Oh, my. Sinnarn, when will you learn? You are not the first in your family to learn the hard way about disobeying and exploring too far afield. Thank heavens those guards were there, or poor Sinnarn may have been stuck as full of pins as a hedgehog.

I'm glad that Legolas is 'guarding' Eilian on this mission - though who is guarding whom is a moot point. There seems to be chance for lots of brotherly interaction, as well as fun with the minders. I look forward to the visit to Dale!

Author Reply: Poor Sinnarn. He didn't mean to do anything too bad. He was just curious and eager to see the eagles and then meet the men. In a way, you can see Ithilden's influence on him. But not influence enough apparently. The Home Guard warriors must have nearly fainted dead away when the king's grandson jumped into the line of fire.

I hope the trip to Dale is amusing. There's good potential there if I can think of how to use it well.

I think our reviews crossed. :-)

Poor Legolas! I feel bad for him. Beliond would be more like an uncle to him than a friend, I think. Lol, you surprised me when Todith picked Legolas to be Eilian's guard. I thought you would pick Tinár... hahah that would be most unpleasant. Eilian would probably asked Todith to give him someone else. I think even Eilian was suprised to be at Legolas' side on this mission.
Sinnan, Sinnarn... he makes Ithilden be more like Thranduil; that is interesting. I bet the King is laughing about it.

Author Reply: It seemed to me that Todith might see Legolas more as a warrior than his family would, for instance. After all, he's been Legolas's captain for a number of years now and he's seen him do well. And he never sees him in his king's son role. He's just used to him as a warrior. So I thought he might send Legolas as the guard more easily that you would expect.

I think you're probably right that Thranduil is laughing -- although he may not be too amused if relations with the men are disturbed.

A bathing elf to start the chapter, ooh!

All right, back to the review. I am really looking forward to having both Legolas and Eilian in action together, not to mention the fact that Maltanaur and Beliond are standing by to add their spice to things. Even the little glimpse of the bantering that you have given us has been highly entertaining. The idea of Legolas guarding Eilian must be a hard concept to swallow by all, with the exception of Legolas himself of course. It should be very interesting to see how things will end up.

It seems Sinnarn is even more reckless than his uncle(s). The fact that he jumped in front of the Men even surprised me. Even after being lectured by Ithilden, he's not very repentant, is he? I wonder how Thranduil will react, being the doting grandfather that he is. I think this time I am taking the side of Ithilden.

Author Reply: Ah yes. I liked the bathing idea too. Or even elves wandering around in just their leggings.

I'm hoping I can think of ways to convey the interaction between Legolas, Eilian and the keepers. I can see interesting possibilities from several angles: Beliond and Maltanaur together, for instance.

Poor Sinnarn. He didn't mean to cause trouble. He was curious and open and just wanted to talk to the men. Very Bad Things could have happened if the Home Guard hadn't been there. They must have had collective heart attacks when the troop commander's son and king's grandson leapt into danger. I'll bet their bows were in their hands before they could blink.

Alright, I want to know more about Beliond. Like Legolas, I knew he was one of Thranduil’s spies but never thought any more about it and figured his suspicious outlook and taciturn behaviour was a result of Dagorlad and accompanying baggage. Now I want to know more, darnit!

I love it when you give us a glimpse of everyday activities in the patrol. You really make this home away from home for these warriors come alive for me. I’m really enjoying the Beliond/Legolas interaction as well. It seems to me that Legolas automatically assumes that Beliond thinks little of him and so he gets all defensive immediately. Kind of like the way Eilian and Thranduil expect an argument most of the time so they usually end up having one. Beliond strikes me as a very matter-of-fact person. I bet he wasn’t actually being smug at all.

Good old Todith! I had to laugh at both Beliond and Eilian’s reactions. If Legolas is going poor Beliond has to too, whether he likes it or not, and I imagine Eilian isn’t used to having protective feelings towards his own guards. And he probably sees most of his chances for fun going out the window too now that little brother is here!

I see Maltanaur hasn’t forgotten about the dangwath incident! Legolas better believe he’d end up with Maltanaur’s knee in his back even now if he endangered Eilian. Although now Legolas would have Beliond to come to his rescue… Wouldn’t it be fun to see the two keepers up against each other?! Maltanaur seems amused by Legolas and Beliond. I bet his early experiences with Eilian were fairly similar!

