Once in a Fair Green Country  by Space Weavil 17 Review(s)

I love the idea of Olorin being to peek inside the elven world without them knowing. We know Tolkien said he did it but to see what he was actually thinking is intriguing. The whole concept of birth and death must have been so hard for a maia to grasp; I can see how it would perplex him. I like the scene where he stands 'thinking' and years have past without him even being aware of it. Of course time would mean nothing to them! A lot of thought has been put into it, and kept it so canon, and I love to see that type of story. I'm looking forward to the next chapter.

What a unique and wonderful look behind the 'curtain' in Valinor. I like the way you've depicted the Valar and the Maia. You've given them wisdom and innocence. And distinct personalities. I also really like your introduction into the story of Olorin's life in Valinor with Elrond and Gandalf. I'm looking forward to reading more of this tale. Very interesting and well done.

This story is so wonderfully fresh and unique. I am so enjoying this look into Gandalf's private life. Your depiction of his natural state makes me smile - it's really intriguing to imagine him flitting among the flowers, raising barely a breeze! Varda's appearance was quite powerful, and Gandalf's confusion at his feelings is so sweet. You've woven so many of Tolkien's themes into this story, and I'm anxious to see where it goes next. Thanks for posting here!

Wow, I love Gandalf and Elrond in the same story. And it's a brave author who delves into the mind of Gandalf! What a fascinating exploration of what makes him so unique and special. I love his insatiable curiosity about the Quendi, and the glimpses of his life in Valinor are delightful.

I am absolutely certain I've never read a Gandalf romance before, so this is interesting. And it does seem plausible. After all there was Thingol and Miriel.

Feanor must have been an interesting phenomenon to the elves and maia. A child! Born not made! How odd!

I have to say I like poor Gandalf's utter inability to define what draws him to Irimien and Varda's immediate understanding of it. That was very sweet. And I like the way you are weaving canon facts (Finwe's interest in Indis; Feanor's courting) into the story as well as the Valar and Maiar's warnings to Gandalf that he has duties too. I like the way you are characterizing 'young' Gandalf here. Very much like he was with the Hobbits in M-E. Great job.

Well I have to say I was really skeptical of the "Love for Gandalf" challenge at OSA but you have made a wonderful start with this. I love the beginning with poor Elrond feeling Celebrian's presence/absence so strongly. You really portrayed that well. I like how you used that to set up Gandalf's memories. I like your Elrond.

And Gandalf surrounded by the wine glasses was pretty funny. :)

But the part I liked best was the conversation between Gandalf and Nienna (great choice, by the way. Such an interesting character). Loved this: "All life requires sacrifice," replied Nienna. "All creation requires some measure of hardship. For one song to be heard, others must fall silent, lest there be discord. Every craftsman must, in some small way, be diminished as he fashions his creations. So it is with life. And the scenes with Finwe and Feanor were very well done. Certainly a good choice of characters to illustrate what Gandalf is trying to understand.

I definitely like your beginning. Off to the next chapter. :)
