the bratling needs to learn from all of this! :-) Great beginning, jenolas!

Author Reply: I wish he had been around when I was having my children... such a considerate elf is he.

Yes, he is very inexperienced with children, and never having had such a close relationship with one before he is easily hurt by misspoken words. A lesson he must yet learn, perhaps?

The Legolas / Arwen interaction is just lovely - he is looking after her like a particularly sensitive brother.

Eldarion needs to listen to a lot of what Legolas can say, but he is unlikely to find much of it palatable - too much about responsibility for your actions, keeping your word, not abusing your position and so on.

Legolas is in such a good position to teach him - things Aragorn did not have to learn as he was never the son of a king.

I look forward to more.

(PS: You don't stay on a horse by holding on to the reins - it's all in the legs.)

Author Reply: Regarding the riding... no wonder Eldarion fell from his horse since he was not aware of the correct method of staying on!

Thanks for the info and the review.

Oh, this looks interesting. How clever, to show that this elf and young boy have something so important to their lives in common.

How lovely to think that Legolas deliberately travels by night so that he can experience the starlight. I love that the stable boy is used to this, so we know Legolas does it often, and even stays awake so that he can be there when Legolas arrives!

Legolas’ concern for Arwen is just wonderful to see. He treats her in a very brotherly way and poor Arwen clearly needs someone to look after her in the absence of her husband.

Legolas is so good with Eldarion! I’m glad he pointed out that the horse wasn’t ‘stupid’. I was just about to get annoyed with the child. He seems to get straight to the heart of the matter too: Eldarion broke his promise and disobeyed his father, the fact that he can’t take part in the contest is his own fault and he needs to learn that his position means that he must behave in a certain manner, accepting responsibility for his faults rather than trying to ensure that things happen to suit himself. I thought you wrote Eldarion very well. I really admire people who can write children because I find that so difficult. It’s funny to think that children are essentially the same, be they of Men or Elves and even when that childhood is centuries apart.

I really liked Legolas’ little tale. I get the impression that Thranduil handled his errant child very well, focusing on his behaviour rather than his injury. Clearly Legolas learned his lesson. It seems that Arwen was distracted by her son’s injury but while no-one likes to see their child in pain, I think Aragorn might be more inclined to think along the same lines as Thranduil – at least with a little nudge from Legolas, anyway. Then again, he might not appreciate anyone ‘interfering’ with the way they are raising their child. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see… ;-)

Author Reply: I think that Legolas is well aware of his place in the scheme of things and is not likely to try and take Aragorn's role, although he might offer advice.

I think being a parent is exceptional training for writing young children and their behaviour, which I assure at times has to be seen (or heard)to be believed! I am also of the opinion that no matter the race, young children are basically the same.

Hope you continue to enjoy the story.

Kids! Just written perfectly, capturing the bratty nature of even the most treasured of offspring.
Looking forward to more of this, well done.

Is this the start of something longer? I hope so! I like the idea of the two kings' sons having common problems.

This particular chapter was interesting to read. We see Legolas being affectionate but stern too, which we don't often get to see. I felt for Arwen, who really needed to be in her own bed.

Author Reply: Yes, daw it is to be a longer story. I like to try to examine the less common aspects of characters and their relationships that may have existed in M-e, and this is one that strikes me as interesting.

Even Arwen did not find everyday life a pleasure at times such as this!

Oi! Eldarion is a touch spoiled, isn't he. Legolas was quite the good uncle though. Very nice, so far.

Author Reply: Yes, Eldarion is not entirely adorable in this chapter. Hope you continue to enjoy the story.