I think I was groaning aloud for the entire Sinnarn part of this story. He seems just as intrigued by Men as he is by Dwarves. There’s a bit of Legolas’ curiosity in him, I think. Apart from trying to impress Aniond, he’s naturally open and inquisitive I think and yet it just never goes well for him. But I couldn’t believe that moment when he actually jumped down only to be followed a split second later by three warriors. Those poor Men are having a hell of a time getting through the forest. There has to be an easier way. I love the warriors who are all but rolling their eyes at the three friends. And boy are they good if even Sinnarn and co. weren’t aware of their presence. I’m not even going to bother asking what on earth Sinnarn thought was going to happen. I figure thinking things through isn’t a strong point for someone his age.

What luck to meet Ithilden! LOL, poor Sinnarn. Nilas is certainly thorough in his job. “You are always saying how interesting Men are, Adar.” I’m still laughing at that tactic! All of Ithilden’s carefully worded reassurances to Thranduil have come back to bite him – but that is really not the best card for Sinnarn to play! I don’t blame Ithilden one bit for being so angry. Apart from the fact that his son could have been killed, he could have done further damage to the apparently delicate relations between the Men and Elves. And now Thranduil has to be told? Ouch. I’m torn between not wanting him to be angry with Sinnarn and not wanting Ithilden to be upset by his father being lenient with his son. I felt so bad for Sinnarn, though, lying there listening to his parents. It’s one thing arguing with them but quite another to overhear their disappointment.

Legolas seems to be enjoying his trip so far! I have this terrible feeling that it might not be the pleasurable time he and Eilian expect. In fairness, though, Eilian does know how serious it is to do his job. I notice he even refers to Thranduil as “the king” even when just with Legolas, Maltanaur and Beliond.

I love how comfortable Eilian and Malatanur are with each other. It’s probably good for the other two to witness. Maybe the reason Beliond hasn’t told Legolas much is because he hasn’t asked. Isn’t it a bit strange for Legolas to wonder about Beliond being able to move amongst Men when he’s been to Esgaroth with him before? But I must say, Beliond is being a lot more peculiar about Dale than he was about Esgaroth. I’m really intrigued by him. O.k., I’m just nosy. Is there a story to be told??!

Wonderful chapter and thanks for the quick update. Keep it up! :-)

Author Reply: When I first thought about this story, I realized I had only a vague idea of Beliond's back story. I think I know a little more of it now. I'll have to see how much he's willing to share. :-)

I'm glad you enjoy the daily-life-in-the-patrol details. I was trying to make the place seem a little real before Eilian showed up. That kind of scene takes me forever to think up. I sat in a Panera Bread restaurant on Friday thinking ok, Eilian shows up. What's Legolas doing when Eilian gets there? What time of day is it? What's everybody else doing? And of course, bathing elves are always good. :-)

I really like Maltanaur. He's confident and strong and committed to protecting Eilian. And by now, he has a fair amount of respect for his charge, who in turn treats him with a great deal of affection. No wonder Legolas is jealous. I think Maltanaur is willing to indulge Legolas because he knows that Eilian is so fond of him, but if he thought that Legolas was endangering Eilian, as you say, he wouldn't hesitate for a minute in choosing who to take care of.

Poor Sinnarn. He never means to get into trouble and he so consistently does. He's just curious and relatively open minded. In some ways, you can see Ithilden's influence. But boy did he make a mistake. The warriors in the trees must have groaned when they saw him make his move. The king's grandson, for pity sake!

It seemed to me that Eilian would say "the king" when he was talking about his father's official role. If he were just with Legolas, he would probably say "adar," but not with the keepers there too. Eilian wants to have a good time, but he does know this is a potentially serious matter.

Beliond wasn't happy about going to Esgaroth either. But I do think you're right and that Legolas hasn't asked Beliond much about himself. He is still learning to see Beliond as a person in his own right, something that can be hard for the young when they look at those much older.

Glad you liked it, Dot.

I like the age of Legolas in this story - he is big enough to consider Sinnarn still an elfling but he is still growing himself. I don't think he realizes the irony. The bath in the creek made me shiver in more ways than one. The water must have been cold. Greeting a Captain and representative of the king with only your breeches on is probably not considered proper etiquette. I guess we will let him slide this time. It was obvious he was anxious to hear Eilian's assignment but handled the meal with patience. Any time you get a chance to torture Tinar it should be relished. I was wondering if Maltanaur was concerned over the experience level of their escort. It seems his and Legolas' first encounter was less than pleasant. He is right when he says there is no one who would be more protective. Tavor sounds like he is going to add some excitement to the trip.

Sinnarn's adventure was enough to turn my hair gray. Jumping down and startling the men was less than wise. Having the warriors surprize him in turn was great! I could almost see his jaw drop. Were his breeches still clean? I think Nilas was having a little too much fun escorting the younglings home. Ithilden's temper seems to rival that of his father. That was a very good scolding the poor boy got. Your Sinnarn POV is an excellent, rebellious teen.

Eilian seems very well suited for this mission. It is good to see Maltanaur so supportive of him and I can understand Legolas' jealousy. It is hard to be patient, even for an elf. I am looking forward to the trip into Dale.

Author Reply: LOL. Bathing elves are always a good thing. Cleanliness is next to godliness, after all! That's what you meant, isn't it?

I was trying to picture the life in the border patrol camp, and it seemed to me that they must get used to seeing one another in various states of undress. Before I got to Eilian's arrival, I wanted to try to make the camp come alive a little. But then, Eilian has lived among warriors for a long time too, and he's going to have to go some before he thinks like a representative of the king. I have trouble picturing it.

Sinnarn is so well intentioned. He's just curious and eager and can't imagine anyone wishing him harm. The warriors must have known the three kids were there all along, but if Sinnarn hadn't jumped down, they'd have gone on their way probably. Ithilden is being pushed to the breaking point here, I think.

I'm looking forward to the trip to Dale too. Any of the four elves on the trip (plus Legolas's horse) could have interesting interaction with the other ones. I hope I can be patient enough to show it all. :-)

Like Legolas, I am interested in learning more about Beliond. He is probably your biggest mystery OOC character. I've enjoyed stories with Beliond in them for a long time, and it'd be really interesting to learn more about what makes him tick. Not all elves like men, but Beliond seems to have a big dislike of them. I hope you do delve further into his character into this story.

When Legolas was given the chance to travel with Eilian, at first I was really excited to see that you were putting the two together. I have a feeling, though, that something bad is going to happen, and one of the two are going to be put into some type of danger. I really can't wait to see where this goes.

I don't think you've ever really written much about Sinnarn's childhood or atleast his teenage years, but I'm happy to be seeing it now. Though Ithilden and Thranduil are both very strict, Ithilden is definitly a different father. He doesn't have the experience that Thranduil has (not to mention the prejedices he kind of tries to make his children believe).

Anyway, great chapter. Can't wait for the next.

Author Reply: As I was writing this chapter, I was thinking about how little I've shown of Beliond's backstory. I wrote a little more of it for this story. I think Dagorlad made him withdrawn and unhappy and his experiences as a spy would not have shown him the best side of anyone.

I'm hoping things get exciting in Dale and that everyone survives it with their feelings for one another clarified a little.

This is indeed the first time I've written about Sinnarn as an adolescent. He was a really cute little kid and not a bad young adult, but he's trying his parents' patience right now. They must have been terrified by what happened and totally frustrated by his behavior!

Sinnarn just doesn't have any luck with the other races, does he? Poor kid, I can't help but laugh at him. He just so wants to meet Men and Dwarves and those meetings just don't meet his expectations. Ithilden's reaction was probably fairly calm. I surely would not want to be brought home by the Home Guard. Ack!

Ooo, I'm excited about Eilian, Legolas and their keepers in Dale. The dynamics of that whole situation has so much potential. Sorry this has to be short, but I am on my way out of the house. I saw the new chap up and had to read it real fast. So much fun! I just love these stories.

Author Reply: I hadn't thought of it but you're right! Sinnarn's intentions are so good and things always go so wrong. Poor kid. He never intended to cause the kind of furor he did.

Eilian, Legolas and the keepers do generate an interesting four-way dynamic. I'm hoping I can keep it all in sight. We'll see how things go in Dale.
